I was named after my great-grandmother! She was an amazing person with a lovely name, and I’m so glad I was named after her!
-
I love my name!
-
I haven’t met anyone with my exact first name, but I’ve met others with variations of it, and people with my nickname, which I use pretty much all the time. I feel like it fits me very well. Cultural associations… there aren’t really any except for a former first lady. People my age think it’s an “old lady” name I guess, and they call me by my full first name like they’re making fun of me?
-
Nope! I love my name!
-
[name_f]My[/name_f] name has never been in the top 1,000, though its much more popular variation is!! [name_f]My[/name_f] name isn’t even on the NB database.
-
Yes. Like I said, people my age like to tease me about it, which I really don’t get.
-
I wish my parents had given me more nickname options, because I have so many options, but I just go by a name that’s super popular, and has been since I was little.
-
I don’t know. I don’t really have any feelings–about my name’s origins, that is.
-
A former first lady, but she was pretty awesome, so I’m not complaining. I’m sure, especially with it’s increasing popularity, there’ll be much more associations. There’s also a [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] character with a variation of my name, but I like that association.
-
I would love to be a Dorothea!! From my UC, I would absolutely love to be named [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] [name_u]Sage[/name_u] or [name_f]Fern[/name_f] [name_f]Theodosia[/name_f] [name_f]Opal[/name_f].
-
I was named after my father’s mother who died shortly before my parents got married.
-
I love my name.
-
Met 4 people with my name(though it’s not common)but it’s their middle name and actually not having same meaning. I realised depending on who I introduce myself to, they think I’m from a different country or a certain different ethnic group when I mention my name ( I always think it’s supposed to be quite obvious especially when the person is from my country).
-
Never
-
[name_f]My[/name_f] name has never been common in my country or anywhere in the world
-
No but people tend to sing my name when they’re familiar with the origin.
-
I sometimes don’t like it when people sing my name and draw attention to me. I like the meaning of my name
-
Meaning: It’s good/ Everything’s good
-
[name_f]My[/name_f] name appears in one of the most popular and well loved songs in my country repetitively.
10.This is really difficult. Can’t think of anything.
skipped two for privacy, though i think my name is pretty guessable if you look through my post history ^^
How did you get your name?
Parents picked! I think it was something of a last-minute decision since their top-choice name was briefly popularized by a Bachelorette star. My first name is an alternate spelling of a common name and my middle is an obscure Slavic diminutive of the name of a distant relative whom I never met.
What’s your opinion on your name?
I don’t like it; I dislike receiving communications that refer to me as my real name. Neither I nor my parents was close with the relative my name honours, which makes it difficult to view as meaningful.
What has been your experience? Have you met many people with it? Do you feel like it fits you? Any cultural associations that effect you? How do people react to it? You get the point.
I’ve met lots of people with the common spelling of my first name - right now I’m in a 13-person college seminar with three of us named it! I have a Dutch first name, a Slavic middle, and one anglicized Russian and one Irish surname, so it’s a bit of a mashup. Lots of people react to my middle name because it has a pronunciation that is unconventional in English.
Have you ever thought about changing your name?
Yes, but I worry that it would upset my grandparents. However, not necessarily because I want to, but rather because my current full name is unfortunately tied to a book I wrote and had published as an elementary schooler which I now find really embarrassing!
On the year you were born, was your name on the Top #1000 or whatever it is for the country you’re in? If not, did it appear before or after?
In the US it’s only been in the top 1000 in 2012, and it was very, very low. The conventional spelling rose sharply in the 10 years preceding my birth year and has been on the rise since. A very close variant was in the top 20 when I was born and has risen significantly since. My middle name has never been in the top 1000 nor been given to enough girls to appear in SSA data.
Have you ever been made fun of for your name?
No - it’s a hard one to rhyme and common besides!
What’s a certain pet peeve you have about your name? If you do or don’t have one, what’s one thing you love about your name?
