Replacing Isobel

(Sorry, this is going to be long! I’ve been working on it for the past week.)

My husband and I are expecting our fourth (and most likely last) child in late [name_f]September[/name_f]. Obviously we don’t know the sex yet, but I thought we had already decided on a girl’s name: [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f], which has been on our list for a long time. Well, it turns out DH is no longer 100% on board with [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] because a coworker of his is expecting a baby girl in [name_f]April[/name_f] and has already announced that her name will be [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] [name_f]Guadalupe[/name_f]. (Fabulous combo, right?) He doesn’t want to look like we’re copying her, and I have to admit that [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] lost a little bit of luster for me, too, when I heard the news. We’re not completely ruling [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] out at this point, but we have agreed to at least look at other options. (Yay, more naming talk!)

[name_m]Even[/name_m] if [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] is out, I would at least like to salvage [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] if we can. The problem is, the majority of my favorite names are loooooong. I’m not opposed to long combos at all, especially with our short one-syllable surname, but with a five-syllable, ten-letter middle name, even I’m hesitant to go too long with the first name. Otherwise, we’d probably just go with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] and be done with it. (That’s too long, right? But ten syllables altogether doesn’t seem that bad…) Well, anyway, here’s a list of what we’ve come up with so far:

[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is one of DH’s favorite names. I prefer [name_f]Maria[/name_f] myself, but agree that [name_f]Mary[/name_f] sounds better with [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]. Still, I get hung up on the fact that [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is so short next to our other kids’ formal names. Then again, stylewise, she fits in perfectly well with the sibset, and the others have four-letter long nicknames, so… I don’t know.

[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - Pretty much the same issues that I have with [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. If I liked [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], that would be perfect, but I just don’t.

[name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - Ditto. Too bad [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] is too similar to [name_m]William[/name_m].

[name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - Ditto.

[name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - Hmm, maybe? Somehow five letters seems so much longer than four, but I don’t love [name_f]Grace[/name_f] with our surname. Hubby has really fallen for [name_f]Grace[/name_f], though. If he had full naming rights, he’d probably name her [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]! (Which actually isn’t a bad double-barreled name… [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]? Eh, probably too much.)

[name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - Visual length is great, even though it’s one syllable, but again, not great with the last name. Plus, we would prefer our children to have unique initials, although we could break that rule for the perfect name.

[name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - [name_m]Way[/name_m] back when I was pregnant with [name_m]William[/name_m] and we first started talking names, we liked the idea of naming a future daughter [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but that didn’t work with [name_f]Theophania[/name_f], which led us to an [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] variation – [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]. Thus, it seems rather fitting that if we end up replacing [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] that we go with another [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] name. We’re just not that in love with [name_f]Elise[/name_f].

[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - My attempt to make [name_f]Mary[/name_f] longer…maybe too long? (Yes, I know I’m being picky!) I don’t mind three syllables, but eight letters is a bit much. I could maybe overlook that if I absolutely loved [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], but I just like her.

[name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - Again, too short, and I don’t like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] paired with the surname.

[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - This could work. I like it a lot.

[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - Another potential contender!

[name_u]Simone[/name_u] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - I like this one, too, but no real nicknames, which is a minus.

[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - Ditto. I guess Syl could work as a nickname, but I don’t love it.

[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - Another possible contender, but my husband prefers the [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] spelling and I really…don’t. I got him on board with [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] over [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], though, so maybe I can sway him to [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f].

[name_f]Naomi[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - I really like [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], but not really loving her with our other kids’ names.

[name_f]Bridget[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - Same thing as [name_f]Naomi[/name_f].

[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - This one is a definite possibility! I’m theoretically put off by the fact that [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] ends with a -t and [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] begins with one, but they make such different sounds that it doesn’t bother me that much. I’m also worried about the fact that we’ve already used [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] as [name_f]Cate[/name_f]'s middle name. [name_f]May[/name_f] be too many Shakespearean tragic heroine names in one sibset?

[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - I know, NINE letters. Yet, only three syllables, and I’ve really been crushing on [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] lately. (Plus, cute nicknames!) I may just love [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] enough to ignore the length.

[name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] is actually a pretty great replacement for [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]. It’s even Scottish like [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], which is cool because part of the reason we liked the [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] spelling is because it would honor my Scottish roots. I do kinda prefer the [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] spelling, but I have no problem going with the shorter [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] in this case.

