Is the first syllable pronounced like the word “car” or like the beginning of the word “carrot”?
Basically, is it CAR-iss or CARE-iss?

Yep. I must have posted this about a thousand times now but: http://www.forvo.com/word/carys/ There’s no ‘care’ involved at all just a short ‘KAH’ sound followed by ‘riss’.
I went to college with a [name]Carys[/name] that went by Care-is but really just called herself [name]Georgie[/name].
I think it’s one of those American vs. British things. Whenever I come across it in [name]America[/name], it’s CARE-iss, but in [name]Britain[/name] it seems to be CAR-iss (just like [name]Clara[/name] is CLAH-rah, [name]Cara[/name] is CAR-ah, [name]Arabella[/name] is ar-ah-[name]BELL[/name]-ah, etc. as opposed to the American [name]CLAIR[/name]-ah, CARE-ah, and air-a-[name]BELL[/name]-ah). I think [name]Britain[/name] is more true to most language’s pronunciation of the “ar” syllable, but to most Americans, the [name]AIR[/name] sound just seems more right. For what it’s worth, I knew a little girl years ago named [name]Karis[/name], pronounced KARE-iss.
I have never met anyone w/ this name but I love it and I have always pronounced it Car-iss like the word Car. Def not the Care sound. But that’s b/c I thought it was Welsh and that’s how they pronounced. I am pretty sure either is acceptable. I do prefer the Car sound.
Yeah there is a dialect pronunciation change for [name]Carys[/name] BUT the OP was asking for the proper (meaning the original) pronunciation of the name which happens to be the way we say it as demonstrated by Forvo

Again, no. Lol. That’s just like [name]Carys[/name] but with a ‘KEH’ sound. ‘KEH-riss.’
I’m American and I pronounce [name]Carys[/name] with a short a as in cat - not care-is. I’m from [name]New[/name] [name]York[/name]. I also don’t pronounce [name]Ariel[/name] like air-ee-el, or [name]Carrie[/name] like care-ee. And I don’t pronounce [name]Erin[/name] and [name]Aaron[/name] the same way. It’s the merry-[name]Mary[/name]-marry thing. In some US regions, they sound the same. To me, they are completely distinct.
What so different?
I’ve had people debate me on the pronunciation of my own name, [name]Tara[/name]. “It’s [name]TAH[/name]-rah, not TAR-ah”. It’s basically the same sound so it’s not a big deal. Plus writing it out doesn’t always capture exactly how a person is pronouncing the name. I pronounce “care-is” and “keh-riss” the same way.

It’s KAH-riss in [name]England[/name], but Americans/Canadians pronounces the “a” differently than we do, so I assume CARE-iss would be the right one (normal one?) over the pond. (This is something we should all keep in mind when talking about pronunciation ;))

This. I’m from the [name]Philadelphia[/name] area, and I can’t really portray how I pronounce it, because it’s not CAR or CARE… kind of if you say “car” with a weird half right [name]Boston[/name] accent. Maybe short a as in cat would be the best way to describe it.