I don’t feel that my name flows well; it feels very disconnected.
If you could change your name right now, what would you change it to? If you wouldn’t change it, what’s one name (Or combo) you would’ve loved to be born with?
May, of course! As a middle, I might take my mother’s name, and I think I’d drop my paternal surname.
- First name: my parents used to read the dictionary for fun & found it in there. Middle name: I believe my mom just always liked the sound of the spice and liked how it sounded w my first name
- Not a fan
- I have met no one else with my either of my names (although I’ve found a couple online after searching for it). I feel like it fits me in some ways, not in others. Most people mishear it or it just goes over their head completely - either way, I’m always asked multiple times to repeat my name (which is slightly annoying, but not as big of a deal as people make it out to be). Some people say “oh that’s so pretty!” Others say “wow, that’s so unique, I’ve never heard that before!” Some people say nothing.
- Yes, I was very seriously considering this for a few years in my late teens. Ultimately decided against it because it would’ve hurt my mom too much and I felt embarrassed at the thought of having to tell people I changed my name.
- It has never been in the top 1000
- I think so, but maybe not? Can’t really remember
- It’s long, it’s unusual (which I actually like about a lot of names, just not mine), I speak rather quietly and have major social anxiety, so having to repeat it multiple times for people to get it is annoying, people have a hard time remembering it
- [name_u]French[/name_u] - it means ‘mistress of the chateau’ (mistress like woman in charge, not like concubine ftr). It’s also a type of keychain. I have no strong feelings towards the meaning. [name_f]My[/name_f] middle name is a spice, but pronounced differently - also no strong feelings there.
- None
- For years I was set on [name_f]Anna[/name_f] birth name (although I wanted [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], I was going to move my birth name to the middle so it would still be there for my mom). Now it would be between [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
-
it was the only name my parents could agree on!
-
i really like it; it suits me well
-
i’ve encountered a few but it’s definitely not common. i’ve been the only student with my name in every school i’ve attended. it does fit me really well, though i would love to have a more dramatic name as well. it has a few unfortunate meanings in a few languages, but they haven’t really affected me. people don’t really react to it.
-
once, in primary school, i didn’t really like my name and tried to go by my middle. it didn’t last long. in year seven, i went by a nickname for a bit. now i prefer to go by my full first name and wouldn’t change it.
-
it was a little outside of the top 500, and has risen significantly since. there’s also a traditional ‘long form’ of my name, which was a little higher, though it has since dropped.
-
i haven’t (though there is something that it wouldn’t be too hard to make fun of, which i’ve had comments about, though they’ve never actually mocked me in the way that it would be easy to)
-
i like the repeated letters in my name. it’s a silly point, but it makes it spunky and sweet.
-
i will be abstaining from this question because i don’t want to give away my real name, but i don’t feel especially strongly about the origin or meaning - it’s kind of ehhh
-
it doesn’t really have any, that i can think of obviously, though there’s a character with my nickname in a classic novel i like!
-
theodora “theo”
also bonus answering some of these for my middle because i’ve had a more interesting experience with it
-
my parents chose it for its culture, history, and significant meaning
-
i love it !
-
this name was kind of an accident, but i’ve always loved it. i’ve never met anyone called it, and i do think it fits me very well. it has an interesting meaning, which has never really affected me negatively, but actually sort of spices it up a bit. i always get a good reception from it; lots of people think it sounds beautiful or cool or unique. the best compliment i’ve ever gotten about it was when someone called it “such a main character name”.
-
there was a bit where i was seriously considering changing it alongside my family (after we discovered the accidental implications of it which i can’t elaborate on), but mostly just for the excitement of changing (!) my name (!), not because i disliked it. i’ve since very much decided against it.