So, basically we’re looking for a two or three syllable classic name that is between 5-7 letters in length (although we might be flexible with a name we love). Thoughts on our list so far? Any favorites? [name_m]New[/name_m] suggestions? Should I just give up on the idea of using [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] altogether and start over fresh? I don’t know…

I love [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]! It’s absolutely beautiful. I also adore [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] as well, and I don’t believe it would be too Shakespearian at all.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about…
[name_f]Estella[/name_f]
[name_f]Briony[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_u]Dana[/name_u]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Helen[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

I would go with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]. It gives you an [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] derivative, it’s Scottish-ish. It’s not too long, and you can even have a 4 letter nickname “[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]” if you wanted, which would definitely match with [name_m]Liam[/name_m], [name_f]Cate[/name_f], and [name_f]Vera[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]. I don’t think it sounds too long at all, and it would easily fall in line with your other kids’ names, short nickname potential included (I love the thought of nn [name_u]Pen[/name_u] short for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]) Obviously, the cliche advice to just do what you love probably sounds easier said than done in this case, but you still have plenty of time to play around with combos until [name_f]September[/name_f]. Congratulations, by the way!

Here are some other names similar to the ones on your list:

[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Arabelle[/name_f]/(a)
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Bella[/name_f]
[name_f]Magdalene[/name_f]/(a)

I absolutely adore [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]. It’s so charming and elegant, it would be a lovely name to carry.

suggestions:
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Velvet[/name_f]
[name_f]Adeline[/name_f]
Isora
[name_f]Enid[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Mavis[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]
[name_f]Irene[/name_f]
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]

@hannahcarmeen: I’m glad you like [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. Those are probably the front-runners for me at the moment, along with [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]. Thank you for the suggestions. I actually love [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], but dislike the repeating “ph” with [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]. [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] and [name_f]Odette[/name_f]… I like those names, but I have a feeling my husband will think they’re too “out there” for a first name. (I can talk him into a bold middle name, but he definitely prefers a familiar first.) I’ll ask him about them, though.

@medfordkung - I’m not really a fan of [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]/[name_f]Elsie[/name_f], but thank you for the suggestion!

@sansavesper - Thanks! I like most of those names, but I would rather avoid an -a ending name with [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]. I’m glad you don’t think Penelope Theophania is too long, though! I’m still on the fence.

Anyone else?

My favorites from your list with your sibset and mn are [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], but I really think [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] could be a good alternative to [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]. While I like [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], it doesn’t see as classic as your other children’s names. Instead of [name_f]Mary[/name_f], what about [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f], [name_u]Marion[/name_u], or [name_f]Muriel[/name_f]? Any chance you’d use [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] as a first name? I like [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], or [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] [name_u]Felice[/name_u] as potential combos.

Some other possibilities:

[name_m]William[/name_m]/[name_m]Liam[/name_m], [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Cate[/name_f], [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]/[name_f]Vera[/name_f], and

[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Annelise[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Constance[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_u]Damaris[/name_u] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Denise[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_u]Felice[/name_u] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Joanne[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Louise[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Melanie[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Phyllis[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] best of your list! You could even go with [name_f]Annabeth[/name_f] if you wanted to keep the [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] element? I like [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] best though

@davisellu: Ooo, [name_f]Annelise[/name_f], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], and [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] are excellent suggestions! I think those will go on the list. [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] would also be a good fit if it wasn’t already the name of one of our nieces. I love [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], but as with [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], I just don’t like the repeating “ph”. As for [name_f]Theodora[/name_f], it’s a name I like, but don’t love. If we do decide to give up on [name_f]Theophania[/name_f], we’ll probably either go back to [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or go with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] for the first name. Thank you for the suggestions!

@cmariac: [name_f]Annabeth[/name_f] is another good one, but I think I like [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] better, too. Thanks!

I’m a big fan of [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] from your list. I also adore both [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], and I don’t think the length is too much with such a short surname.

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Liam[/name_m], [name_f]Cate[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f] & [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]/[name_u]Penny[/name_u]/[name_f]Evie[/name_f].

I really, really adore your [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]. I kinda hope you still can use it, but anyway, my new favourites from your list are [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Naomi[/name_f]. If I have to pick one I’ll go with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f].

Suggestions :
[name_f]Zoe[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - I remember you love [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] and plan to use it as a nickname for [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]. Now you doubt [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], can [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] just be the full name?
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Giselle[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Lisbeth[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - another (underused) variant of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
[name_u]Marian[/name_u] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Liesl[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Selene[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Zelie[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Helen[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
Félicie [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] - unless this is too much for you after [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f].

i personally love [name_u]Simone[/name_u] and [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]

but some gorgeous other names with your preferred lettering are…
[name_f]Sephora[/name_f]
[name_f]Arianna[/name_f]
[name_f]Breanna[/name_f]

just some i thought sounded pretty good with [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] espically [name_f]Arianna[/name_f] but as of above i do also love [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] and [name_u]Simone[/name_u]

hope all goes well with the [name_u]Baby[/name_u]!

