[name_m]Hi[/name_m], berries!!! I have one more question for you about a favorite of mine. The name is [name_f]Psyche[/name_f]. I have always adore it, I love the myth and the meaning is just lovely. I would use it in a heartbeat but i’am worried about people’s reaction.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that if I named my daughter [name_f]Psyche[/name_f] they will automatically associated with Psycho??
[name_m]How[/name_m] would you react if you meet a girl named [name_f]Psyche[/name_f]?
I’d DEFINITELY relate this to Psycho! Maybe it’s because I’m a teenager, but I would definitely feel sorry for a little girl named [name_f]Psyche[/name_f], due to the open target her parents bestowed upon her for bullies to take shots at. To me, [name_f]Psyche[/name_f] would be as bad as [name_f]Regina[/name_f] (pronounced the Canadian way, so it’s basically vagina with an R). It may have worked 100 years ago or so, but I don’t think any child could pull it off now! Perhaps a name with the same/a similar meaning would be best.
My initial reaction the first time I heard it (at college) was “oh dear”, like [name_f]Alannah[/name_f] said above. But if you love the myth, I reckon people will get used to it, especially as a middle.
I think [name_f]Psyche[/name_f] would be better in the middle spot due to the teasing potential. The name is too similar to a lot of words regarding one’s mental health (psycho, psychotic, psychopath etc…). I think it would make a quirky mn.
To me it makes me think of what you say when you trick someone. You know, like when you hold out your hand for someone to high five and then you pull it away. . . “[name_f]Psyche[/name_f]!” I know the name isn’t pronounced the same, but that’s my first association.
@ esswei that’s my first thought too. I actually kind of like the name [name_f]Psyche[/name_f] (john [name_m]William[/name_m] Waterhouse has beautiful paintings about that myth). However I think it would work better has a middle name.
For real???!!! Can you imagine going through life with this name? I met a baby boy with this name once and everyone was appalled. Almost in tears that a child would have to wear that name for life. Yes it is Psyco of [name_f]Psyche[/name_f].
You know, this is a guilty-pleasure of mine that I’ve loved for quite a while : ) It has such an alluring sound and if you’ve ever seen W. A. Bouguereau’s paintings you would love it even more. I wouldn’t mind teasing potential either, but only because I plan to homeschool and siblings and friends take weird names for granted : ) The only reason I can’t use it is because it’s the polar-opposite of a saints name : ( Que sera sera.
#1 - To non-name lovers or Greek mythology experts, yes.
#2 - I would be ecstatic! To the fullest degree : )
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that if I named my daughter [name_f]Psyche[/name_f] they will automatically associated with Psycho?? In the US, yes. I can only speak from my own experience, but most people don’t have a background in greek mythology. Classics are not required here.
[name_m]How[/name_m] would you react if you meet a girl named [name_f]Psyche[/name_f]? First I’d ask who it was spelled because [name_f]Psyche[/name_f] and Sykee (or something similarly kree8tiv) are NOT the same. Then I’d be curious about the story behind the name (such a boldly unusual name that practically invites ridicule makes me question what would motivate risking a childhood of teasing)
It’s a gorgeous name or just weird?? [name_m]Both[/name_m], but I lean more toward weird. That said, definitely lovely for a middle.
I don’t associate it with psycho, but I do associate it with mental health and illness. Mental illness doesn’t mean psycho, but using a name such as [name_f]Psyche[/name_f] might become troublesome. I think psyche is a beautiful name, a beautiful word and to me it’s about strength and weirdly fragility at the same time.
If I met a little [name_f]Psyche[/name_f] I think I’d think it was quite cool, but also strange. I think it’s better suited as a middle.
I’m sorry but I have never heard of this as a name. [name_m]How[/name_m] is it pronounced b/c to me I am pronouncing it like the word [name_f]Psyche[/name_f]…like as in related to psychology, mental health, etc. I cannot fathom someone naming a child this…I mean kids would 100% tease and call psycho, psychotic etc…it’s just too out there.
I agree with [name_u]Mischa[/name_u].
Like you I’ve always loved the myth and the character but I think it would be an incredibly difficult name to wear and most people won’t connect it to the myth but to Psycho, Psychology, and Psychiatry, etc. If I think my SO would let me get away with it I’d suggest it as a mn for future kiddo’s but he already thought I was weird when I was reading the myth to him.
[name_f]Psyche[/name_f] is way too out there to be used as a name [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. It makes me think of psychiatry & delving into a person’s psyche rather than the Greek myth.
I have an unpopular opinion on this website, I feel partly it’s because I am actually trying to name a child. I feel very strongly that names that are easily teased are a very bad idea. [name_f]Psyche[/name_f] is going to be teased, there is simply no question about it. I also get tired of people claiming that any name can/will be teased and that’s just ow kids are. I would no more name my child [name_f]Psyche[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], or [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] than I would paint a red x on their foreheads to make them in to targets. Our personal sentiments about beautiful names need to have some boundaries. These are beautiful names that are best left for middles, I am sorry to say. Also keep in mind that a lot of people on this forum giving the green light on names like this are people who don’t have kids and are not even close to having kids. There is some great input here for finding a name but at the end of the day if my child came home crying because I named them something like [name_f]Psyche[/name_f] it will be my own fault. I embrace odd and unique names and named my son something extremely unusual, but I made sure it was not an obvious reference to something negative.
