Pronunciation of Helena and Lucia? and what do you think of Hazel?

[name]Hi[/name] Berries,

We thought we had decided on [name]Susannah[/name] [name]Caroline[/name], but a few other options have appeared that we love but are not sure if they will have pronunciation issues.

What do you think of

[name]Helena[/name]
[name]Lucia[/name]
or [name]Hazel[/name]?

And how would you pronounce [name]Helena[/name] and [name]Lucia[/name]?

Middle name for any of these options will be [name]Joanne[/name] & we have a 3 syllable surname starting with M.

Thanks Berries!

I pn [name]Helena[/name] as [name]Helen[/name]-a, [name]Lucia[/name] as Loo-chee-ah or Loo-cee-ah. C like ts in lets.

The Greek pronunciation of [name]Helena[/name] (which is a Greek name) is hel-en-ah. It’s the only proper way to say it in Greek as both E’s in the name are made with epsilons.

[name]Lucia[/name] can be loo-see-ah or loo-shuh. I really love it said loo-shuh

[name]Helena[/name] ‘hel-en-ah’ and [name]Lucia[/name] ‘loo-chee-a’.

I say [name]Helena[/name] as [HEH-len-a] or [name]Helen[/name] with an A, and [name]Lucia[/name] as [loo-SEE-a], though I totally get the [loo-CHEE-a] pronunciation, too.

[name]Love[/name] [name]Susannah[/name] [name]Caroline[/name], because [name]Susannah[/name] offers up cute nicknames like [name]Sosie[/name] and [name]Sunny[/name]. I like [name]Helena[/name] for [name]Lena[/name] [[name]LEE[/name]-na], and am iffy on [name]Lucia[/name]. [name]Lucille[/name] seems more you? [name]Hazel[/name] is fun and simple. I like [name]Helena[/name] [name]Joanne[/name], but I love [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Joanna[/name] if you’re willing to add that extra A.

Thanks for the ideas [name]Lemon[/name] - I should have actually said if we went with [name]Hazel[/name], it would be [name]Joanna[/name]/[name]Johanna[/name] - I love names which end with ‘a’ but don’t want a fn & mn which both end in a, so [name]Hazel[/name] would be the only option that would let us go with [name]Joanna[/name] over [name]Joanne[/name]. [name]Joanne[/name]/a honours two family members (also honoured by [name]Susannah[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]) hence using one of those options.

I do wonder if simple is better with our surname - ie. [name]Hazel[/name].

My one reticence with [name]Susannah[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] is that it means she would have a 3-3-3 syllable name, and they are all pretty long, - our surname is 9 letters. It sounds ok in my head, but is that too much do you reckon? Our intention would be to use a nn day to day with [name]Susannah[/name].

I really like all options, but funnily enough I feel the bigger mouthful is the shorter [name]Helena[/name] [name]Joanne[/name]. Something about the repetitive Ns.

I prefer [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Joanna[/name] best of all, particularly with a very long surname. It’s certainly got a vintage feel, multiple sweet nicknames, and will be easy for your daughter to write, spell, fill in forms with, etc.

(sorry if duplicate message has appeared, it disappeared)

Hmm, blade, thanks - we hadn’t thought of the repeating Ns actually, that has made me think. We have an N in our surname as well. That may be a bit much, it is making my head a bit sore as I say it now I think about it! Thanks, we need to think about that one!

Thanks for the suggestion of Lucielle, it came up as an earlier option with DH but he has negative connotations with the name, and came up with the idea of [name]Lucia[/name] instead. [name]Lucy[/name] as another alternative is beautiful, but not really my style, it is too cutesy for me.

I go back and forth between [name]Helen[/name]-a and He [name]LAY[/name] na for [name]Helena[/name]. [name]Lucia[/name] is loo SEE a for me although Loosha or Loocha also makes sense. [name]Love[/name] them both. [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Susannah[/name] also very lovely. You have a lot of great options!

I like two pronunciations for [name]Helena[/name]. He-[name]LAY[/name]-na and He-len-a. Not Hel-ee-na.

I like [name]Lucia[/name] pronounced Loo-See-ah but not [name]Lu[/name]-chee-ah.

