Really Struggling with a Name

[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]: I love how stylish and youthful this name sounds. I love old-fashioned names. I’m not sure if I like Auddie for a nickname.

[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]: I love the meaning of this name. I think of flowers in a meadow on a summer day. I also think of [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] from the Peanuts or [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_u]Steele[/name_u] from Sense and Sensibility.

[name_f]Julia[/name_f]: I love how elegant, classic, and youthful this name is. I’m not sure how I feel about the meaning “sky Father.” I think about [name_f]Julia[/name_f] in the Bible.

[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]: [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite person in the Bible. I love how simple and sweet the name is but it sounds a little harsh.

[name_f]Sarah[/name_f]: I love the way this name sounds and the meaning. I think of [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] from the Bible.

[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]: I think of [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] from the Bible. I love how this name sounds. I’m not sure if I like [name_f]Gail[/name_f] as a nickname

I love [name_f]Julia[/name_f] the most on your list. The meaning I have found for it it “youthful”, which I like so much better!

[name_f]Every[/name_f] name on your list is really great, actually. [name_f]My[/name_f] next favorites would be [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] & [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].

Second vote for [name_f]Julia[/name_f] from me. It’s unexpected yet recognizable. I love [name_u]Jules[/name_u] as a nickname. [name_f]My[/name_f] second choice would be [name_f]Audrey[/name_f].

my personal favourite from your list is audrey !! she’s stunning and perfectly draws the line between cosy/traditional/familiar and unexpected/glamorous/fresh. stylish is the perfect word to describe audrey. if you don’t like audie, how do you feel about addie, aurie, or dee as sweet nicknames?

my second choice for you is abigail, which has a lovely bouncy and bright feeling. she’s classic and familiar, but still feels fresh and exciting on a little one !! she also has that biblical collection which is clearly significant for you. i wouldn’t worry about gail - i think people are very unlikely to go there, especially if you haven’t asked. i think abby is a bit inevitable though, but i don’t think that’s a bad thing.

brief thoughts on the others:

  • lucy - very pretty sound and meaning but so unbearably popular around me that i’m just tired of her im sorry i know it’s a me thing but i absolutely cannot
  • julia - just not for me !! this feels very serious and buttoned up, and is definitely a bit of a ‘mum name’ around me. if it helps, though, the etymology of julia is uncertain - the “sky father” meaning (from jupiter) is only one hypothesis
  • ruth - i like the meaning but i also find the sound a bit serious and sharp. you might like ruthie ? ruth could also be a good choice for a middle, if you love the meaning/biblical connection a bit more than the sound
  • sarah - i like the sound but she feels a bit dated and plain to me. another ‘mum name’ in my area

I feel the same about [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], such a great inspiration/example but the sound of the name is not my favorite. Maybe [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] nn Ru/Rue/Roo?

I also like [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] “noble strength, compassionate friend” (feels like a deeper connection to Ruth’s story because of how she helped give [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] strength/hope as her friend while she wrestled through such a bitter season in her life.)

[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] is so pretty to me as well (“light, my father is joyful” reminds me of how [name_m]Jesus[/name_m] said “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”) This is what Abogail did in using wisdom, prudence and in the reverence of the Lord—she dealt righteously and her “light shown before men” and ultimately she was rewarded for that and [name_m]God[/name_m] is ever glorified through her story!

[name_f]Julia[/name_f] is also very pretty sounding to me, though I always questioned the sky father meaning. Obviously as a [name_u]Christian[/name_u], to me it symbolizes Yahweh and reminds me of [name_m]Christ[/name_m] seated at the right hand of the Father, but I don’t think those were the origins of the name. “Youthful” is a lovely meaning that calls to mind entering the kingdom in child-like faith & being born again. [name_f]Julia[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Julia[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Julia[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] are all pretty together and all have great meaning together, in my opinion

All very classic and beautiful names! [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Julia[/name_f], and [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]. They feel classic without feeling too overdone or too popular.

[name_f]Audrey[/name_f] is warm, stylish and charming - not loving Auddie, but I wouldn’t naturally nickname [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] anyway. You could do [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_f]Audra[/name_f] or [name_f]Aura[/name_f]?

[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is bright, lovely, literary and strong! It reminds me of [name_f]Villette[/name_f] by [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] and I love the meaning

[name_f]Julia[/name_f] is okay - I do get a different vibe from it - a tad dated, but still sort of elegant and bright. It reminds me of 1984

[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] - sharp, strong and concise. I do find it a tad harsh, but [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] and [name_u]Rue[/name_u] are cute!