-
it’s never ranked anywhere
-
i’ve been teased about it, but never mean-spiritedly
-
it sounds very much like a food item which a few people think of when they hear it, and i get really possessive over the sounds in it
-
it’s hebrew, which i like a lot, and it has a surprising meaning which makes me like it more
-
none at all, apart from that dastardly food item
-
i would never change it, but i will suggest orpheama as a middle name for myself
1. How did you get your name?
My mother had an egg project in high school (you know the one where you take care of an egg for a week?) and part of the project was naming the egg. She spent a lot of time researching and working out names and landed on the first/middle combo that would ultimately become mine. I find it interesting that my name was never even considered for my sister who is only 13 months older than me.
2. What’s your opinion on your name?
When I was younger it was hard to spell and felt a little bit like wearing shoes that were too big and too fancy. Over time I have really begun to own my name as mine-- and maybe even become fairly particular about how it is written out and what I am called.
3. What has been your experience? Have you met many people with it? Do you feel like it fits you? Any cultural associations that effect you? How do people react to it? You get the point.
All in all, the name has served its purpose. I like that I have never met someone else with my name, but it is still recognizable. It was fun when visiting Italy and Peru seeing my name on buildings/restaurants/stores quite a bit.
4. Have you ever thought about changing your name?
Nope. Well, when I got married that was a whole conversation-- but not my first or middle name.
5. On the year you were born, was your name on the Top #1000 or whatever it is for the country you’re in? If not, did it appear before or after?
Nope! It wasn’t popular until recently
6. Have you ever been made fun of for your name?
Nope! Well, my last name had some jokes, but they were stupid.
7. What’s a certain pet peeve you have about your name? If you do or don’t have one, what’s one thing you love about your name?
I really struggled to learn to spell it when I was younger and people due have issues pronouncing it when we first meet-- this isn’t the name’s fault. I blame the people.
8. What are the origins/etymology on your name? (Meaning, Usage, Literature, Mythology, etc.) Do you like the origin? Or no strong feelings?
Latin (I believe) for strong/healthy
9. In Pop culture, what are some associations your name has?
Ummm… I think one of the Jonas brothers named their kid this name?
10. If you could change your name right now, what would you change it to? If you wouldn’t change it, what’s one name (Or combo) you would’ve loved to be born with?
Happy to keep my name. But most of my life I have heard that I look like a Claire. So with that in mind, if I had to chose an alternate name it would be Clara Josephine
- A name my parents liked. I “picked” my name as a newborn (the only of three options I didn’t cry at when they tried it out on me, ha), but some days I think I would’ve liked being an [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] [name_f]Danae[/name_f] more.
- Meh. I hate my middle, and if I ever marry, I will change my middle to [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. But at this point it just is. Most of my life I wanted to change it. If [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] weren’t so popular and have so many stereotypes I didn’t like, I would like it. I like the association to trees in the meaning, and also the tie to [name_u]George[/name_u] Mueller’s [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] Downs and his story of faith.
- I actually didn’t go to school with another [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] until my junior year of high school… and I do think it fits me. I just don’t like the stereotype that [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] is either a mean girl or a cheerleader type, because I’m nothing like either and never was.
- Hundreds of times. I got close around 2013, and was trying out [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] (if I changed it, it’d probably be to [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], today), but couldn’t find anything that truly fit and it didn’t seem worth the effort.
- It was #2 the year I was born.
- Eh, I don’t think so… my siblings call me Ashey sometimes, which I guess could turn into an insult, and I don’t like the nn, but I don’t know that anyone ever made fun of me for my first name. Last name, yes, once, but not FN.
- Spelling it [name_f]Ashely[/name_f] drives me BAT CRAZY for some reason. I also don’t like the lack of nns. I guess I could have [name_u]Ash[/name_u] but wish there was something a bit more girly… like [name_f]Lily[/name_f] or [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] or Annie… which feel much more me.
- [name_f]English[/name_f], I think. It means “Ash tree meadow”. I do like it. I’ve developed a love for tree names as a tie to my own.
- ugh, don’t really know or care… I could come up with something, but pop culture doesn’t mean a lot to me.
