Pronunciation of Mia

I’ve noticed that [name_f]Mia[/name_f] is in the top 10 for popularity but I’ve actually never met one. I’m assuming this name is pronounced “Me-ah” but I’m curious if that’s correct. Would you pronounce [name_f]Mia[/name_f] as “Me-ah” or “My-ah”?

Definitely Me-yah / Me-ah.

If you wanted the pronunciation My-ah then it would be [name_f]Maia[/name_f], [name_f]Mya[/name_f] or [name_f]Maya[/name_f].

Some people do say [name_f]Mia[/name_f] as My-ah though. If people were to look at the name they would automatically think Me-yah or Me-ah. Saves the confusion.

I’ve only ever seen [name_f]Mia[/name_f] as Mee-ah (lovely name). As pp said, if you want My-ah I think the best spellings are [name_f]Maia[/name_f] or [name_f]Maya[/name_f].

I’ve seen [name_f]Mya[/name_f] pronounced the 2 different ways so that spelling could be confusing.

I’ve also come across [name_f]Maya[/name_f] pronounced as [name_f]May[/name_f]-ah, so it’s all a bit complicated these days!

I always pronounce it as Mee-ah, but I’m aware some people say it My-ah, though [name_m]Ive[/name_m] only ever heard of it once, on one of the [name_f]Queen[/name_f]'s great-grandchildren.

100% mee-ah. I have never in my life heard it said my-ah.

I have actually seen it pronounced as My-ah, however I think that must have been a rare case.
Generally ive seen it mainly pronounced mee-ah

Oh good! I recently named my daughter [name_f]Maia[/name_f] and I’d always assumed that [name_f]Mia[/name_f] was Me-ah. I was suddenly worried I’d given my daughter a way more popular name than I’d realized.

I say MEE-a and that’s what I’ve heard most frequently. There have been a handful of cases that I’ve seen where [name_f]Mia[/name_f] was/is pronounced as MIE-a but that seems to be very uncommon.

I’ve only heard it pronounced MEE-a (as in [name_f]Mia[/name_f] Farrow, or Mamma [name_f]Mia[/name_f]).

For me MY-a would be spelled [name_f]Maya[/name_f]/[name_f]Maia[/name_f]/[name_f]Mya[/name_f].

If I see [name_f]Mia[/name_f], I immediately think it is pronounced MEE-a. To me, MY-a would be spelled like [name_f]Maya[/name_f] or [name_f]Maia[/name_f].
