Pronunciation of Maya

My-uh, I’m from the US.

My-uh is the only way I’ve ever heard it. I’m from the U.S.

I live in the US, but I agree with the above. It’s how I was taught with Maya Angelou or the Mayans.

Agreeing with all the other Americans on this one- in the US, [name_f]Maya[/name_f], [name_f]Maia[/name_f], and [name_f]Mya[/name_f] will all always be MY-uh.

[name_f]Miah[/name_f] would be pronounced the same as [name_f]Mia[/name_f]- MEE-uh.

I really can’t think of a spelling that would make people consistently pronounce the name as [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-uh here… even Mayah would just be assumed to be [name_f]Maya[/name_f] with a silent h on the end…

My-ah. I’m from the Netherlands, but living in the US right now - that’s how I’ve heard it pronounced here (South), too.

From Australia, [name_f]Maya[/name_f] is pronounced may-uh (I know several) and [name_f]Maia[/name_f] pronounced my-ah.

I think less people use the my-ah prn is Aus because we have a major department store called [name_m]Myer[/name_m] and the association would be too strong.

I know several people named [name_f]Maya[/name_f], all pronounced MY-ah. I live in the Midwestern US. I also know one [name_f]Miya[/name_f], pronounced MY-ah, and one [name_f]Miah[/name_f], pronounced ME-ah. I really like the [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-ah pronunciation, but I’ve never heard it anywhere.

Most definitely My-uh. [name_f]Maya[/name_f], [name_f]Maia[/name_f], and [name_f]Mya[/name_f]/[name_f]Myah[/name_f] are all pronounced My-uh where I’m from (mid-Atlantic/[name_f]East[/name_f] coast USA). [name_f]Miah[/name_f] would be pronounced like [name_f]Mia[/name_f].

I’ve never heard the pronunciation [name_f]Maya[/name_f], and don’t like it… reminds me of mayonnaise. I guess if you wanted that pronunciation in the USA, you could try Mayya? JMO.

My-uh (Southeastern US)

I’m from the UK so I think I can use either pronunciation and it’d catch on, although I was oblivious to may-uh being so close to mayo, lol. I love the my-uh pronunciation so I’m going to go with that. Thanks everyone.
