I love the name [name]Phoebe[/name] the most at the moment for my daughter but I’m wondering/worrying that she’ll end up spending her life having to spell it out to people and will run the risk of people spelling it Feebee, [name]Pheobe[/name] or whatever. To me it’s really obvious how it’s spelt and pronounced but I’m not sure about the rest of society.
I don’t want my daughter to have a name that she always has to spell out to people but I don’t want to settle for a really boring and common name just so people know what it is.
What are your thoughts on the name [name]Phoebe[/name]? Is there anyone called [name]Phoebe[/name] on nameberry who can let me know if they have always had to spell their name out to people?
[name]Phoebe[/name] would be more likely to be misspelled if it were Feebee or [name]Pheobe[/name], [name]IMO[/name]! [name]Phoebe[/name] is the generally accepted spelling, and it is a well-known name.
Spelling out your name is something we’ve all had to do at least once. Funny - I used to think it was exclusive to a girl called something like Emyleigh or Mikaylah but then it happened to me. I was recently asked by a classmate if my name had a double letter. Which would be understandable if I were a [name]Jenifer[/name]/[name]Jennifer[/name], [name]Isabella[/name]/[name]Isabela[/name] and so on, but not when I’m [name]Amber[/name]. What was he thinking - [name]Ammber[/name]?
Basically - ANYONE’s name can be misspelled at any minute, even if it’s as blindingly obvious as [name]Amber[/name]. [name]Phoebe[/name] is an incredibly pretty name, and I encourage you to use it.
[name]Phoebe[/name] is well-recognised in most places, I think. So you wouldn’t run into many problems. I’m in the UK and know lots of girls named [name]Phoebe[/name], and they rarely run into problems. I do know a [name]Phoebe[/name] who was briefly teased by her friends who called her ‘[name]Po[/name]-eeb’ as a joke, but she didn’t mind much.
Anyway, I think [name]Phoebe[/name] is lovely, and I would definitely use it.
I think most people will know how to spell this name. Obviously, there is bound to be some exceptions. I’ve had people ask how to spell two of my daughters’ names - [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Jane[/name]. There are alternate spellings so I could see why I was asked … but I don’t think it can get much easier than this!
I agree that [name]Phoebe[/name] is well-known enough not to have many problems. I know an 11-year-old [name]Phoebe[/name], and I think the most difficult thing about her name has been teaching her and her younger siblings, as they came along, to spell it as they were learning to write. [name]Phebe[/name] is another option, but I think you would have more spelling problems with [name]Phebe[/name] than [name]Phoebe[/name]! It’s a pretty name. I think you should go ahead and use it. Best wishes!
[name]Phoebe[/name] is lovely! I’ve seen a few people accidentally spell it as [name]Pheobe[/name] sometimes online, but I think most people know how to say and spell it.
[name]Phoebe[/name] is one of my current favourites.
I asked DH if he likes it (which he does) and his comment was “Guess I will have to learn how to spell it” LOL
I think alot of people will know it, some won’t.
But these days even [name]Ann[/name] can be [name]Anne[/name], [name]Kate[/name] can be [name]Cait[/name]…
I like the [name]Phoebe[/name] spelling as that is the “personalised keyring/teddybear” at the shops spelling.
You could go for more common, but that still doesn’t mean people will spell it right.
[name]Love[/name] all the nn’s for [name]Phoebe[/name] too! Phe, [name]Fee[/name], [name]Fifi[/name], [name]Bee[/name], [name]Bea[/name]…
The only concern I have for the name [name]Phoebe[/name] is the connection with [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Knight[/name]- which is such a sad story.
What mns are you considering… just wondering as I am playing with mns for [name]Phoebe[/name].

I agree that [name]Phoebe[/name] is a pretty well known name and I can’t imagine too many people will spell it wrong. It might get pronounced foh-bee sometimes, but oh well. I’m [name]Angel[/name] and I’ve had to spell my name a million times! Grown adults spell my name Angle on a regular basis and people are constantly calling me [name]April[/name], [name]Angela[/name], and Ahngel. I even had one sub tell me that I didn’t know my own name and my mother would be stupid to name me just [name]Angel[/name]. She said there was a misspelling on the role and my name was [name]Angela[/name]. OBVIOUSLY I don’t know my own name >.<
In other words, her name will be mispronounced and misspelled even if it were a simple name like Anne (or Angel ^_^) so use the name you love!
Thanks! It’s not a definite yet, I’m still considering [name]Ava[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Isla[/name] and [name]Mia[/name] as well. Middle names for [name]Phoebe[/name] were probably going to be something like [name]Isabel[/name] or [name]Charlotte[/name]. [name]Charlotte[/name] is my sister’s name which I love and [name]Isabel[/name] is my grandmother and cousin’s middle name and my dog is called [name]Isabella[/name] so a bit of her in there too
My daughter’s name is [name]Piper[/name], and I have to spell it [name]EVERY[/name] TIME I call the doctors. It’s annoying, but I don’t think there’s very many names that can escape.that. I thought [name]Piper[/name] would be in the clear, but no…
