Prudence

I have a love-hate relationship with the name, [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]. I love the nickname [name_f]Pru[/name_f]/[name_f]Prue[/name_f] but I have trouble liking the name as a whole. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about the name [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]/[name_f]Prue[/name_f] and can you think of any other full names where [name_f]Prue[/name_f] could be used as a nickname?

No to [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]! It has inescapable sexual connotations that make being a teenager with the name really painful.

That said, I agree with you that [name_f]Pru[/name_f] is such a cute, lively, and smart-sounding nickname. There must be another way to get to it…but if [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] is the only way, no.

I put [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] in the same box as [name_f]Chastity[/name_f], it’s just more appealing in terms of sound. But in meaning? Too much hardcore teasing potential, way beyond mere rhyming and into the name itself. Sadly.

I don’t care for [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] at all. [name_f]Pru[/name_f] is cute, but it just sounds like “prude” to me. The only name I can think of is [name_f]Prunella[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_u]Rue[/name_u] at all.

I don’t like [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] at all. The only name I can think of with the potential for nickname [name_f]Pru[/name_f] is [name_f]Prunella[/name_f]. What do you think of [name_u]Rue[/name_u]?

[name_f]Prunella[/name_f]? Oh my god!!! Not much better than [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]!

I’m going to go against the crowd and say I like [name_f]Prudence[/name_f], I think it’s kind of sweet. That being said you might also consider [name_u]Spruce[/name_u], [name_m]Pruitt[/name_m]/[name_m]Prewitt[/name_m], [name_f]Prunelle[/name_f], [name_f]Prudentia[/name_f], [name_m]Cyprus[/name_m], [name_f]Primula[/name_f], & [name_f]Prune[/name_f]

I actually really like the name [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] and nn [name_f]Pru[/name_f] and [name_f]Prudie[/name_f]. BUT I absolutely would not give any child a name with the word “prude” in it.

Yeah, I agree with everyone who likes it-- maybe I should clarify my earlier comment-- I really like it too. BUT I think it would be a truly hard name for anyone but an extraordinarily attractive woman to wear. (And even a woman like that would come in for teasing). Basically it would just be hard, especially in this era of teens sending each other selfies all the time, the teasing and potential innuendo… Sadly, no.

Sad because it really is an adorable name, independent of all that!

I love [name_f]Prudence[/name_f], but the whole high school teasing thing would make me never name my child that. Which is very unfortunate!

I suppose you could use it for [name_f]Priya[/name_f] too? [name_f]Prunelle[/name_f] too, but I’m not a fan.

I love [name_f]Prue[/name_f] as a nickname, but [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] is too stodgy [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. Sadly, I can’t really think of another way to get to [name_f]Prue[/name_f].

We named my daughter [name_m]Pruitt[/name_m] after a friend with that as a surname. I loved the nn [name_f]Pru[/name_f] and so we went for it.

We always get a great reaction from her name! It’s never, “Oh!…That’s nice.” It’s always, “Oh my gosh! That’s such a pretty name!”

I really like [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]. I know two; one goes by [name_f]Prue[/name_f] and the other by [name_f]Prudy[/name_f]. They are both very funny, sweet and popular girls. Neither of them have ever been teased. I think it’s a gorgeous name!

All I see is prude. It’s pretty in theory, I think the character played by [name_u]Shannen[/name_u] [name_m]Doherty[/name_m] on Charmed wore the name well, but I don’t think it’s quite feasible in real life.

I really like [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]. A lot of people say she will get teased because of the “prude” part, but honestly everyone’s name is tease-able. We had a [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m] at my junior high, and they turned his name into a sexual joke. Teenagers can make anything dirty. It really varies on the child, not just the name [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

I secretly love it because of Charmed, but I don’t think it’s completely usable nowadays. I know kids will tease for basically anything, but [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] is a name that I consider very tease-worthy because it’s very stodgy nature and ‘Prude’.

What about something like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_u]Rue[/name_u] nicknamed [name_f]Pru[/name_f]/[name_f]Prue[/name_f]?

I don’t love [name_f]Prudence[/name_f], but I don’t hate it or find it unusable either. It is a bit dusty but almost vintage-chic, “so out it’s in.” [name_f]My[/name_f] first association is the Beatles song Dear [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]. I’m not a huge Beatles fan either, I only know a handful of their songs. It’s not really a bad association though.

[name_f]Prue[/name_f] is a cute nn, but the Prude, part of [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] is just too much, although I quite like [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] mum also suggested [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] as a full name for Purdey (which has some great associations for me), so I’ve been thinking about it recently as well. I really can’t think of a nice full name for [name_f]Prue[/name_f]. Maybe you could use a name beginning with P or Pr and use [name_f]Prue[/name_f] as a nn; like [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] nn [name_f]Prue[/name_f]?