- Realistically, [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. If I actually changed it to [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], it’d probably be [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] or… not sure. I like that Mary’s a twist on my middle which I hate. [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] [name_u]Maria[/name_u] or [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_u]Maria[/name_u] would be considerations but [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_u]Maria[/name_u] feels much more Italian than I am. haha.
-
[name_f]My[/name_f] dad wanted me to have a Welsh name and my mum could pronounce [name_f]Carys[/name_f].
-
What’s your opinion on your name?
I love it! I guess because it’s familiar and well-known (in Wales) but also a bit unique as it’s not hugely popular. -
I have only met 1 person with the same name as me (university housemate’s sister) and come across 2 others. People generally react by saying “a lovely Welsh name” if they happen to comment on it when I introduce myself. [name_f]My[/name_f] name gets misheard/misread sometimes (a lot more when I was a kid) as [name_f]Cerys[/name_f] and that always annoyed me.
-
Nope! [name_m]Even[/name_m] when people would constantly call me [name_f]Cerys[/name_f]. I’d just wish they learn to read better instead
-
[name_f]Carys[/name_f] ranked #222 in [name_f]England[/name_f] and [name_m]Wales[/name_m] for the year I was born (I looked it up just now), but has declined in popularity by a lot since (it no longer appears in the top 500)
-
Never, at least not to my face anyway so I’m gonna assume not behind my back either
-
I love that I have a Welsh name, just don’t like when it gets misread.
-
Welsh, from “câr” or “caru” meaning “love”
-
I have watched a recent TV show where there was a character called [name_f]Carys[/name_f] but I don’t remember what it was called (it was a fictional police show where a little girl named [name_f]Carys[/name_f] goes missing I think)
-
I wouldn’t want to change my name but sometimes I think it would have been cool to have a name with more obvious/a range of nickname options, such as [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] “Liv” or [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] “Ally” “Lexi”
-
I believe it was my dad’s suggestion. [name_f]My[/name_f] mum wanted to call me Lisa-Marie after Elvis’ daughter
but, thankfully, my Dad vetoed it. They chose long (3-4 syllable) names with short (1 syllable) middle names for me and my siblings and we mostly went by nicknames at home. Except when we were in trouble, of course.
-
I love it now, but I thought it was old fashioned and a bit prissy when I was younger and I was surrounded by Jessicas, Jennifers and the like at school. It wasn’t until much later in life when I made a group of friends who all started calling me [name_f]Flick[/name_f] that I also really started to appreciate my full name more.
-
I’ve had only positive experiences with my name. Often, when I meet someone and introduce myself they’ll say “wow, that’s such a pretty name” which was always nice to hear. I’ve only ever known three other people with my name in real life (a distant cousin, a girl who was a year above me in high school, and a (not close) friend called her daughter Felicity). I think it fit me as a young girl, and now, but maybe less so as a teenager and young adult. [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite part about my name is all my nicknames (Fliss, [name_f]Flick[/name_f], FJ, [name_u]Fee[/name_u], FeeFee, Floss/y, Lif).
-
No, never. [name_f]My[/name_f] middle name doesn’t have any personal meaning to my parents and it doesn’t honour anyone in our family, they just thought it sounded nice with my first name. If I changed my name, it would have been to have a more daring middle like [name_f]Wildflower[/name_f] or something!
-
[name_u]New[/name_u] [name_u]Zealand[/name_u] only releases the top 100 baby names as far as I’m aware. In the data from 1954-2020, my name hasn’t ever been in top 100. Seen as I consider [name_f]England[/name_f] my second home (I am a citizen afterall), it wasn’t in the UK top 1000 names in the 80s either, so definitely not popular at the time. It’s #100 in the UK now though!
-
Only a couple of times when teenage boys figured out it sounded like an inappropriate word, or another word that could be used inappropriately. It was a stretch though so it never really bothered me.
