We are a Japanese Brazilian couple expecting our first child and we’ve narrowed it down to Rina or Runa. They both work in Japanese and Portugese, which was important to us. Husband is leaning towards Rina and I am leaning towards Runa (feels less common but not too “unique”). Help us break the tie. Thank you for any feedback!

Seconding Greyblue, I adore [name_f]Runa[/name_f]! It has a mystical quality to it 
[name_f]Rina[/name_f] is also very lovely and usable, though tbh to me it’s always sounded like a nickname to a longer name (like [name_f]Carina[/name_f], [name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_f]Serena[/name_f], or Sabrina).

rina is the familiar one for sure, runa is borderline awkward in portuguese, but as you said it’s that less common but not out of this world name.
while very similar, they have completely different vibes to me. rina sounds more serious, similar to familiar classics. runa sounds like a newer adventurous name, tied to the word/name rune.

I don’t know anything about the cultures or languages in play here so, based on sound alone, I prefer [name_f]Runa[/name_f].

I prefer the mystical ethereal sound of [name_f]Runa[/name_f] 
I would echo this as well. Rina is pretty but feels perhaps a little insubstantial compared to the magical, mystical Runa.

[name_f]My[/name_f] vote goes to [name_f]Runa[/name_f]. [name_f]Rina[/name_f] seems nicknamey / incomplete and [name_f]Runa[/name_f] is a whole name and has more spark in my opinion.
I prefer [name_f]Runa[/name_f] – it sounds magical and unique without being hard to pronounce or weird-sounding. Both are great though! 
Going against the grain here — I much prefer [name_f]Rina[/name_f]. It has a softer, brighter feel to me, and that’s just the way I tend to lean.
I would go with [name_f]Runa[/name_f], it has a more intuitive pronunciation where as [name_f]Rina[/name_f] I would question if it wss ree-na or Rye-na
[name_f]Rina[/name_f] is one of my favorite names. I love how gentle and lilting it sounds.
I’m a big fan of the singer [name_f]Rina[/name_f] Sawayama so [name_f]Rina[/name_f] has my heart. But [name_f]Runa[/name_f] is lovely too!
I prefer [name_f]Rina[/name_f] myself—this is mainly due to a linguistic quirk because [name_f]Runa[/name_f] sounds like “ruin a…” in my accent, otherwise it’s a fine name.
[name_f]Rina[/name_f] sounds like a complete name to me, not a nickname. I know a [name_f]Rina[/name_f] who rose to the top of a male-dominated competitive industry, so I have no trouble seeing this name as “serious,” though it also sounds light and pretty to me!
I’d go with [name_f]Runa[/name_f]. [name_f]Runa[/name_f] feels more complete and has more spark. But [name_f]Rina[/name_f] is a beautiful name too, and you really can’t go wrong.
[name_f]Rina[/name_f] feels more like a tail end of [name_f]Marina[/name_f] or [name_f]Katerina[/name_f] (two beautiful names btw!) so I would personally use it as a nickname. I think [name_f]Runa[/name_f] is better as a standalone name, it feels really strong & magical✨