I’m sorry that your favourite name has been chosen by a coworker. For what it’s worth, I think you can definitely still use it since [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] (well, its variant spellings) is hardly an unusual name, but it sounds like you’re open to that and are just looking for other ideas. As you say, yay for more naming talk!

[name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] does seem like the obvious replacement. I think [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] is beautiful - pretty and youthful, but also substantial. It has the same feel and rhythm as [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] and is a touch more unusual to boot. If you’re not 100% sold on it, some other pretty -bel options to consider: [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f], Rosabel, [name_f]Clarabel[/name_f], [name_f]Amabel[/name_f]… even vintage-chic [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]. There are some other more unusual ones too but if your husband prefers a familiar first, I think these all feel familiar and recognisable without actually being popular.

[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] is lovely, and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is a solid classic like [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] that I think defies its short visual length. However, if you do feel that it’s too short, how about using [name_f]Mary[/name_f] as a nickname for something longer? [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mary[/name_f] would be beautiful, or [name_f]Margot[/name_f] or [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] or [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] a lot too with your other kids’ names for all the same reasons, but it’s tricky to find a longer form which doesn’t end in -a if you don’t like [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]. [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f], maybe?

I really like [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]! I think it flows beautifully and I love bouncy, funky [name_f]Esme[/name_f] paired with the long and romantic [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]. I think Sylvie, [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] flow really nicely too, and I love [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]! It is quite a mouthful with the middle name too, but I think you might be able to get away with it since you have such a short surname. Ditto [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], if that’s the name your really love. [name_m]How[/name_m] often would you be saying “[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]” in full, anyway?

I think the single-syllable names on your list, lovely though they are, are probably a bit too short for your surname. Obviously, I don’t know what your surname is so it may work, but your other children have long first names and I suspect a single-syllable name might sound a bit abrupt in comparison.

Other suggestions:

[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]
[name_f]Adele[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Marielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Romilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Bethany[/name_f]
[name_f]Jessamy[/name_f]

@acoker and @zara roberts - Thank you!

@luneth - Oh, I wish [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] could be the first name! (For my favorite name ever, I wouldn’t even care if it was only three letters long and not exactly the best fit with the sibset.) That was seriously my first suggestion when we decided to look at other names, but DH shot me down immediately. [name_u]Boo[/name_u]! As for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], I love the name and don’t necessarily mind the royal family connection, but my name is actually [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and they rhyme. I do like [name_f]Giselle[/name_f], [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], and [name_u]Marian[/name_u] from your other suggestions and will put them on the list. Thanks! ([name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is actually one of DH’s favorites and would be great, but I think she’s too visually similar to [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]: begins with a “C” and ends with -ine.)

@katinka - Yes, we’re definitely still open to [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]. Who knows, maybe the coworker will even change her mind when she actually meets her daughter? It’s funny that you would suggest [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] because like I said, my name is actually [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]! [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f]… I always think she looks so pretty, but when I say her aloud, she sounds weird. That does remind me, though, that the [name_m]French[/name_m] spelling of [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is [name_f]Lucie[/name_f], which would get me five letters. Oh, and there’s [name_f]Marie[/name_f] for [name_f]Mary[/name_f], too! [name_m]French[/name_m] names work really well with [name_f]Theophania[/name_f], I think.

I do like using my kids’ full names whenever they’re in trouble, but point taken. I’m really starting to like the sound of [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f]!

I actually [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Theophania[/name_f], but stupid DH vetoed it because he says [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is too similar to our niece [name_f]Elena[/name_f]'s name. Bah! And [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] is out because it’s my sister’s favorite girl name and she has such few favorites. [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], and [name_f]Adele[/name_f] will go on the list, though. Thanks!

Well i think [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is such an adorable name. Have you thought of [name_f]Grace[/name_f] nn [name_f]Gigi[/name_f]?
My second fave is [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]. I also prefer the [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] spelling, but i knew a baby named [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], and it seemed adorable on her.

Going back to [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]… so you liked the [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] derivative, right? Maybe one of these will be it.
[name_f]Beth[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Elle[/name_f]
Or you could name her [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]- it’s not that much longer than [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], after all, and find a cute nickname!
Also- [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] might work, especially if you called her [name_f]Zanna[/name_f]. But I think you should go with a name you love, and most of those sound fine with [name_f]Theophania[/name_f] to me. Best of luck!

Out of your list I actually love the full name [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] with a nickname just like your other 4 children. I also love [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] as well. They’re all gorgeous combinations.
