Pronunciation of Kaiser?

[name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce it?

I am inclined to pronounce it as [name_u]Kay[/name_u]-zhure although I have heard it pronounced as [name_m]Ky[/name_m]-zer as well. Is there a correct pronunciation or do either work?

The pronunciation is [name_m]Ky[/name_m]-Zure I believe.

I’ve only ever heard of it pronounced [name_m]Ky[/name_m]-zer.

^this. I’ve only ever heard ky-zer

Me too…

(I have to type more to post)

Usually names are pretty flexible with pronunciations but I think [name_m]Ky[/name_m]-zer is the only way to pronounce this name.

Yep, “[name_m]KY[/name_m]-zer” here too.

Thanks everyone! I see that [name_m]Ky[/name_m]-zer is most common! I still like [name_u]Kay[/name_u]-zure though although I am liking [name_m]Ky[/name_m]-zer more.

Not sure if you’re aware, but one of the moms on MTV’s Teen Mom (her name is [name_f]Jenelle[/name_f], and she’s not very popular) named her 2nd son, [name_m]Kaiser[/name_m] (pronounced [name_m]Ky[/name_m]-zer)

[name_m]Just[/name_m] want to make you aware of any potential associations. Personally, that is the only place I’ve heard of the name [name_m]Kaiser[/name_m]!

[name_m]Kaiser[/name_m] is the [name_m]German[/name_m] word for “emperor.” It is pronounced [name_m]KY[/name_m]-zer, as many of you pointed out. It’s a fairly common last name in Germany.

[name_m]Kaiser[/name_m] is the [name_m]German[/name_m] spelling for [name_m]Caesar[/name_m]. Researchers believe the original pronounciation of the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] emperor’s name was closer to [name_m]Ky[/name_m]-zer, although some people pronounce [name_m]Caesar[/name_m] more like [name_f]Cay[/name_f]-zar (soft C as in [name_f]Celeste[/name_f].)

Wanted to add that piece of info in case you end up preferring the [name_u]Kay[/name_u]-zer pronounciation.

I would pronounce it [name_m]Ky[/name_m]-ser.

Yeah, it’s pronounced ky-zer, there isn’t technically any other way of pronouncing it without butchering it.

I’ve only ever heard it [name_m]KY[/name_m]-zer.

I said [name_m]Ky[/name_m]-zure, but I’m pretty sure that in my accent, that is the same as [name_m]Ky[/name_m]-zer. I agree with everyone else about the singular pronunciation.

As a native [name_m]German[/name_m] speaker, it’s [name_m]Ky[/name_m]-zer.

I would say [name_u]Kai[/name_u]-Zer
