[name_f]May[/name_f]-ah or my-ah? If you can, please state the country you’re from so I can see if it’s a pronunciation that differs depending on location. I love how [name_f]Maya[/name_f] looks and don’t mind either pronunciation, it’s just picking one of the two that won’t be something she would have to correct time and time again.
I’m in [name_f]England[/name_f], and know a [name_f]Maya[/name_f] and a [name_f]Maia[/name_f]. [name_f]Maya[/name_f] says ‘‘may-uh’’, [name_f]Maia[/name_f] is definitely MY-uh though so if you want that pn I’d go with that.
My instinct is [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-uh, it actually took me a while to even understand how people could be saying it another way lol.
I’ve heard My-uh every time - same prn as [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Angelou[/name_f], [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_m]Rudolph[/name_m] or the [name_f]Maya[/name_f] people of Mesoamerica. But when my cousin had a baby [name_f]Maya[/name_f] my father asked whether it was My-uh or [name_f]May[/name_f]-uh. Upstate NY reporting
This is exactly my opinion. I’ve only heard [name_f]Maya[/name_f] as may-ah and it took me ages to understand why it was said my-ah in US/CA, although [name_f]Maia[/name_f] is my-ah to me too. I do like the my-ah pronunciation more but worry nobody will use this prn.
I live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and I say [name_f]Maya[/name_f], [name_f]Maia[/name_f] and [name_f]Mya[/name_f] as MY-uh. I don’t think I’ve ever met a [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-uh.
[name_f]Maya[/name_f] is one hundred percent [name_f]May[/name_f]-uh. Obviously since it has [name_f]May[/name_f] in front of it [name_f]Maia[/name_f] is the same.
If you want the My-uh pronunciation, use [name_f]Miah[/name_f].
Thank you all, I’m so glad to see 90% of Brits pronounce it may-ah (how I originally pronounced it), although I really don’t mind either pronunciation. I think I may add it to my list with both pronunciations and if I ever do use it, just see which one catches on better. Lol.
