[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone! My SO and I were thinking about the name [name_u]Micah[/name_u] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] for our son to honor my father in law ([name_u]Michael[/name_u]), while still giving him his own name.
We’ve both always assumed [name_u]Micah[/name_u] was pronounced Mee-ka, but someone told us the right pronunciation was My-ka. We looked in a handful of naming books and some of them say Mee-ka and some of them say my-ka. As we don’t really know which are credible, we thought turning to the internet was probably the best thing to do. But because a lot of the sites aren’t too credible either, we decided asking real people with (hopefully) some experience on this matter could settle it for us
Summarized: [name_m]How[/name_m] is [name_u]Micah[/name_u] pronounced according to you?
I would say I have heard my-kah a little more often but I have heard mee-kah. Both pronunciations are correct, a lot of names have more than one pronunciation especially Biblical names such as [name_u]Micah[/name_u] and [name_f]Naomi[/name_f].
I guess I’m the odd one out since I would say Mee-ka, if I just read it off a list. I’ve never heard it pronounced My-ka in real life and I work at an elementary school ([name_f]East[/name_f] Coast USA). [name_u]Micah[/name_u] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] is fantastic either way! Best of luck!
I’ve heard both, so I wouldn’t be surprised to meet a [name_u]Micah[/name_u] that pronounces it as Me-ka. The [name_u]Micah[/name_u] from Paranormal Activity also pronounces it Me-ka, fwiw.
I would say Mee-kah. My-Kuh doesn’t feel right, but I haven’t a clue how it’s supposed to be said. It just reminded me of [name_u]Mika[/name_u] (the singer) and I assumed it was the same pronunciation.
[name_u]Micah[/name_u] is My-cuh, for the pronunciation you’re going for I would use [name_u]Mika[/name_u]. If you like the [name_u]Micah[/name_u] spelling though, I think you could still use it with the Mee-ka pronunciation.
I have never heard it pronounced mee-cuh, so seeing people say it’s a common thing is really fascinating to me! If you really want the mee-cuh pronunciation, I would spell it [name_u]Mika[/name_u], because [name_u]Micah[/name_u] to me is all my-cuh, like the book in the Bible.
My-kah is the only way I’ve ever heard of pronouncing it. I don’t think Mee-cah is necessarily wrong, but I would think he would get the my-kah pronunciation a lot.
I’ve known several Micahs and all have pronounced it My-kuh. I’d never considered that there was an alternate pronunciation, in fact!
I know one boy named [name_u]Mika[/name_u] and his name is pronounced Mee-kuh.
If I were you, I’d either use [name_u]Micah[/name_u] as My-kuh or [name_u]Mika[/name_u] as Mee-kuh, but would steer clear of [name_u]Micah[/name_u] as Mee-kuh because that seems confusing to me.
I like both names, but I think I lean more towards [name_u]Micah[/name_u]–especially if you’re looking to honor a [name_u]Michael[/name_u]. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] that helps
I have always thought of it as Mee-ka. To be honest, I would use the pronounciation that you’re most comfortable with, it won’t be hard to correct people if they make a mistake.
