Re-evaluating my list

Now that my husband and I are TTC, we have been re-evaluating our name list seriously. Boys seem to be easy as we would be pretty set on [name_m]Roland[/name_m] [name_m]Craig[/name_m], though there is a slim chance of [name_u]Everett[/name_u]/[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] [name_m]Craig[/name_m]. [name_m]Eugene[/name_m] may be a middle we play with, too. Girls were a little more all over the place with.

DH here is pretty picky with names, and doesn’t have any ‘loves’ for girl names. He likes something unusual but not weird as he words it. His style seems to be unusual classics.

My style is a bit more bold. I love a strong, elegant, feminine name. Last name is a color word name, starts with G. Think color of grass.

The current top 3 we agree on:

[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]- I’ve always had a crush on this, so elegant, yet strong. I love how fierce it sounds. This is also the name of the wedding package we had at our wedding venue. It makes me love it more and was the reason DH decided he likes it.

[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] - This has been my top choice for years. I love that its strong, feminine, has a scientific connection which my nerdy science self loves.

[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]- I love this, such a sweet beauty, but I’m not sure if it feels out of place. Like its not as strong as [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f].

Other names I love or he loves:
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] - I love this and could easily be top 2 for me, but he does not like it for some reason.
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]- Doesn’t work with last name.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Nora[/name_f] - Is [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] too close to [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]? I know [name_f]Nora[/name_f] is.
[name_f]Viviana[/name_f]
[name_f]Annabel[/name_f]/[name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] - He really likes this for some reason, it seems plain compared to some of the others to me.
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] - Rhymes with our last name
[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]- he doesn’t like this.
[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] - I love this and could easily be top for me too but I think its too long as a first name. DH likes [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] but I don’t think it works with the last name.

Middle names would be family names, honoring [name_f]Ann[/name_f], [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] or [name_f]Louise[/name_f] or some combo/ spin off of them.

Any stand outs, any suggestions, thoughts, opinions?

Thank you.

Firstly, I love [name_m]Roland[/name_m] [name_m]Craig[/name_m]! [name_m]Roland[/name_m] is so underused for babies nowadays, despite names like [name_u]Rylan[/name_u]/[name_m]Ryland[/name_m]/[name_u]Ryan[/name_u]/[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] being popular.
I think [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] is stunning and the connection is so sweet and romantic. [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] are beautiful names, but I fell in love with [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] for you after I heard the reasoning behind it. Plus it’s a beautiful name, and it has lovely nicknames if you’re into that.
You seem to like longer, romantic names so here are some ideas:

[name_f]Zephirine[/name_f]

My favorite of your options are [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]. Both are significant to you and work well with your surname. They also seem to fit with the style and vibe of many of your top choices, so it is seems likely you will continue to be pleased with them. With your surname, I think these longer, flowing names work really well. Sound-wise, [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is probably my favorite with the surname, by a small margin.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

I’m in the same boat as you. Boy names are way easier. [name_m]Roland[/name_m] & [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] are both handsome choices. I like [name_u]Everett[/name_u] too, but it’s a bit more common which makes it less interesting.

Here are my thoughts on your girl list:

[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]- This seems like a winner. You guys both love it plus it has special meaning. I’m not personally a huge fan, but there’s no good reason. It’s a neat name.

[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] - This is pretty & bold. And the science connection is very cool. I think that it’s way more common though than [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]. I can’t say that I love either of these top two w/your ln. [name_m]Just[/name_m] a bit ‘r’ heavy, but probably not a deal breaker. Are you a nn person? The only nn here is [name_u]Rory[/name_u], and [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] may end up being called [name_f]Sera[/name_f] or [name_f]Fifi[/name_f]? I guess make sure that you’re okay w/those. Something to think about.

[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]- Aw, this is gorgeous. It’s my favorite from your top three, & it sound best w/your ln. It’s bold & elegant, but also softer.

