Rank my top ten girl's names?

If you could rank these from favorite to least favorite, and if possible tell me why you picked your favorite and least favorite. Plus anything else you’d like to share! [name_f]My[/name_f] main criteria for a name is that it needs to have a nickname, since my partner and I both go by slightly uncommon nicknames for our first names I think that would be a really cute connection.

    [name_f][/name_f]
  1. [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] ‘Max’ [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] is seriously underrated and [name_m]Max[/name_m] so cool and full of personality on a girl!
  2. [name_f][/name_f]
  3. [name_f]Theda[/name_f] ‘Teddy’ [name_f][/name_f]- I think [name_f]Theda[/name_f] is so charming, vintage and underused! And [name_m]Teddy[/name_m] gives it a very cute, current feel

You have such a lovely list, and I adore all the spunky nicknames! Ranked in order of preference:

  1. Alberta “Birdie” – absolutely loving Alberta “Birdie”! She’s so spunky & has a lovely vintage charm that is just so underrated. I think Alby / Albie would make a lovely nickname options as well!
  2. Marigold “Goldie”
  3. Edith “Edie”
  4. Theda “Teddy” – Theda is so stunning & underused! Teddy is adorable as well!
  5. Jordana “Georgie” – love Jordana & Georgie! Though I also wanted to suggest Jory or Jordy as nicknames as well!
  6. Francesca “Frankie”
  7. Valerie “Valley”
  8. Maxine “Max”
  9. Winifred “Freddie”
  10. Scotia “Scottie” – I don’t mind Scottie, I just don’t love Scotia as a first name as it does feel very tied to the Canadian Province. For Scottie, I would probably opt for Scarlett or just Scottie as a standalone

  1. Edith “Edie” - erm, so I’m obviously completely biased on this one, and I have no shame over that!
  2. Theda “Teddy” - really love this one, Theda is a great alternative to Theodora to get to Teddy for a girl
  3. Alberta “Birdie” - love Birdie
  4. Marigold “Goldie” - :orange_heart:
  5. Francesca “Frankie”
  6. Winifred “Freddie”
  7. Jordana “Georgie” - love Georgie, but think Georgina or Georgiana are better as first names
  8. Valerie “Valley”
  9. Scotia “Scottie”
  10. Maxine “Max”

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] ‘Edie’ [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite name AND my favorite nickname from this list! [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is just a great name [name_f][/name_f]- tailored, classy, unexpectedly soft, so pretty and wearable for any personality [name_f][/name_f]- and I like the sound and the sweetness of [name_f]Edie[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Francesca[/name_f] ‘Frankie’ [name_f][/name_f]- I like [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] because it’s strong, elegant, well-known but not necessarily seen that often. [name_m]Frankie[/name_m] adds a fun spunky element.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Alberta[/name_f] ‘Birdie’ [name_f][/name_f]- Like the Nameberry description says, [name_f]Alberta[/name_f] is ‘jazzy’ [name_f][/name_f]- not that clunky. I really like how it sounds, actually. Biride is sweet.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] ‘Goldie’ [name_f][/name_f]- I love [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] (possibly more than Alberta) but [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] knocked it down one place. I think I would prefer [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_m]Ari[/name_m] as a nickname.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Theda[/name_f] ‘Teddy’ [name_f][/name_f]- Nice to see [name_f]Theda[/name_f], even though I prefer it more as a short form itself.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] ‘Freddie’ [name_f][/name_f]- I kind of like [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], but not [name_m]Freddie[/name_m]. I guess you don’t want [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], but I’ve always thought [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] ‘Wendy’ was possible…

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Valerie[/name_f] ‘Valley’

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Jordana[/name_f] ‘Georgie’

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Scotia[/name_f] ‘Scottie’

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Maxine[/name_f] ‘Max’ [name_f][/name_f]- [name_m]Max[/name_m] is harsh and inelegant to me, and despite the extra syllable, [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] doesn’t feel too distinct from it.

I like everything from [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] to [name_f]Maxine[/name_f], and really like the top three. I have mixed feelings about [name_f]Theda[/name_f], which I think sounds cool but is also more unusual than my general taste, and then [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Alberta[/name_f], and [name_f]Scotia[/name_f] are all too clunky for me. (I know [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is also clunky, but I like it more and I also think [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is very cute)

[name_f][/name_f]

Including nicknames and assuming you plan to mostly call them the nickname:

[name_f][/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f]

  20. [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Alberta[/name_f] actually moves up the list for me because I really like [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], but for several of your options I very much prefer the name on its own (Valerie, Jordana) or I prefer an alternate nickname (Winnie versus Freddie). However, obviously the child may choose not to go by their nickname or go by an alternate one (Mimi for [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Allie[/name_f] for [name_f]Alberta[/name_f], who knows?) [name_f][/name_f] and I think most of your names have a lot of options/flexibility. I think the only one I would argue against is [name_f]Scotia[/name_f], I’ve never seen it used as a name aside from the area [name_f]Nova[/name_f] [name_f]Scotia[/name_f], and I don’t particularly like either the full name or the nickname options.

