Saw this name in the nameberry article from the front page and I kind of like it! So how do you pronounce it? Is it EYE-ker or EE-ker?
Would there be pronunciation issues in the U.S.?
What middles would you put with the fn [name]Iker[/name]?

I’m in the States, and I pronounce it EE-keer. But I suspect most people here would pronounce it with a an EYE sound, so that’s a consideration.
Maybe a name like [name]Joseph[/name] or [name]Matthew[/name] for a middle?
I would assume it is Eye-ker from looking at it. I like that pn best. I am intrigued by the name myself.
I pronounce the name EE-ker, but I live in Germany and we usually pronounce the names the way they are originally pronounced. We’d never pronounce sth german if we knew it wasn’t a german name. I think that is different in the States, so it might be a problem.
I’ve heard it EE-kier and EE-ker, definitely not Eye-ker. I think pronunciation would be a big issue here. I’d go with a fairly familiar middle name to ground a name like [name]Iker[/name].
[name]Iker[/name] [name]William[/name]
[name]Iker[/name] [name]Daniel[/name]
[name]Iker[/name] [name]Simon[/name]
[name]Iker[/name] [name]James[/name]
Or, if you have the heritage for it, go with something Spanish to give it real flair.
[name]Iker[/name] [name]Lucio[/name]
[name]Iker[/name] [name]Lisandro[/name]
[name]Iker[/name] [name]Mateo[/name]
It’s ee-care or ee-ker
[name]Iker[/name] came to the top 1000 in 2010 because of [name]Iker[/name] Casillas, the goalie for Real Madrid and the Spanish National team. It’s a Basque name so most Americans would be unfamiliar with it. But soccer is growing in popularity in the US, and with the Latino population, [name]Iker[/name] won’t be too out there
I think that because it is hispanic, it is pronounced ee-care.
I thought it was eye-ker when I first saw it and I am from the U.S.
I think people will assume eye-ker but I do believe it is ee-ker. I’d still with something pretty normal for a middle name; [name]Iker[/name] [name]Joseph[/name], [name]Iker[/name] [name]William[/name], [name]Iker[/name] [name]Daniel[/name], [name]Iker[/name] [name]Sebastian[/name], [name]Iker[/name] [name]Dominic[/name], [name]Iker[/name] [name]Theodore[/name]?
It’s definitely ee-kehr, and there are major pronunciation problems in the states, unfortunately. I’ve read a few articles about the name since the SSA list came out and people keep talking about the long I sound in it… and there is no long I sound in [name]Iker[/name]. The English-speaking football announcers get it wrong 98% of the time, which is why people think it’s EYE-kurr.
I’d stick with something Basque myself.
[name]Iker[/name] Joanes is really sticking out to me. I think that’s awesome.
EE-kehr, with a semi-rolled r. I was shocked to see it jump so much- I know two 3rd graders named [name]Iker[/name], but no babies.
I’m sure there will be pronunciation problems in the states, but [name]Iker[/name] is my top choice! As an American living in the US happily married to a Spaniard named [name]Gerardo[/name], [name]Iker[/name] seems much easier to pronounce that [name]Gerardo[/name]. And [name]Gerardo[/name]‘s name hasn’t prevented him from achieving success despite the lack of Americans’ abilities to pronounce it.
I pronounce it EE-kair though the first time I saw it I assumed it was pronounced EYE-ker.
It’s nice. It reminds me of [name]Icarus[/name] in a way.
EE-care is the correct pronunciation.
