Pronunciation quesiton

Would love to know how you all pronounce [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]. The name is growing on me but I pronouce it like [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f]. However I am NOT keen on that spelling at all; I think it looks really trendy. I’m not fond of the [name_m]Ad[/name_m]-ah-line pronounciaiton either because it makes me think of “adding a line” or something. [name_m]Ad[/name_m]-ah-leen is better but I’m not sold. Are there any alternative spellings for this name besides the trendy ones that end in -lyn?

[name_f]Lovely[/name_f] name! Yes, Adelein and Adeleine are two.

I pronounce [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] with a “line” ending (like the barbershop standard song “Sweet [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]”). [name_m]French[/name_m] speakers say “leen”. I don’t know why anyone would pronounce it with a “lyn” (there is [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Carolyn[/name_f])

I say the “[name_f]Line[/name_f]” version as well.

Another for [name_m]Ad[/name_m]-ah-line. But my BFF has an [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] and says [name_f]Emma[/name_f]-lynn. If that is what you like, then go for it. I think if you are worried, the only way you won’t have to correct people all the time is to go with [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f].

I’ve been saying it ad-ah-leen in my head.

I would pronounce it as [name_m]Ad[/name_m]-ah-leen, but personally I prefer the name [name_f]Adelina[/name_f].

If you really want the pronunciation [name_m]Ad[/name_m]-ah-lyn, then I think [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f] is the only way to spell it, unless you’re OK with correcting people all the time. Another option would be [name_f]Adelin[/name_f], but it just looks incomplete to me.

I say ah-duh-line, like [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] without the ‘M’.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] this name! I’d pronounce it Aid-a-leen.

I say add-uh-line. I second the spelling Adeleine!

I can’t help it: When I see -line at the end of a name I automatically pronounce it [name_f]LINE[/name_f].

When a vowel is followed by a consonent and then another vowel, the first vowel is pronounced long: Think Fir vs [name_m]Fire[/name_m], Mirth vs Mire, Far vs Fare. Obviously there are tons of exceptions to this rule but it’s usual to keep in mind that people who are unfamiliar with the name may default to this.

To me it would be [name_f]Adelin[/name_f] vs [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]. Unfortunately the [name_f]Adelin[/name_f] makes me think of Ritalin.

I say [name_m]Add[/name_m]-uh-leen. Pretty name!

[name_m]Ad[/name_m]-uh-LEEN

[name_m]Ad[/name_m]-a-line is how I say it.
If you want the “lyn” pronounciation, spell it [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f] or correct people forever. It would be like naming you daughter [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] but insisting she be called [name_f]Carolyn[/name_f]; spelled wrong.
