Does anybody know the pronunctiation to go with in the US of the name [name_f]Selene[/name_f]?
I always thougth the e on the end was silent and [name_f]Selene[/name_f] was pronounced like [name_f]Selena[/name_f] without an A (like [name_f]Celine[/name_f]).
But according to pronouncenames.com, there are many ways to say it. But what pronunciation would work best in the US and will cause the least problems with pronouncing it?
I live in the US and would pronounce [name_f]Selene[/name_f] just like [name_f]Selena[/name_f] without an -a at the end, so like [name_f]Celine[/name_f].
I would say like the element Selenium without ending. I am not sure because I am not very good at pronouncing the names/words I have not heard spoken. You can search the net for correct pronounciation, I think it should be the Greek one, like the goddess.
I’m sure most Americans would pronounce [name_f]Selene[/name_f] like [name_f]Celine[/name_f] (which is my preferred spelling, even though I know the association with [name_f]Celine[/name_f] [name_m]Dion[/name_m] is so strong).
Pretty sure the Greek pronunciation is more like Se-lee-nee though.
I would say [name_f]Selene[/name_f] as suh-leen, like the first two syllables of [name_f]Selena[/name_f] (as in Gomez). I’d actually say [name_f]Celine[/name_f] (or Céline) as say-leen, but I took [name_m]French[/name_m] at school for years.
I say Sel-leen, but I am also in Australia. I feel that this prn would cause the least trouble, as it is what most people naturally say. Se-lee-nee is lovely though.
I would defer to [name_f]Selena[/name_f] without the last “ah” sound and I think that would be the most common pronunciation. I do know someone by this name who goes by Suh-lee-nee (she’s Brazilian, so maybe that’s the way it’s pronounced there?), but it usually confuses people at first.