[name_f][/name_f]

I love [name_f]Maxine[/name_f]! I think it’s such a cute name and love the nickname [name_m]Max[/name_m] for a girl. I’m always surprised it’s so underused.

[name_f][/name_f]

I think the nickname [name_m]Teddy[/name_m] is cute for a girl. However, I don’t love [name_f]Theda[/name_f]. The pronunciation feels clunky and it just feels like a heavy name for a baby to me. Something like [name_f]Theodosia[/name_f] nickname [name_m]Teddy[/name_m] I’d like more!

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] ‘Edie’ → strong but sweet, sparky and vintage! [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is so charming
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Francesca[/name_f] ‘Frankie’ → such a great blend of sassy and elegant
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Theda[/name_f] ‘Teddy’ → distinctive in sound and totally cool
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Alberta[/name_f] ‘Birdie’ → clunky cool and [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] is so fun
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Jordana[/name_f] ‘Georgie’ → one you so rarely hear and quite distinctive

[name_f][/name_f]

On my least favourites:

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Scotia[/name_f] ‘Scottie’ → while I like the idea and nn [name_f]Scottie[/name_f] is pretty charming, I find [name_f]Scotia[/name_f] way to close to another word (this might just be me though)
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Winifred[/name_f] → it’s well loved on here, so I’m in the minority, I just don’t love any of these sounds together. Though [name_m]Freddie[/name_m] is cool

Thank you for the feedback, it was really interesting to see how the ranking changes for you with/without the nicknames! I love the point that they could go by so many things. Like for [name_f]Jordana[/name_f], it’s actually partially a way to honor my grandpa and brother (both called Dan) so maybe she could go by Dani/Danny, especially if she doesn’t mind the name being similar to her uncles, but if she doesn’t like the similarity she could be [name_f]Georgie[/name_f], or [name_m]Jory[/name_m], or even [name_m]Jordan[/name_m] if she wants to use a nickname.

[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Alberta[/name_f] “Birdie”

[name_f]Jordana[/name_f] is my favorite because I personally love [name_m]Jordan[/name_m] myself for a girl; I love the unisex feeling and all the different nicknames and I just think it’s a fun, spunky name!
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Scotia[/name_f] is my least favorite because it feels too tied to the place and I’m not really a fan of place names. I also think it might be difficult for some people to pronounce. Though I DO love [name_f]Scottie[/name_f] as a nn, it’s very endearing!

[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Francesca[/name_f] “Frankie” [name_f][/name_f]- I prefer Fran/Franny as a nickname. I’ve never been a huge fan of [name_m]Frankie[/name_m] for a girl. But I do love [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]!
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Theda[/name_f] “Teddy” [name_f][/name_f]- I prefer [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] with [name_m]Teddy[/name_m], and [name_f]Theda[/name_f] just on its own, but I do love it. It’s very pretty and I’d love to see [name_f]Theda[/name_f] used a little more
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Winifred[/name_f] “Freddie” [name_f][/name_f]- I prefer [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] for [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], but I think [name_m]Freddie[/name_m] works on a girl. There’s an influencer named [name_m]Freddy[/name_m] who sometimes shows up on my TikTok feed and it was the first time I’d heard it on a woman (other than [name_m]Freddie[/name_m] Lounds in the [name_m]Hannibal[/name_m] TV show). [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Maxine[/name_f] “Max” [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] is so ripe for a comeback! [name_m]Max[/name_m] is really cute on a girl.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Alberta[/name_f] “Birdie” [name_f][/name_f]- I like [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] for [name_f]Alberta[/name_f]! I’ve not considered that before. [name_f][/name_f][name_f]Jordana[/name_f] “Georgie” [name_f][/name_f]- [name_f]Jordana[/name_f] is just okay to me. I definitely prefer it to [name_m]Jordan[/name_m]. [name_f]Georgie[/name_f] is a cute and unexpected nickname!
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Valerie[/name_f] “Valley” [name_f][/name_f]- I like [name_f]Valley[/name_f] more than [name_f]Valerie[/name_f], but I like a lot of the other names on this list a lot more

[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] “Goldie”- I feel like this is rising in popularity so much but I love it. It’s more whimsical for my personal style but it’s a name that is so cute and fun. [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] Hawn has really made [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] feel timeless and like a ray of pure sunshine.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Francesca[/name_f] “Frankie” [name_f][/name_f]- this is another timeless name. [name_m]Frankie[/name_m] is spunky and [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] is ultra cool to me. They are a perfect full name/nickname match.

