Pros and Cons to Magnolia

My husband recently told me he really likes the name [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]. So much that he said he likes it more then our #1 name [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. I’m really loving [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] now too!

I would like some more opinions and perspective on the name. Any obvious problems with the name? Nickname options? Any and all comments would be much appreciated! Thank you!

[name_f]Maggie[/name_f] and [name_f]Lia[/name_f] ([name_f]Leah[/name_f]) would be cute nicknames! I don’t think that [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is bad, but I like [name_f]Willa[/name_f] better. As far as flower names go, I prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is certainly unique, though!

I love [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]!! [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t see any cons with it. A pro is that it’s got so, so many nicknames (unlike [name_f]Willa[/name_f]): [name_f]Mag[/name_f], [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Nola[/name_f], [name_f]Nolia[/name_f], [name_f]Lia[/name_f], and [name_u]Noli[/name_u]

I like [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]! To me it comes across as very southern (US), which might be a pro or a con depending on how you feel about it. I really like [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] for a nn.

No negatives from me as it’s one of my favorites!

Thank you all for all your insight! I loved all of your nickname suggestion. Unfortunately [name_f]Lia[/name_f] won’t work because my name is [name_f]Leah[/name_f]

My Dad made a comment today that he thought a child wouldn’t like to be named [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]. Like she would think its old and stuffy and might resent it. :frowning:
What do you all think? I think the naming culture is so open now with lots of old lady chic names it won’t matter.

I definitely don’t think that [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] would resent her name. It’s much more likely that someone named something an older person would consider “normal,” like [name_f]Karin[/name_f], [name_f]Dawn[/name_f], or [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f], would resent their name because it wouldn’t fit in with their peers. With the floral [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] in the top 100, as well as the longer and fanciful, [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], I think [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] fits in perfectly. The name is still unique, but I think it’s in the same genre as those top 100 names. Plus, [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is beautiful!

I love [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] & think a child (or adult) would really love it too. It will fit in great with vintage names and nature & flower names that have both become popular. There are so many nn options which makes it even more versatile and perfect for a child as well as adult. [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] and [name_f]Nola[/name_f] are both great! I think it’s a beautiful name.

[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is a beautiful name, with a sweet, feminine feel to it. It reminds me of the flowers which are lovely, and does feel Southern to me but that’s not a bad thing [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. It’s never been super common so doesn’t feel tied to any one generation/age group to me, not old lady at all. [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] would probably be the go-to nickname, followed by [name_f]Nola[/name_f], but as PPs have said there are lots of options- my favourite is [name_u]Noli[/name_u], and of course she could go by her full name! I much prefer [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] to [name_f]Willa[/name_f], it feels livelier.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] @lnxn09,

[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is all pros and no cons from my perspective. [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] and [name_f]Nola[/name_f] would be the most intuitive nicknames to me.

I can’t really see any negatives. Nicknames could be [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Nola[/name_f], [name_f]Noli[/name_f], [name_f]Molly[/name_f], [name_f]Nellie[/name_f]…

[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is a lovely name with no negatives that I can see, especially where her some of her peers are also likely to have vintage flowery names!

I love the name. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t worry about your dad: Our parents often have different ideas about names, but her name will suit her perfectly once she’s here. I love the nickname [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. My husband is anti-flower name for some reason. Hates all flower names! But that’s obviously not an issue for you, so I say go for it! So good to both agree on a name

I find it a bit clunky. If you call that a negative. I love [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] though

I have a little [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]! We call her [name_f]Nola[/name_f] most of the time. It was a name I suggested to my husband and he latched on to it and so we had it picked out long before she came along. I went back and forth a bit too, worried that it was a little out there but ultimately I’m glad I went with it.

My [name_f]Nola[/name_f] is just 1 so I have no idea how she likes her name yet.

The pros for me are that it is a gorgeous name that you don’t hear much (at least around here). It is a legitimate name to me because it was in use in previous generations. I liked the nickname options and the connection to nature. It seems on trend to me without being very popular. Now I’m just hoping it doesn’t soar in popularity and make it seem trendy.

The cons are that it is a big name and not common so sometimes I feel like people don’t like it. I get it, it isn’t everyone’s style! No one has been direct or rude about not liking it. I did have one person ask (very politely) why we didn’t just name her [name_f]Nola[/name_f]. I worried a little about having a nickname so different from the name…sometimes people ask me what we do about monogrammed stuff (M or N). A minor con was worrying about it sounding too Southern. We do live in the South and like that aspect of it but certainly don’t want to sound really country! And the biggest con that I’m facing right now is what in the world would we name another little girl?? We’re thinking we’ll have at least one more child and if it is a girl I can’t come up with something that goes with it!

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps! Good luck to you!

[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is one of my favorite names! I love [name_f]Willa[/name_f] too. The nicknames [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] and [name_u]Noli[/name_u] are what I would use. I wouldn’t worry about your dad, my parents generation don’t like names that “sound old” either. We’ve used [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Maxine[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Mae[/name_f] in our daughters names and family told us how old the names were and our kids would hate them. But they fit in with their peers, and so far our kids seem happy with them.
