Quill for a girl

Helllo!
I’m due to give birth in a little over 6 weeks to my 2nd girl and my husband and I have fallen in love with the name [name_m]Quill[/name_m] for her. We already have a ‘[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]’.
Typically it’s a boys name, from 'quillen". [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s too out there? My only concern is that she will spend her life having to explain her name? I want to be brave enough to use it by just need some feedback. I don’t want to tell my family as I’ve had some of my past favourites ruined by them and regretted telling them. Thoughts?

I would probably assume that a [name_m]Quill[/name_m] was a boy on first hearing th name, but it’s so unusual that I wouldn’t be surprised either way. I wouldn’t choose it myself, but it’s an interesting name with a nice sound, though I definitely prefer [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] (which I imagine you’ve already considered?)

[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_m]Quill[/name_m] are an unexpected sister set but I think they work together. [name_m]Quill[/name_m] takes [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] in more of a modern nature-name direction rather than a sweet vintage revival direction.

I actually quite like it, I don’t see it as a masculine or feminine name, pretty neutral. I do prefer [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] but [name_m]Quill[/name_m] has an artistic/literary feel to it.

The only real downfall that I see is that [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Quill[/name_m] is the name of the main character of Guardians of the [name_f]Galaxy[/name_f], which is pretty popular so you may end up with [name_f]Star[/name_f]-[name_m]Lord[/name_m] jokes.

I second everything [name_f]Katinka[/name_f] said.

I also think the relative familiarity of [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] (also nice) will make it seem less “out-there” than is otherwise might. I know a female [name_u]Quincy[/name_u], so that whole Q genre of name seems fine on a female to me.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Quilla[/name_f]? [name_m]Quill[/name_m] could be a cute nick name!!

[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_f]Quilla[/name_f] go together beautifully!!

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t tell your family until she’s here. We love our families, but let’s face it, they ruin perfectly good names for the stupidest reasons.

Onto [name_m]Quill[/name_m]. I think of it as more unisex, probably because of [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]. As far as word names go, [name_m]Quill[/name_m] actually appeals to me a lot. I actually would probably guess [name_m]Quill[/name_m] was a girl because I’ve encountered [name_f]Quilla[/name_f] – though I thought [name_f]Quilla[/name_f] was pronounced key-lah, so that feels altogether different from what you likely love about [name_m]Quill[/name_m].

I think [name_m]Quill[/name_m] fits in with [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], [name_f]Tillie[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f], etc so people might raise their eyebrows at first but ultimately be charmed by the name.

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t second guess yourself if everyone doesn’t immediately love it–there is a learning curve for people encountering new names and they’ll need time to see [name_m]Quill[/name_m] as a name and not a word.

It’s not my style, but I think it works well.

Ooh, I really like it! It is simple enough that people will get the spelling and pronunciation, but it is also distinct and spunky

Also, [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] & [name_m]Quill[/name_m] are lovely together!

I like it. It would also be a nice nod to your love of reading or writing (if you love reading/writing). I’d pair it with a more feminine middle, though, e.g. [name_m]Quill[/name_m] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f].