[name_f]Sarah[/name_f] - it’s okay, nice enough, classic and solid. I prefer the variants though (Sarai, [name_f]Zara[/name_f], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], Zadie)

[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] - solid and classic and versatile. I think most people would go to Abby/Abbie/Abi over [name_f]Gail[/name_f]. You could do [name_u]Allie[/name_u], [name_u]Billie[/name_u] or [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] too :person_shrugging:

Over all, I like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] best

[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is my favorite. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is bouncy and fun, I love it! [name_f]My[/name_f] second favorite is [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] but only if you use [name_u]Abby[/name_u] as a nickname, I’m really not a fan of the nickname [name_f]Gail[/name_f], as it is very dated. [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] would be my least favorite. It seems very dated and bland to me, I know it’s a classic bible name but I’ve just never been a fan. There are many other bible names that appeal to me more than [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], sorry.

[name_f]Audrey[/name_f] - of all your favorites, this is mine! [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] is on my own short list. In a way it seems like a vintage, fully-feminine form of my own name… and I very rarely get a nn. I don’t think [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] needs one, and Auddie takes just as long to say as [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] does? I have heard of [name_f]Audra[/name_f] as a nn if you really want one, though, or I think you could even reach for [name_f]Addy[/name_f] or [name_f]Ria[/name_f].

[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] - I want to like this, I love the meaning of “light”, but I just can’t get into [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] and [name_u]Lux[/name_u] way more personally. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_u]Steele[/name_u] would be enough to put me off of [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], lol, but I do think [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is sweet.

[name_f]Julia[/name_f] - Which [name_f]Julia[/name_f] in the Bible are you thinking of? I think of Junia(s), Paul’s cousin… but I can’t think of a [name_f]Julia[/name_f] that’s actually in the Bible? … oh, apparently there is a minor one mentioned in Romans. I do think [name_f]Julia[/name_f] is a beautiful name, but my first thought isn’t the Bible. She may be my second favorite of your options. [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] seems to be all the craze lately, and I am growing to love her, but I love the classic simplicity of [name_f]Julia[/name_f].

[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] - ahh I am super biased on this one. [name_f]My[/name_f] grandmother was a [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], so I am super biased in her favor. I don’t know that I’d want to use [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] as a first name, but I love her as a middle! I’ve had a thing for [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] for years now. Probably tied for my second favorite with [name_f]Julia[/name_f].

[name_f]Sarah[/name_f] - beautiful meaning and a timeless name - for a few years I was a big [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] fan, but I’ve sort of backed off of it. There’s other Bible names I like more. Unfortunately my strongest memories with the Bible stories tied to [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] are all negative - giving [name_f]Hagar[/name_f] to [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] in her stead to give him an heir, making [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] send [name_f]Hagar[/name_f] & [name_m]Ishmael[/name_m] away then, and then laughing/scoffing in her tent when the [name_m]Lord[/name_m] came to tell [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] in a year they would have their own son. These are all easily explained by the human condition and I can’t fault her for them… but it does make it hard to see her redeeming qualities when the Bible isn’t as obvious about them as say [name_u]Daniel[/name_u], or even a character portrayed with both good and bad, like her husband [name_m]Abraham[/name_m]. :woman_shrugging: Still, it is a sweet name and I feel like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] is refreshing these days than our generation where there were so many of them.

[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] - [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] is sweet! I don’t think you’d have to worry about Gail; I think [name_u]Abby[/name_u] is sort of the default nn (which I happen not to be the fondest of, but if you like it, even better?). I also think [name_f]Bea[/name_f], [name_f]Ally[/name_f], [name_f]Ailey[/name_f] (AY-lee), and [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] could be sweet nns for [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], too. [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] was my first favorite girls’ name, I’ll always have a soft spot for her, but I don’t know that I would name my daughter [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] anymore. There are a few combos I have in reserve (Abigail [name_f]Leona[/name_f], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Mercy[/name_f], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] Clementine) if I ever change my mind and fall head over heels in love with her again, though!

I would vote [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], with Julia/Ruth as seconds! I think I like [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] in general more than [name_f]Julia[/name_f] these days, but don’t think I’d use [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] as a first name.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourites are [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] and [name_f]Julia[/name_f]. I would use [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] straight up as I really don’t think Auddie as a nickname is intuitive at all.

I always thought [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] was a nicknameless name.

I quite like [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] but with the way I speak TH and F sound the same so [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] would sound like roof. I don’t think it sounds harsh and [name_u]Rue[/name_u] and [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] are adorable.

I always thought [name_f]Gail[/name_f] was a standalone and [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] was Abigails nn.

I used to love [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] but i’m leaning towards [name_f]Sarai[/name_f] more.
