Does anyone have any concerns over how similar this name sounds to [name_f]Alice[/name_f]? I absolutely love it but this is the one thing that gives me pause. I wouldn’t want my son to be taunted over this. Interested in hearing your opinions.
I really like [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]. It is a beautiful combo of gentle and strong. I wouldn’t even think “[name_f]Alice[/name_f]” if I heard someone calling their son this. It is similar to all the feminine “[name_f]El[/name_f]” names that are popular for girls but this one is all boy to me.
I wouldn’t have connected [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] to [name_f]Alice[/name_f] at all if it wasn’t pointed out. I associate [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] as a surname, in which the person I know with this name is quiet tall, humble and just a good guy all around.
It’s a good name! [name_m]Just[/name_m] don’t use [name_f]Alice[/name_f] as a possible sister name, and you’ll be fine!
Thank you @whatchamacallit! I agree, I also don’t see it on a girl.
@river_dweller, I tend to overthink everything D:
Thank you!
An fyi, when I first saw the movie “The Age of [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]” there’s a main character named [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] that I misheard as [name_f]Alice[/name_f] for a few minutes until my mom spelled it out for me.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] thought you should know… I also love the name!! It was likely just my ears being dumb!
I did meet someone who introduced their toddler as “[name_u]Ellis[/name_u] not A-L-I-C-E” she had had lots of people question it
I think it’s just because [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is so well known
I’ve heard a couple of boys being called [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] recently and I wouldn’t have connected it to [name_f]Alice[/name_f].
Any name can be mocked for sounding similar to see different name. I wouldn’t worry about [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] being called [name_f]Alice[/name_f] at all.
Thank you, I appreciate all of your thoughts!
I went to school with a boy named [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]. No one ever once thought of him as [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. Definitely fine on a boy.
I worked at a children’s store (build a bear) and over the phone we did have a mix up between an [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] and an [name_f]Alice[/name_f], but it was quickly corrected when the birthday started. It was very simple and easy fix. Over the phone we also had issues with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] as well so it wasn’t the end of the word. In person though, I wouldn’t be concerned about it.
I think the different spelling really distinguishes it from [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if it does sound a little similar, I don’t think it would be an issue. There are lot’s of unisex names and boys names that sound similar to a girl’s name (or are even pronounced the same but spelled differently, like [name_m]Aaron[/name_m] and [name_f]Erin[/name_f] or [name_u]Francis[/name_u] and [name_f]Frances[/name_f]). I don’t think it’s likely to lead to teasing, not like naming your son [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] might. If your son was named [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] and got teased because it’s similar to [name_f]Alice[/name_f], I’d say it’s likely that the kid that did the teasing was just a bully and that [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] would have gotten teased about something else if his name was [name_m]Brandon[/name_m], for instance.
I think it’s really nice.
It’s a bit feminine, but it’s the right kind of feminine.
Good name on boys:)
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]. If my husband didn’t dislike it I’d probably want to use it for a boy. I’ve never made the connection between [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f]… I wouldn’t worry about it!
