My husband is currently obsessed with the name [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] for our baby boy who is due in [name_u]March[/name_u]. I like the sound of it, but thought it wasn’t usable until recently. It’s starting to grow on me & I like that it has [name_m]Christian[/name_m] meaning & that it’s roots are from the latin word for redemption. I also am a fan of C.S. [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] & [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] is the name of the main character in one of his trilogies. [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] [name_m]Stewart[/name_m] also played a character named [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] & there is currently a young adult author with the same name. So it seems that it is more usable than I had previously thought. I’m just unsure if it really could be first name material. If we would use it as a first name, his name would be [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] [name_m]Hayes[/name_m] (which I think sounds kind of awesome).
Or is this better suited for a middle name? If we would use it as a middle name, our options would be:
I honestly have to say not a fan. I feel it has a bad meaning. It it totally up to you. Go with how you feel about a name. If you really like it and have your mind set on it use it. Go with your gut on a baby name. You will be the one calling it out. I like [name_u]August[/name_u] or [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] for a first name.
Really do not get this name. Makes me think of kidnapping! Why would you put that on your child, it’s like painting a target on their back! If you really love it, use it as a middle.
Normally I dislike surname and ‘word’ names but I think this could be a ‘handsome [name_m]Ransom[/name_m]’ guilty pleasure. Very usable as a middle and rather nice as a first.
First thought is also of kidnapping, I would suggest using it in the middle place if you want to use it. [name_m]Silas[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] are nice names!
So I personally love the name, and have since I first read the Space Trilogy when I was in middle school. I think it’s not that far off from names like [name_m]Samson[/name_m] or [name_m]Anson[/name_m], and with the wave of word names out there currently, it’s totally wearable. I think the negative connotation with someone being held for ransom comes from it not being seen as a name, but as a word. Once it’s his name, people will find it much more pleasant. It has a lovely sound to it and, again, a very strong [name_m]Christian[/name_m] symbolism. I say go for it as a first! It’s a very cool, edgy, and unique name but not too far beyond the norm that it seems out of left field.
Actually, I think it will seem weirder as a middle because it won’t be “worn” as often. Again, once it’s his name and he’s [name_u]Baby[/name_u] [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] or Handsome [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] or whatever, people will stop hearing it as a word. If you leave it in the middle spot, it will get less use and always seem more word-like.
I love [name_m]Ransom[/name_m], and I automatically think of [name_m]Christ[/name_m]'s death on the cross, giving ransom for our sins. No better connotation for a name! We’d have used it for son #2 had a friend not used it first. Go for it as a first name!!
However, [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] [name_m]Hayes[/name_m] seems super-surname-y and western and that’s not really my cup of tea. Not that bad, though. Sounds like a sibset. I love [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] [name_m]Silas[/name_m], [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], and [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u].
I too am a Christian, a CS [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] fan and have heard of some of the other bearers, but I still don’t like it as a first name. If just has a very negative connotation. It feels like naming a child Kidnap or Coupon or Sacrifice!
As a middle name, I could get behind it. It’s not an unpleasant sound combination and the meaning to you could save it.
I love the [name_m]Christian[/name_m] meaning, although I agree that the word ransom does have negative connotations. I think it’s better as a middle name. I like [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] and [name_u]Everett[/name_u] [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] from your list.
My 2nd cousins name is [name_m]Ransom[/name_m], and at first I was confused about it
After two years of questioning my cousin, I have actually come to love it!
I love the thought of [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] as a first name. I have reservations about it because of the “held for ransom” meaning, but I think the other associations ([name_m]Christ[/name_m]'s ransom, [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] from the Space Trilogy, [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] [name_m]Stewart[/name_m]'s character) make me love it enough to consider using it anyway. I recently found out a teenage friend of mine has a classmate named [name_m]Ransom[/name_m], and I would be thrilled to meet a little [name_m]Ransom[/name_m].
My first thought was [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] Riggs, an increasingly popular YA author. I personally would use [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] in the middle. It’d be just a little too tough to grow up with that name, but putting it in the middle gives him the option of using later in life if he likes it more than his first. Of your first names, I like [name_m]Silas[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], and I suggest [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], [name_u]Micah[/name_u], and [name_m]Gideon[/name_m].
Sorry but I think this ‘choose any word/surname and use it for a name’ trend is getting silly now. I agree with everyone else who said it just reminds them of kidnapping which is a terrible connotation.
If it’s the sound you like then how about some of these:
I agree with the other posters about the kidnapping connotation, but I don’t think it’s a total show stopper. Nonetheless, here is another similar sounding name, I quite like: [name_m]Rasmus[/name_m]. It means “beloved” and is of scandinavian origin, I think.
No offense, but I don’t like [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] for a name simply for the meaning of the word. To be ransomed is to be kidnapped and the kidnapper demands money to return the person.
[name_m]Ransom[/name_m] or [name_m]Ransome[/name_m] isn’t all that uncommon in the South. I like it as either first or second. I like [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] [name_m]Hayes[/name_m], or [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u], or [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_m]Ransom[/name_m]. Not a fan of [name_m]Silas[/name_m] because of [name_m]Silas[/name_m] Marner.
