I always thought the pronunciation of [name_f]Selene[/name_f] was fairly straightforward. But I am just realizing that there may be other commonly used pronunciations. Anyways, in particular for those of you in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u], how do you pronounce it?
As an English speaker, I pronounce it with two syllables. However, I believe three syllables is the most authentically Greek (suh-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-nee).
In [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u] at least, it would be pronounced just like [name_f]Celine[/name_f] (seh-LEEN) just like you thought. It’s a Greek name, so there may be conflicting pronunciations with the Greek alphabet possibly.
[name_u]Mischa[/name_u] - the seh-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-nee pronunciation is what worried me. I was just hoping most people don’t actually use that pronunciation.
Though seh-lee-nee is an authentic Greek pronunciation, Seh-leen is the MUCH more commonly used pronunciation worldwide. It’s one of the names that the Anglican pronunciation has taken over the authentic Greek pronunciation (like [name_f]Circe[/name_f], [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], etc).
Might just be because of [name_m]French[/name_m]-speaking relatives, but my first instinct with that spelling is always to say “seh-LEHN.” On the other hand, [name_f]Celine[/name_f] would be seh-LEEN and [name_f]Selena[/name_f] would be seh-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-nah (although I have known one who pronounced it seh-LEH-nah.)
seh-lee-nee is how I would say it. Because [name_f]Celine[/name_f] is pronounced seh-LEEN. So I would assume that [name_f]Selene[/name_f] must have a different pronunciation. I know that the proper Greek pronunciation is seh-lee-nee, and I actually know a young Latina girl named seh-leh-nay, spelled [name_f]Selene[/name_f]. I’d probably try one of those first.
To me, [name_f]Celine[/name_f] is seh-leen and [name_f]Selene[/name_f] is seh-lee-nee, but I have a bit of an obsession with Greek girls’ name that end with “e”, so it seems like such a waste not to pronounce it when spelled [name_f]Selene[/name_f]. I wouldn’t find it weird to meet a [name_f]Selene[/name_f] pronounced seh-leen, though, just a little disappointed!
