I know an [name_f]Honora[/name_f] and she pronounces it Uh-nora. When I see it written down, I tend to read it out as “On-nora” (which is only subtly different).
This is a family name for me…we all say it like @halloween_jacqueline suggested: “on-nora”. That’s as close as I can describe it. Uh-nora is pretty too!
I agree with pp; I say it like “ah-nora” (“ah” like in father)
I pronounce it oh-[name_f]NOR[/name_f]-uh. It’s a pretty name – have you seen the similar [name_f]Annora[/name_f]?
It’s somewhere between uh-norah and oh-[name_f]NOR[/name_f]-ah, as @chrisco says. Sometimes it’s on-[name_f]NOR[/name_f]-ah, too. Emphasis always on the second syllable, though!
Well, my grandmother’s name is [name_f]Honora[/name_f] and, myself, my family, and anyone who has ever known her pronounce it as “HUH-nora”. I’ve never heard of [name_f]Honora[/name_f] being pronounced as ‘[name_f]ANN[/name_f]-nora’ and ‘UH-nora’. I thought those pronunciations were related only to [name_f]Annora[/name_f] - a similar but ultimately different name.
on-[name_f]NOR[/name_f]-a (I picked uh-nora which seemed to correspond to this)
Thanks for the thoughts and the alternate pronunciations! I have trouble figuring out how to explain what I mean when I write phonetically. The main thing I wanted to make sure is that people don’t default to pronouncing it like the word “[name_f]Honor[/name_f]” with an a at the end. We have family reasons for wanting to spell it [name_f]Honora[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Annora[/name_f], but it does seem like pronunciation of [name_f]Annora[/name_f] is more straight forward. This is for a middle name, so hopefully it won’t be too much of a big deal!