-
[name_f]My[/name_f] only pet peeve is that nobody can spell it. I really don’t mind when people say, “can you spell that for me?” but when someone doesn’t ask and gets it wrong “Filisity, Phelicity etc.,” it’s a bit annoying.
-
It’s Latin and means good fortune or happiness. I do like the origin/meaning, except when I struggled with depression when I was younger and the irony of my name meaning happiness was not lost on me.
-
There was obviously the television show, [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], and then a famous British actress called [name_u]Kendal[/name_u]. That’s about it really and I can’t recall anyone making either association when they heard my name.
-
I wouldn’t change my name and there’s actually nothing I would have rather been born with (apart from perhaps a more outrageous middle name as I said earlier). I just asked my partner what names he think would suit me and he said [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] or [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. But I know those are names he likes for a baby girl so I think he’s projecting them onto me.
my mom knew a really cool lady called eliza! i think she was a museum curator, but i might be wrong on that one. all i know is that she was awesome. we also have quite a few elizabeths up the family tree so !!! it just seemed to work out that i would be elizabeth nn eliza. my first middle name is kind of a filler i think, and my second is a surname from my family tree.
honestly, i love my name. elizabeth is so versatile and really gives a lot of nickname options should i want to shake it up lol. i don’t mind my first middle name though it’s not particularly exciting. my second middle used to embarrass me a lot when i was younger but i appreciate the beauty of it a lot more now.
i’ve only had two other elizabeths in my classes, but i’ve never really felt bothered by it because i basically exclusively go by eliza and i’ve only ever met one of those (and she was itty bitty!). i will say though, the whole hamilton thing got really annoying really fast. some of my teachers do the “elIiiiIiza” thing STILL !!! to this day !!! otherwise, i’ve never really had any issues with it.
i guess i’ve thought about it in passing, but i’ve never deeply considered it.
yep! number ten
thankfully not
well, i already mentioned the hamilton thing. i guess i also don’t really like that, because rhode island is so portuguese, i get a lot of people who call me elijah lol. my school bus driver called me that for like four years BAHAHA i love the classic sound of elizabeth and the bright sound of eliza. i think it’s a name that really suits me.
elizabeth: hebrew, pledged to god
grace: uh… pretty self explanatory lol
p@ttillo: i think it has something to do with a hill? it’s scottish i believe
i don’t really think too much about it because of how uncommon my first two names are. i think they’re pretty nice though overall… though i’m not religious lol (weirdly neither are my parents)
oh there are too many to name. it’s elizabeth i mean come on
probably amelia or beatrice! oooh combos, fun. i don’t have a lot of combos on my list right now, but i love @katkabet’s mae diana !!! and basically all of @planetnames and @futuremama’s combos are so lovingly crafted and brilliant i think it would be such an honor to have any of those names.
Awwwww that’s such an incredibly sweet compliment, thank you!
aw that’s such a sweet thing to say, thank you!!
-
How I got my name: I was going to be an [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], or [name_f]Molly[/name_f] until my parents found my name! [name_f]My[/name_f] actual name shares some sounds with those names, but my parents mostly picked it for the meaning. It’s also very similar to my mom’s cousin’s name, and they liked that connection.
-
[name_f]My[/name_f] opinion on my name: I don’t love it. More on that in the next question.
-
[name_f]My[/name_f] experience with my name: [name_f]My[/name_f] name is really unusual (I’ve never met someone else with my name irl) and constantly gets misheard and mispronounced. I get a mix of confused faces and compliments. I guess it fits me pretty well; I’m certainly very used to it being my name. More on the cultural associations in #8.
-
Whether I’ve thought of changing it: When I was little I really wanted to. Now I never would–not because I particularly love it, but just because I’m very used to it and honestly changing it seems like more trouble than it would be worth.
-
Popularity: [name_f]My[/name_f] name has never charted in the country where I live.
-
Teasing: [name_f]My[/name_f] name sounds similar to a couple of words that have been readily used for teasing, but nothing too mean! It’s always been more lighthearted.