[name]Hazel[/name] is one of those names that’s pretty but not fussy. It brings to mind a practical, intelligent girl.

My daughters name is [name]Helena[/name], we pronounce it Heh-lay-nah. We call her [name]Lena[/name] (lay-nah)
[name]Hazel[/name] is my name, I used to hate it but I like it now.
[name]Lucia[/name] was on our list, we were pronouncing it Loo-see-ya but decided against it.

[name]Helena[/name]: I’m not a huge fan of this name. It’s pretty enough but I don’t think it fits a little girl or a teenager. I pronounce it Hel-lay-nuh.

[name]Lucia[/name]: I like [name]Lucia[/name] (I pronounce it [name]Lu[/name]-cee-uh), but I prefer [name]Lucy[/name]. I think [name]Lucy[/name] is sweet, short and classic, but not boring. You won’t have and prn issues with [name]Lucy[/name], either.

[name]Hazel[/name]: I really like [name]Hazel[/name] a lot- if I had to choose between [name]Helena[/name], [name]Lucia[/name] or [name]Hazel[/name], I’d choose [name]Hazel[/name]. I think it’s really sweet and vintage, but it fits every age, unlike [name]Helena[/name].

[name]Lucy[/name] [name]Joanne[/name] or [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Joanne[/name] would be my picks.

[name]Helena[/name] is pronounced he-[name]LEN[/name]-a and he-[name]LAY[/name]-na about fifty-fifty.

[name]Lucia[/name] is my name, and I get pronunciation questioning all the time. I say it loo-CHEE-a, the Italian way, but have also gotten loo-SEE-a, LOO-sha, and LOO-see-a (the latter of which is not a legitimate pronunciation).

I adore [name]Hazel[/name]! c:

[name]Helena[/name] is [name]Helen[/name]-a for me (like [name]Helena[/name] Bonham [name]Carter[/name]) or He-lay-na . I love both pronunciations!

As for [name]Lucia[/name], I pronounce it [name]Lou[/name]-see-a, but [name]Lou[/name]-sha also works. There’s also the [name]Lou[/name]-chee-a pronunciation but I’d never use it because I’m not Italian.

I really love the name [name]Hazel[/name]! I find it funny that there was was all of this fuss when [name]Julia[/name] [name]Roberts[/name] named her daughter [name]Hazel[/name], and now it’s becoming more popular! [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Joanna[/name] is beautiful, but I prefer [name]Susannah[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]. As a [name]Susan[/name] I’m biased, but [name]Susannah[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] is just lovely!

A 3-3-3 syllable name does seem like a bit much, but I think [name]Caroline[/name] keeps it from being too much name. If the middle name also had a similar ending, like [name]Susannah[/name] [name]Helena[/name] it’d be too much. But I think [name]Caroline[/name] would be fine.

Well, I don’t know what your surname is, but [name]Hazel[/name] is simple with style, so I love it with a three-syllable last name. [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Johanna[/name] or [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Joanna[/name] are both lovely. Can’t pick! Maybe [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Johanna[/name]. I’ve got a soft spot for [name]Johanna[/name].

A 3-3-3 combination is generally tough, but [name]Susannah[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] is lovely. However, you whomever you’re honoring with [name]Caroline[/name] would also be honored with [name]Charlotte[/name], as they’re basically the same name. So, maybe you could use [name]Susannah[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] or [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Johanna[/name]?

I adore [name]Helena[/name] and I say it either helen-uh or hel-ee-nah.
I don’t love [name]Lucia[/name], but I definitely don’t hate it. Being fluent in Italian I pronounce it either loo-chee-uh or loo-shuh.
[name]Hazel[/name] is absolutely gorgeous and my favourite out of the three.

I have always pronounce [name]Lucia[/name] as Loo-sha and [name]Helena[/name] as Hel-AY-nah. I love [name]Helena[/name].

I pronounce [name]Helena[/name] as [name]Helen[/name] with an “a” on the end. I pronounce [name]Lucia[/name] as “lu-see-ah.”

[name]Helen[/name] = hel-en-ah

[name]Lucia[/name] = loo-sha

NB: I love [name]Hazel[/name]
