Rhyming first and last - so bad, right?

Please, Nameberry, help this mama out! Our little girl is due in 8 weeks…

My husband and I have the HARDEST time deciding on names. Now we think we have it down to:
[name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] Grow <------ Grow is our last name.

We both love the name Marlowe. Like, crazy for it. It’s hip, it’s unique, it has a literary punch, and tons of cool NN possibilities. But I am having second (third, fourth, fifth) thoughts because the first and last names rhyme.
Sometimes I think, who cares, but it just isn’t sitting right with me.
Some people I have asked says it sounds like an actress or author name, others say it’s no big deal, while others are delicately trying to steer me away.

The middle name will be a family name - not relevant for this discussion, but FWIW we have one other kiddo, named Thurston.

Please give me your honest opinion - are the names too rhymey?
If you aren’t crazy for the name Marlowe, just imagine it is another “oh” ending name like Shiloh, Harlow, etc.

THANK YOU!

I personally wouldn’t use it, but if you would regret giving your daughter a name that you like less than [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], then I don’t think it’s the end of the world to have a rhyming name. I knew a girl with a first and last name ending in -elly growing up and though people giggle when they first hear it, it hasn’t been a huge problem in her life ever.

If the name [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] is the only one you and your husband love than I think you should use it.

If you love it, go for it. It’s not horrible, there are girls named Hashtag and La-a.

I wouldn’t, personally.

Could you use another name inspired by [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]? Maybe [name_u]Kit[/name_u] or [name_f]Marla[/name_f]?

I have a ton of names that I like - the problem is they keep getting the veto from the hubs.
Names I like (as an alternative to [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u])
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_u]Simone[/name_u], [name_f]Camille[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Mimi[/name_f]), [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Lucy[/name_f])
Ack. Why are husbands so difficult?!?!

My cousin is named [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] ad her last name rhymes with her first name. I don’t know if she hates it or not because she’s a toddler. But every time I hear her name I say that, although lovely, it annoys me that her name rhymes. If you really love [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] and can’t imagine any other name, use it. But it would bother me if my name rhymed.

The first thing I thought of was the time long ago when I was learning to read and there was a book that had the phrase “see [name_m]Jack[/name_m] jump”. In this case, it was “see [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] grow”. I would avoid any name with a prominant “O” sound in it. My advice would be to keep looking.

[name_f]Imagine[/name_f] this was your second daughter and your first was named [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] what would that name be? Then use the name for the second daughter, in other words avoid any names ending in O.

I wouldn’t use it either, sorry. Maybe as a middle name?

Especially if you are going to use a nickname, I think it’s ok if it’s THE name for you otherwise. If you had something you liked equally as well, I’d say go with that, but if not…I think the first name is more important than the combination/flow/etc.

I actually think some rhyming names are cute. [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] Grow isn’t the most ideal because Grow is a verb and also has a very similar letter combination as the first name. I think if it were something like [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] [name_u]Poe[/name_u] or something it would be slightly less of an issue.

Thanks everyone! You really are confirming my gut feeling that the combo is just. not. right.
Back to the drawing board.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about name her [name_f]Marlaina[/name_f] Grow, nn [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]?

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Marley[/name_u] Grow? That’s a cute name.

I like [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] just fine, but [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] Grow comes across as quite joke-ey (also, [name_m]Thurston[/name_m] and [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] feel so different!). I think [name_m]Thurston[/name_m] and [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f] or [name_m]Thurston[/name_m] and [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] would be fab together.

[name_f]Azalea[/name_f]? I feel like I have no constructive suggestions to offer here, hahaha. For some reason [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] popped into my mind, and I think [name_m]Thurston[/name_m] and [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] would be great together (plus, I think [name_m]Zaley[/name_m]/[name_f]Zelie[/name_f], [name_f]Lea[/name_f], and [name_f]Lela[/name_f] are adorable nns).

Good luck!