[name_f]Alberta[/name_f] “Birdie” [name_f][/name_f]- this one surprises me that i would personally put it so high but the [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] nickname is one I love. I think [name_f]Alberta[/name_f] is unique and vintage feeling in a refreshing way.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Maxine[/name_f] “Max” [name_f][/name_f]- [name_m]Max[/name_m] as a nickname is very cool to me. I don’t love [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] but I think it could grow on me. I’ve met on [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] and she didn’t fit the name and it’s skewed my perspective.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Theda[/name_f] “Teddy” [name_f][/name_f]- Similar to [name_m]Max[/name_m] in that I love the nickname. [name_f]Theda[/name_f] is already so short, a nickname like [name_m]Teddy[/name_m] feels forced to me.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Jordana[/name_f] “Georgie” [name_f][/name_f]- I find [name_f]Jordana[/name_f] to be refreshing to see and would be excited to meet one. [name_f]Georgie[/name_f] feels very forced especially with this spelling. I think it would get a lot of questions and needing explanation and that just isn’t necessary with some of your other names.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Scotia[/name_f] “Scottie” [name_f][/name_f]- I like [name_f]Scottie[/name_f] on a girl a lot. I like [name_f]Scotia[/name_f] because my family is Scottish and that’s special to me but I find the name on a person a bit on the pretentious side and not on the wow, what a unique sophisticated name side that I think a person would be going for.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] “Edie”- Cute, basic in comparison to your others. Nothing wrong with it but you have better options.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Valerie[/name_f] “Valley” [name_f][/name_f]- I have to say my wife loves [name_f]Valerie[/name_f] and I find it dated. I also have a family member whose family’s last name is [name_f]Valley[/name_f] and it’s hard for me to see it not only in that context but also the noun itself. I think the sound of it is cute and see why it’s appealing but seeing it spelled out, I don’t like it as muchu.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] “Freddie”- I like [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] as a nickname more but I do feel it’s becoming overdone. [name_m]Freddie[/name_m] is just okay to me, nothing wrong with it but I don’t find it as easy to put on someone as say [name_f]Scottie[/name_f] for a girl.

Your list is so sweet!

[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Maxine[/name_f] nn [name_m]Max[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] because I’m a sucker for a good floral name and [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] is the most sunshiny sweet nickname ever!

[name_f][/name_f]

And [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] nn [name_m]Max[/name_m] because I can’t seem to see it on anything but a grumpy old lady? [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Wish[/name_f] I could! [name_f][/name_f] I really like [name_f]Maxima[/name_f] but [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] does nothing for me.

[name_f][/name_f]

I have to say, I miss [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] nn [name_f]Scottie[/name_f]!

[name_f][/name_f]

Not really too related to this thread, but do you like Leni/Lenny, [name_m]Leo[/name_m], or [name_m]Kit[/name_m] for a girl? [name_f][/name_f] Something like [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] nn [name_m]Leo[/name_m] or [name_f]Leni[/name_f] or [name_f]Keturah[/name_f] nn [name_m]Kit[/name_m] or something feels a lot like you? [name_f][/name_f] Especially [name_f]Leonora[/name_f]!

[name_f][/name_f]

Good luck!

[name_f]Maxine[/name_f] nn [name_m]Max[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Edith[/name_f] nn [name_f]Edie[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Francesca[/name_f] nn [name_m]Frankie[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Jordana[/name_f] nn [name_f]Georgie[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Scotia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Scottie[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Theda[/name_f] nn [name_m]Teddy[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Winifred[/name_f] nn [name_m]Freddie[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Alberta[/name_f] nn [name_f]Birdie[/name_f]

Thank you for your feedback! I also liked [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] better for [name_f]Scottie[/name_f], but my neighbor just had her baby last week and used [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] :smiling_face_with_tear:[name_f][/name_f] I’m so happy for her but now I’m back on the hunt for another way to get to [name_f]Scottie[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

I do love [name_m]Kit[/name_m] for a girl, but I think I like it a bit better for a boy because I can use two honor names (Kimball Troy) to get there in a super adorable way. So it’s on my short list for boys right now! I appreciate the suggestion of [name_f]Leonora[/name_f], it does totally fit stylistically with the names I like. It’s not an immediate wow for a first name but [name_f]Leni[/name_f] is so cute, I’m going to have to mull it over

Oh I forgot about [name_m]Kimball[/name_m] [name_m]Troy[/name_m]!

[name_f][/name_f]

I think there’s other options if you like Leni—Eleanor nn [name_f]Leni[/name_f] is on my list, but I think [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], etc., also work!

[name_f][/name_f]

What a shame about [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] It’s a beautiful name and I loved the pairing of [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] and [name_f]Scottie[/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] What about something like [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Colette[/name_f] or [name_f]Saskia[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] nn [name_f]Scottie[/name_f]? [name_f][/name_f] If you’re not sold on [name_f]Scotia[/name_f]?
