Those of you that do like double-barrel names, do you think it should be the double-barrelled name alone or a middle name as well?
Example: [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f] LastName or just [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f] LastName
I prefer double-barreled name alone!
I don’t mind double barrelled names. I would use a middle but that might be because I like to have two (or more) middles. I’d prefer a middle with a different number syllables to the second name of the double barrelled name (if that makes sense). E.g. [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f].
I agree with myosotis, if I were to use a double barrell name I would use a middle name with more syllables. For me it would be at least 2 syllables more than the last part of the double-barrell, so it would be [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] Lastname not [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] Lastname.
I don’t like double barrelled first names at all, they are so common in the UK. I wouldn’t mind if they combining unique names but it’s always the same names, e.g. for girls it’s [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]-[name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]-[name_f]Mae[/name_f], while for boy’s it’s [name_u]Tyler[/name_u]-[name_u]Jay[/name_u], [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] etc.
I think you can call your child [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] without putting a hyphen in there, so maybe [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] could still be called [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]!
Well, I don’t like hyphens so for them I prefer that there be a mn so that people won’t assume the 2nd name is the mn. With a hyphen I don’t think a mn is as necessary. You know for a fact that the two names are supposed to be said together
I know people who’ve used/have double barrel firsts with no middle, and those that have got a middle, so I don’t think it matters either way. If you were to go down the middle route, I’d use something longer that isn’t a common ‘second part’ - [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], for example, rather than [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], as it sounds too disjointed otherwise, like two middles rather than a double first and a middle.
I’m not the greatest fan of them, because as a previous poster said, they’re super common in the UK and usually come from the same pool of names - a popular first part and [name_f]May[/name_f]/[name_f]Rose[/name_f]/[name_f]Grace[/name_f]/[name_f]Anne[/name_f]/[name_u]James[/name_u]/[name_u]Jay[/name_u]/other one syllable name as the second. But there are some that are rather pretty and a bit different - I’m fond of the [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]-[name_f]Sophie[/name_f], for example.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] one thing to bear in mind is that a lot of people tend to drop the second half of the name - so [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f] will become [name_f]Ella[/name_f]. It’s not just out of laziness or convenience, I know someone that dropped half their name because they didn’t like being the only person to go by two - though I suspect it’s a more popular trend now than it was 20 years ago anyway.
I love double-barreled names and have them on my list. I plan on using a middle so that it’s clear that the second part of the name isn’t the middle.
I agree completely with some previous posters Personally, I love a lot of hyphen names ([name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f]'s probably my biggest one), but I would have to use a longer middle.
ie;
[name_f]Lily[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f] [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
and so on
