Reactions: Ismay

I recently read a book called The Water’s [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] by [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] Rendell. One of the characters is called [name_f]Ismay[/name_f] and, while I’m sort of neutral on whether this character is a positive association or not, the name really grew on me. I like that it is similar to [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], so it is familiar enough that I wouldn’t expect much of an issue with pronunciation. I don’t know if I would use it as a first name or as a middle, but I could see myself using it somehow.

Thoughts on the name? In your opinion, is this name wearable for a girl these days? What sort of vibe do you get from [name_f]Ismay[/name_f]?

I feel like it may get mixed up with [name_f]Esme[/name_f] a lot? I’m not a big fan of it, as it doesn’t quite look right to me. It’s not a bad name by any means, I just can’t quite get into it. I suppose it could be wearable though.

@leafsgirl44: That’s actually something that attracted me to [name_f]Ismay[/name_f], is that it is similar to [name_f]Esme[/name_f]! To me, it’s a better alternative. But I totally get what you are saying. It sort of looks or sounds like something is missing. That doesn’t quite bother me, but I do think that should be taken into consideration, for sure. Thanks

I really like it. And definitely see it as usable.

I think it’s beautiful! Familiar sounds, but very rare as a whole.

When I look at it, for some reason I see the word dismay. I’m sorry, don’t mean to be rude, just not a fan. However, I do completely understand the fascination with names from books, I just read a book and loved the main characters name but it just didn’t really seem to work well with my other kids names. I typed in the name [name_f]Ismay[/name_f] on a different website and these were other names that came up for “names you might like”

[name_f]Cadence[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_u]Peyton[/name_u], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Colette[/name_f]

I love it. Great alternative to [name_f]Esme[/name_f].

Not a fan. I see/hear “dismay.”

It’s definitely usable!

I, too, prefer it to [name_f]Esme[/name_f], but agree that it would be confused with [name_f]Esme[/name_f] a lot. I like that it’s phonetic as well.

i’m not so sure, everytime i look at it i see dismay. Its certainly not the worst name in the world though and it sounds quite pretty, i probably prefer the sound to [name_f]Esme[/name_f] actually, although the two would probably get confused a lot

I don’t mind it, but I don’t know how to pronounce it.

Is it said iz-may or es-may?

I think of the word dismay.

I see/read “dismay” without the D. :frowning:

Otherwise, it looks like a butchered spelling of [name_f]Esme[/name_f]. I like the idea of it and the letters etc, it could be beautiful, but it unfortunately does not seem to work for me.

I think [name_f]Ismay[/name_f] is really lovely! Personally prefer [name_f]Esme[/name_f], but [name_f]Ismay[/name_f] is pretty as well.

It makes me think of the controversial Titanic survivor [name_m]Bruce[/name_m] [name_f]Ismay[/name_f]:

I think it’s a pretty name. It’s different but not crazy.

I love it as [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Ismay[/name_f] in your signature.

My reaction when I saw it in your sig earlier was “ooo… funky!” I really like it. Reminded me of [name_f]Esme[/name_f], which I adore. Similar sound - cute, sassy, etc.