[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] -This is similar to [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], but less over done. It has a nicer sound in my opinion, & sounds better w/your ln too.

[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]-This is okay. Also not great w/your ln. That’s a hard one to work with! Lots of cute nns. I like [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] & [name_f]Vivie[/name_f] a lot. [name_f]Evie[/name_f] & [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] are good too.

[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]-Yeah, that may be a bit much w/the ln.

[name_f]Luna[/name_f]-This is okay. Kind of trendy. I know a million dogs named this for some reason. I love [name_f]Lula[/name_f] though for some reason.

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]/[name_f]Nora[/name_f] --I love [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]! It’s on the top of my list. It’s classic, strong & beautiful. It’s pretty popular though. And [name_f]Nora[/name_f] is pretty on its own (also very popular), but [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nora[/name_f] doesn’t make sense to me. [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nora[/name_f] seems better. And it’s a bit closer to [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nellie[/name_f] or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].

[name_f]Viviana[/name_f]-Ooh, fancy. I kind of prefer [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]. It seems sleeker, but this is nice. I love [name_f]Vivie[/name_f] & [name_f]Ani[/name_f].

[name_f]Annabel[/name_f]/[name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] - Aw, it’s cute. I like it, but it does sound a little homey next to your bolder names.

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] - It does rhyme w/your ln.

[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]- I should like this, but I can’t get into it.

[name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] -I’m not a fan of double barrel names personally. This is a pretty fn/mn combo, but [name_f]Anna[/name_f] isn’t terribly exciting.

Sorry if my thoughts are so jumbled. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps a little.

[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] seems like a stand out choice to me -strong, pretty and bold but also meaningful.

[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is great too - celestial, strong and funky.

[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] or [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] are great!!

[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Viviana[/name_f] and [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] are nice too

[name_f]Annabella[/name_f], [name_f]Linnea[/name_f], [name_f]Acacia[/name_f], [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], [name_f]Estella[/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Josette[/name_f], Miranda and [name_f]Angelica[/name_f] also came to mind

top 2 faves are [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] & [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]

PS: I truly don’t understand the issue/idea with having Eleanor (nn Nora) on your list if Aurora is on your list. If you like them both, consider them both. It’s okay and natural to like names that seem alike to you. The idea it cannot be considered because you think it’s similar is… unless the name Aurora belongs to a sibling, or you are having twin girls and one is named Aurora, then I could understand the hesitation with pairing Eleanor & Aurora. Or perhaps one name connects with a relative and there being some issue in that respect. Or, if perhaps you are thinking about future siblings and what you meant to say is that if you use one name you cannot choose the other; then I can understand this hesitation… But beyond that, I think you are making an issue where there isn’t one.
And for the record, Eleanor is lovely sounding and classy.

Certainly, Aurora is pretty too. Comes with hard R sounds, but pretty (and evocative). Worth nothing is that Aurora paired with your surname gives a distinctively strong nature vibe. This can be something to love and indeed another specific reason to choose that pairing. Yet, it is also inescapable as both first and last name directly connect with nature without other connotations. Well, besides colour. Not to say that it is not a good combination - and it’s definitely complementary - I just want to remind you that it is a very very specific vibe. If a combination with some variability and balance is preferred, Eleanor or Seraphina provides this better than the name Aurora. My two cents.

I like [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] but some others could be:
[name_f]Avalyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Amara[/name_f]
Bellona
[name_f]Charity[/name_f]
[name_f]Camille[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]/[name_f]Carolyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Danielle[/name_f]
[name_u]Ever[/name_u]
[name_f]Felicia[/name_f]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Kyla[/name_f]
[name_f]Serenity[/name_f]
[name_f]Amber[/name_f]
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Coleen[/name_f]
[name_f]Rachel[/name_f]

