I know many people in English speaking countries pronounce [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] [name_f]Willa[/name_f]-meena. But how is the name pronounced in [name_m]German[/name_m]?
I would pronounce it just as it is spelled: [name_m]Wil[/name_m]-hel-mina I didn’t realize it had a different English pronunciation!
[name_f]Wilhelmine[/name_f] is the [name_m]German[/name_m] variant. IT’s vil-hel-MEE-nə.
Thanks! I was assuming it’d be vil-hel-mee-na, but I hadn’t realized the [name_m]German[/name_m] variant had a different spelling. And gipro, I was watching some British TV show (I don’t recall what it was) and there was a woman on it who pronounced it [name_f]Willa[/name_f]-mee-na, and then my mom (American) said she had a coworker who pronounced it the same way. But I’m actually not sure which pronunciation is more common in the U.S. or [name_f]England[/name_f].
W equals V in Germanic and Nordic languages, if that was the question?
Out of curiosity, how did the Dutch [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] pronounce her name?
I knew the W would be pronounced as a V, I was just unsure about the second syllable. Thanks guys! And I’m not sure how [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] pronounced her name, but I would assume it’s Vil-hel-mee-na.
[name_f]Vilhelmina[/name_f] is one of my absolute favourite names ever:)
In Dutch the W is much closer to the English W in sound than the [name_m]German[/name_m] W (more of a V sound)
[name_m]Wil[/name_m]-hel-MEE-nah
Vil-hell-Mee-nah
it is Vil-helm-in-a.
