Oh my goodness, I used to be obsessed with this name when I was like 12! I can’t believe I forgot about it!
To answer your questions, I think it’s totally usable, and the connection is apparent. I love the sound and I love the name!
Hey! It is a cool name! I love the name Parissa ([name]Par[/name]-rhys-aa)… For the same reason. We too have riess in the family!
This is a really beautiful, elegant name. Go for it!
I’ve always loved that book. (by Schusterman, right?) But for [name]Risa[/name], if you’re worried about the name’s ethnicity, I once had a class with a lady named [name]Elisabeth[/name], and she always went by [name]Risa[/name]. Personally, I love the name.
I like [name]Riess[/name]. [name]Risa[/name] is also good, but what about [name]Clarissa[/name] nn [name]Risa[/name]?

[name]How[/name] about Riessa? The connection to [name]Riess[/name] would be obvious, for one, and the spelling would be unusual, but unique and cool.
Could also do [name]Terese[/name] or [name]Teresa[/name] nn [name]Risa[/name] But I like it as a fn, and would preserve the meaning more.
@ juma1234: That would be nice, but I’m worried about people spelling and pronouncing it wrong.
I really like [name]Risa[/name], and I think it would honor a [name]Riess[/name] admirably.
As far as the rest of your favorites go, [name]Risa[/name] does stand out a little, particularly with most of your other girl names, but not to an extent that makes it unusable with the others (with the exception of [name]Reed[/name], [name]Rose[/name], and Rieger, which would be too similar). I believe personal and family meaning trumps sibset matchiness any day, so I say use it and don’t worry.
I like it. I don’t think of it as particularly Hispanic or Japanese, actually, the only [name]Risa[/name] I’ve ever known was Jewish, so I think it works across many cultures.
It’s unique, energetic, but still feels classic to me (probably because it’s not so far from [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Lisa[/name], etc…), I think it will age nicely and I love all the family connections. Go for it!
