I love the nicknames [name_u]Rue[/name_u], Ruey and [name_m]Ben[/name_m]. But, I know some people won’t be able to shake the sandwich association.
Would spelling the name the traditional Hebrew way, [name_m]Reuven[/name_m], make it more useable? I’d lose the nickname [name_m]Ben[/name_m], but [name_u]Rue[/name_u] is my favorite anyway.
Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions! I’m in a desperate search for Hebrew names that aren’t too popular, [name_m]Levi[/name_m], [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Aaron[/name_m], and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] are all in the top 100, or they would be my top picks.
I don’t think the sandwich association is too strong! It is recognizably a first name and I think it would look quite classic and cute (and in style) on a young boy. I think [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is just fine, as is Rueven - although it might have its own issues.
I think I’m probably in the minority but all I can think of is the sandwhich when I hear the name [name_m]Rueben[/name_m]. Changing the spelling wouldn’t help. I’m sure you have considered many names out of the top 100, but some that come to mind are [name_m]Eben[/name_m], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], [name_u]Tobin[/name_u], [name_m]Simeon[/name_m], [name_u]Micah[/name_u], [name_m]Solomon[/name_m], [name_m]Jonah[/name_m], [name_m]Oren[/name_m], [name_m]Abram[/name_m], [name_m]Samson[/name_m], [name_u]Elias[/name_u], [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], [name_m]Judah[/name_m]. Good luck!
I recognize [name_m]Rueben[/name_m] as a known first name and the sandwich wouldn’t come to mind. If you choose [name_m]Rueben[/name_m] for your son’s name I think family and friends will think of him first when they hear the name so I wouldn’t worry about the sandwich association. I would stay with that spelling.
I’m with @foreverharriet - never understood the ‘sandwich reference’ everyone’s on about. What is a reuben sandwich? Perhaps it’s a [name_u]North[/name_u] American thing? Never heard of it outside of nameberry. [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is a great name. I have a bunch of Hebrew boys names on my list though - try [name_m]Abner[/name_m], [name_m]Caleb[/name_m], [name_m]David[/name_m], [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m], [name_m]Jairus[/name_m], [name_m]Jedidiah[/name_m], [name_m]Jonah[/name_m], [name_m]Malachi[/name_m], [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], [name_m]Moses[/name_m]. Some are definitely more popular than others!
I have the same problem with this name! I think it’s been used enough (although definitely not too popular, just like you said) as a name that wouldn’t be an issue. The rueben isn’t an overly popular sandwich, anyways (at least not here in the Midwest).