-
[name_f]Pet[/name_f] peeve about my name: I have social anxiety, so I hate having to repeat my name multiple times every time I introduce myself. A sillier pet peeve–it has a repeated letter, so I never feel like it looks neat enough when I write it unless I can get that letter to look exactly the same twice!
-
Origins/etymology: [name_f]My[/name_f] name has meanings in at least 8 different languages, and most of them are kind of fun! That’s definitely my favorite thing about it, although none of the meanings really represent my heritage.
-
Pop culture associations: I know of a singer who shares part of my name, but she’s not super famous (at least where I am). That’s the only one I can think of.
-
What I would change it to: Maybe the nickname I go by on NB, because I like it better (although it surely would come with a lot of the same problems
). I don’t think I’d actually change it though.
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is Liana…
1- There was a girl in my dads class called [name_f]Liana[/name_f] and he always really loved the name. [name_f]My[/name_f] mum really liked [name_f]Juliana[/name_f] or [name_f]Eliana[/name_f] but she preferred them shortened to [name_f]Liana[/name_f].
2- I do really like my name, it’s unique and I don’t meet a lot of people with it!
3- Right, the one thing I dislike about my name is that there’s 2 ways of pronouncing it. But I’ve learnt to accept that people will say it differently. Overall people always compliment me on my name though
4- When I was younger (around 6 or 7) I went through a phase when I didn’t like my name and I wanted to change it to [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]. Don’t ask why
5- I’m not quite sure. I was born in Hungary but I know that it’s a [name_u]French[/name_u] name, I don’t think it was too popular though, around 800?
6- Never!
7- [name_f]My[/name_f] only pet peeve is the way people spell it. [name_f]Leana[/name_f], [name_f]Lianna[/name_f], [name_f]Leanna[/name_f]. If you’re not sure how to spell it, just ask!
8- It’s [name_u]French[/name_u], meaning “to climb like a vine”. It’s also found in rainforests cause it’s a vine.
9- I’m sure there’s 1 or 2 actresses
10- I really love [name_f]Eliana[/name_f]! I wish my parents would’ve stuck with that instead of shortening it!
- How did you get your name? [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_u]Lyndsey[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] dad wouldn’t agree to anything but [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u] and I think that was because of [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u] [name_m]Wagner[/name_m] the bionic woman. [name_f]My[/name_f] brother suggested my middle name [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] mom liked the y better because she hated [name_f]Linda[/name_f]
- What’s your opinion on your name? I love [name_f]Rose[/name_f], classic and pretty, unusual for my age. It’s what I go by. Neutral on [name_u]Lindsey[/name_u] if spelled this way, dislike my spelling. It doesn’t feel like a pretty or special name
- What has been your experience? Have you met many people with it? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you feel like it fits you? Any cultural associations that effect you? How do people react to it? You get the point.
I like being [name_f]Rose[/name_f], it’s unusual to meet one and I’ve never worked with another or had one in a class with me. Most people comment nicely on it or seem thrown by it like they don’t recognize it as a name. When I went by [name_u]Lyndsey[/name_u], I always had it misspelled, no one ever commented on it nicely, and I often had classmates in college or grad school with it, there were none in my grade but several in my school. I did not like the association with dumb blonde types like [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u] Bluth, [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u] Lohan
-
Have you ever thought about changing your name?
I did change it somewhat, I started going by [name_f]Rose[/name_f] in grad school -
On the year you were born, was your name on the Top #1000 or whatever it is for the country you’re in? If not, did it appear before or after?
In 1989 [name_u]Lindsey[/name_u] and [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u] were top 100 names (both of them), [name_u]Lyndsey[/name_u] was 300 something. I think [name_u]Lindsey[/name_u] is still top 1000 but wayyyy low. I was astonished to see a kindergartner named [name_u]Lyndsey[/name_u] recently -
Have you ever been made fun of for your name?