Oh, by the way: If you are thinking about the pair as sibling names, Eleanor & Aurora, it is do-able within reason. The key is in the nicknames I guess. If you do use nicknames that is. Yes, Eleanor can be Nora, but then not Aurora, you are probably right about this. (I do think Nora derives from Eleanor more naturally than from Aurora but I can see the leap with Aurora too. Btw, another likely nickname for Aurora is Rory… though, in my opinion, I like Aurora best as a full name.) Anyway, if you are pairing theses names together, you would have decide on whether you use nicknames with them and about Nora… Possibly give up using Nora as a nickname. Indeed they get bit tricky if you go into nickname territory. Or, you can think of them as complementary… I think would be best to simply avoid nicknames and stick with the full names. I do find Eleanor & Aurora to be elegant and complementary as a pair, in full name form.

Thank you guys for the comments. It’s helped me wrap my head around some of my thoughts. My heart goes back and forth between [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think any of these (any name on the list) sound best with [name_m]Roland[/name_m] and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]/[name_u]Everett[/name_u]?

I appreciate the suggestions too. So many good ones such as [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f], [name_f]Arabella[/name_f]/[name_f]Annabella[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] are just a few that caught my eye. Some are unusual as family members have names very similar (we have a soon to be niece going to be [name_f]Amelia[/name_f])

Have you thought of [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]? It may be complementary with your style and surname. The meaning is lovely, too.

My concern for [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is that they have very similar sounds, both have a very heavy -OR sound and would be too similar as sisters in the future. Also with [name_m]Roland[/name_m] as a potential brother, I could see this becoming confusing in real life.

[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] seems like the winner for you two! It’s strong, feminine and elegant - unusual but not ‘weird’ as your DH puts it. It also holds personal meaning for you two, which is a massive bonus. Personally, I find it more appealing spelt [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] - it feels more magical to me. However, [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]'s spelling appears more classic so it might appeal more to your husband.

My suggest would be [name_f]Delphine[/name_f]/[name_f]Delfina[/name_f]. [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] is beautiful, sleek, elegant and strong. It’s unusual but familiar. [name_f]Delfina[/name_f] shares more of the same sounds as [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], which is why I also suggest it - however, I do prefer the look and feel of [name_f]Delphine[/name_f]. Both names offer the cute nickname of [name_f]Delphi[/name_f] too!

I really like [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], which has been on my girl list before - I like Saffy as a cute nickname for a little one! I also like that [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] gives you the option of [name_u]Rory[/name_u] for a nickname

Other suggestions:

[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Etta[/name_f]’
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]/[name_f]Clemency[/name_f] (could be ‘[name_u]Clemmie[/name_u]’)
[name_f]Euphemia[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Effie[/name_f]’
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] (obviously various NN’s here)
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] ([name_u]Ottie[/name_u] / [name_f]Tilly[/name_f])

I know you didn’t mention whether you were fussed about using a nickname or not, I always think about them as good to be aware what others might try and use, how it effects initials etc.

[name_f]Happy[/name_f] name hunting x

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and comments. I appreciate them and has given my DH and I a good talking/starting point for us. DH last night told me his favorites right now are [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] and [name_f]Nora[/name_f], just [name_f]Nora[/name_f] not [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], so I think our hearts in agreement for this second. Middle names are a whole another ball game we will tackle when the time comes.

As for nicknames, we’re not really nickname people. I don’t mind to a point if other people shorten their names, but my DH and I would call them their names we named them. But if a natural nickname arises, so be it. If I really had to pick it would be Phina and [name_f]Aura[/name_f]/[name_f]Rora[/name_f] as nicknames. We have a dog named [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] as well and she has a lot of nicknames, not a single one relating to her name at all. She might as well think her name is Doggo/Doggosaurus lol.

Thank you everyone. If anyone has any good middle name suggestions, I’m all ears.

I think [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] is really sweet.

I also love the personal tie you have with [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]!

I like [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] over [name_u]Everett[/name_u].
Of the girl’s names I think [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is my favorite with [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] close behind.
