Really weird "similar" name suggestions that aren't similar in any way?

So I was using the “20 Names Similar To _______” a lot for a CAF I was making over in Baby Name Games, but then I realized that the suggested names for some of these names are really unusual non-similar choices, and I was wondering if this is a glitch.

Examples:
Susie (similar names include Baileigh, Gilliana, D’arcy, and Alyiona)
Ayden (similar names include Ged, Pavlina, Lois, and Inari)
Rodney (similar names include Caelus, Zakai, Jovanni, and Fernando)

Has anyone else noticed this?

I’ve noticed this and it annoys the living crap out of me how is [name_m]Binyamin[/name_m] even CLOSE to [name_f]Susie[/name_f]

I don’t know if this is just a problem on my end but when I search any name, a bunch of the suggestions are super weird- for example, some of the suggestions for [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] were [name_f]Seher[/name_f], Dughall, [name_f]Francisqui[/name_f], [name_f]Tawana[/name_f], [name_f]Jennine[/name_f], [name_f]Shandra[/name_f] and for [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] there was [name_f]Yakira[/name_f], [name_m]Gilleabart[/name_m], [name_m]Pates[/name_m], [name_m]Juan[/name_m] manuel, [name_f]Witten[/name_f], etc.! :grimacing:

I’ve started to assume they are names with similar meanings

I don’t think so though since the names [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] don’t have straight meanings (Eleanor most likely means the other [name_f]Aenor[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] has multiple theories about its roots) and when I looked up some of these suggestions, they didn’t have meanings connected in really any way with the names- [name_f]Yakira[/name_f] means “precious” in Hebrew, [name_f]Seher[/name_f] means “dawn” in Arabic, and [name_f]Witten[/name_f] comes from the Germanic root “wood/forest”

I figured it’s based on what names get mentioned together often. If for example [name_f]Seher[/name_f] was only posted about twice and both posts also contained [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f] – or were made by an [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] – then that’s a 100% connection from [name_f]Seher[/name_f] to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], which automatically means [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is connected to [name_f]Seher[/name_f] as well.
[name_f][/name_f]Several years ago I noticed that [name_m]Quentin[/name_m] was listed as similar to [name_m]Tarantino[/name_m] (which doesn’t seem to be the case any more), but that’s where I got the idea. And then recently I noticed that my own name is listed as similar to my favourite name, which I can only assume I caused myself by posting about it.

It might also be that users who have ‘liked’ that name have also liked the others that come up? [name_f]Or[/name_f] that they’ve been featured on similar lists/blog posts?

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Or[/name_f], as @Wandarine[name_f][/name_f] suggests, they’ve been mentioned together. If they’re being mentioned together in CAF / create a school class type games, that might explain why some odd ones are being connected too?

I will keep an eye on it and see if it needs reporting to the tech side of NB

I was about to come on and note the same thing!

I know that with less common names, the similar names are often more ‘random’ since they don’t come up as often. But the similar names have completely changed for me on more common names – [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] used to suggest other popular names and/or [name_f]Berry[/name_f] favorites like [name_m]Miles[/name_m], [name_m]Liam[/name_m], [name_m]Noah[/name_m], etc, but now it looks like this:

For another example, [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] still has some of the ones that used to be there (Ethan, [name_m]Nathan[/name_m], [name_m]Zachary[/name_m], etc) but then a whole bunch that certainly weren’t there before about a day or two ago:

I really can’t imagine these are names mentioned frequently or the most liked alongside [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]? I tried searching some of them together on the forums and main website, and no results came up at all with them together.