Not for [name_u]Lyndsey[/name_u], but slightly for [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] Titanic references or silly nicknames like Rosebud -
What’s a certain pet peeve you have about your name? If you do or don’t have one, what’s one thing you love about your name?
Mine is that no one can spell [name_u]Lyndsey[/name_u] right even if it is spelled out or written down, and I dislike my spelling. With [name_f]Rose[/name_f] I don’t like being called [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] or how often people mishear it as [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]. -
What are the origins/etymology on your name? (Meaning, Usage, Literature, Mythology, etc.) Do) you like the origin? [Or no strong feelings?
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] comes from Latin [name_f]Rosa[/name_f], obviously the flower. Lyndsey/Lindsey is Scottish and [name_f]English[/name_f], island from the linden tree. I like the origin because linden trees were used as judicial and religious sites historically. -
In Pop culture, what are some associations your name has?

[name_f]Rose[/name_f]- [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], [name_m]Byrne[/name_m], [name_f]Rose[/name_f] the companion, [name_f]Rose[/name_f] off Titanic -
If you could change your name right now, what would you change it to? If you wouldn’t change it, what’s one name (Or combo) you would’ve loved to be born with?
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Leah[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]
- [name_f]My[/name_f] first name means “beloved” and my mom chose it for the meaning! [name_f]My[/name_f] middle name is my mother’s middle name.
- I do not like my first name very much because it was a name popular in the mid-70s and I was born in the late 90s. [name_f]My[/name_f] middle name is also pretty dated but prettier in spelling and sound!
- 99% of people with my name were born in the mid-70s, so if I do meet someone, they are 20+ years older and always comment on how they have never met someone younger than them with their name (lol). I do not think my name fits me (but my mom loves it!).
- Yes, but never seriously.
- Yes, actually in the top 100!
- No I have not!
- I just don’t particularly like it! Seems pretty plain to me. But I do love that my mom chose it specifically because she knew I was loved.
- It means beloved and it is French/Latin. I love the origin!
- A few popular older songs.
- I would love to be named [name_u]Holly[/name_u]! [name_m]Just[/name_m] seems sunny and bright!
- [name_f]My[/name_f] dad always liked it, so my parents used it.
- I like it a lot, and my nicknames.
- I have met, I think, 4 or 5 people with my name. I feel like my nicknames fit me and I don’t think there are many cultural associations. People seem fine with my name and I am too.
- No
- It was definitely top 1000!
- Oh my goodness yes, lol!
- I love how my name looks choppy and it’s weird, but I do! I just don’t like what letter it starts with.
- I mean, my name was a boy’s name, but that’s cool. No really strong feelings about it.
- Not really sure.
- Hmmmm… I honestly really like my name!
My name: Tara Margaritta
- How did you get your name?
My middle name, Margaritta, is my mother’s first name. Tara was a name both my parents liked. My dad liked it from Gone with the Wind. My mum liked it from a TV show in the 80s called Return to Eden. The character named Tara was very beautiful, and she wanted that for me (not sure it worked – haha!)
- What’s your opinion on your name?
I like that its not super common, but still a legitimate name. I like that I am rarely (but not never) one of multiple Taras and then must go by my surname (which is foreign and complicated). Margaritta I’d probably love if it wasn’t my mother’s name – I can’t not associate the name with her. I love her dearly, but it kind of doesn’t feel like my name, but her name that I’m borrowing.
- What has been your experience? Have you met many people with it? Do you feel like it fits you? Any cultural associations that effect you? How do people react to it? You get the point.
Regarding Tara, I have met maybe half a dozen people with my name. At one point there was 2 other Taras in my high school class, which was unexpected, but probably not that odd given I was born in the 80s during the peak of my name in my country. I do feel it fits me; I can’t imagine myself as any other name. There aren’t any cultural associations in my country that people associate with it. I did use to work in a bank that had a lot of Indian customers, and I’d get a lot of questions about being Indian, cause it’s a well-known Indian name (I’m not Indian). It’s a well-known enough name that most people know how to pronounce it, and don’t find it too weird.
- Have you ever thought about changing your name?
No.
- On the year you were born, was your name on the Top #1000 or whatever it is for the country you’re in? If not, did it appear before or after?
I’m 99% sure it was, but I’ve never actually checked.
- Have you ever been made fun of for your name?
People make jokes about Margaritta given it’s a cocktail (and my surname initials are the same as a popular brand of beer in my country), but not of Tara that I remember. Every now and then I’ll get people pronouncing it the American way as a joke.
- What’s a certain pet peeve you have about your name? If you do or don’t have one, what’s one thing you love about your name?
The American pronunciation really drives me nuts. I’ve gotten used to it, because pre-COVID I spent a lot of time in the States, but it sounds very harsh to my ear.
- What are the origins/etymology on your name? (Meaning, Usage, Literature, Mythology, etc.) Do you like the origin? Or no strong feelings?
In Ireland, Tara was the seat of the High Kings of Ireland, so it’s an Irish place name. It also means star in Punjabi and it’s a Goddess in at least one mythology. I like all the connections. I also like that it exists across multiple cultures.
Margaritta is obviously pearl, given it’s the Spanish version of Margaret.
- In Pop culture, what are some associations your name has?
The main one is actress Tara Reid, which is not the greatest association. For a while there, there seemed to be a number of Tara’s as minor characters in TV shows, but I haven’t heard it in awhile.
The main one for Margaritta is the cocktail, which often gives people a giggle.
- If you could change your name right now, what would you change it to? If you wouldn’t change it, what’s one name (Or combo) you would’ve loved to be born with?
Aurora. It’s the name of the character in my novel that I have based entirely on myself. Not sure on a middle name.
- [name_f]My[/name_f] mom heard that a celebrity named their child this and thought it was pretty. [name_f]My[/name_f] middle name she chose after my grandmother.
- I really don’t like it.
- I don’t really know a lot of people my age or older with my name, but I do hear it frequently on little kids. I’m always getting comments like “Oh! That’s my two-year-old niece’s name!”, which kind of bugs me.
- Yes. I’ve tried going by my middle name or variations of my name, but nothing’s ever really stuck. There have been a few times where I’ve seriously considered changing it, but it seems like it would be such a hassle.
- Yes, and it still is.
- Not for my first or middle name, but I have for my last name.
- I feel like it doesn’t fit me. It also makes me kind of sad that my name was mostly just picked out by my mom and that my dad didn’t really care what I was named.
- It has several possible origins.
- Mostly celebrity babies. I can’t think of any fictional characters with my name, although I’m sure there are plenty.
- I think about this all the time but I have ADHD and I’m really indecisive, so…
My name: Jessica
- How did you get your name?
My parents decided on Andrea Joy, though my dad never really liked it. Once I was born, he said I did not look like an Andrea, so they named me Jessica Claire. Claire is my mom’s name.
- What’s your opinion on your name?
It’s not terrible, but too common as it was the number one girls name the year I was born. I do like the nickname Jess or Jessa.
- What has been your experience? Have you met many people with it? Do you feel like it fits you? Any cultural associations that effect you? How do people react to it?
I know a ton of other people with my name.
- Have you ever thought about changing your name?
I did when I was younger, I liked the name Rachel
- On the year you were born, was your name on the Top #1000 or whatever it is for the country you’re in? If not, did it appear before or after?
Yes, number 1 actually
6. Have you ever been made fun of for your name?
Not that I remember
- What’s a certain pet peeve you have about your name? If you do or don’t have one, what’s one thing you love about your name?
I don’t like the ‘ica’ ending. I like my nickname Jess. The meaning of my name is also something I like’
- What are the origins/etymology on your name? (Meaning, Usage, Literature, Mythology, etc.) Do you like the origin? Or no strong feelings?

Celebrity names, like Jessica Simpson
