Hello Nameberry community! My wife and I have a bit of a naming conundrum we are working though and would love your help! We are having a baby boy in [name_u]December[/name_u] and we love the name [name_u]Carter[/name_u]. However, our last name is [name_f]Bee[/name_f], so his name would be [name_u]Carter[/name_u] [name_f]Bee[/name_f]. Our worry is that it would be associated with the stripper-turned-rapper, Cardi B. Who knows if she’ll still be relevant in a few years, but she has top 10 songs and albums now and could possibly be around for a while, there’s no way to really know.
As a backup, the other name we like is [name_u]Tyler[/name_u]. We are also open to other suggestions of names with hard consonant sound as well.
Question is, are we worried over nothing and should just go with [name_u]Carter[/name_u]? Thanks for you input!
I don’t think the connection will be a big deal, especially considering she might not even be relevant 10-20 years down the road when he is in middle/high school. I love the name [name_u]Carter[/name_u], much more than [name_u]Tyler[/name_u]. I would stick with it since you both love it! But just in case you decide to go with something else:
Eeek, I have to say, I think it is too close. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if she is not relevant in a few years, she’s big right now, during your baby’s birth year. She’s also made some music history as the first female rapper with two #1 hits.
I really like the suggestion of [name_m]Tucker[/name_m] as a middle ground between [name_u]Carter[/name_u] and [name_u]Tyler[/name_u]. Or switch [name_u]Carter[/name_u] just slightly to [name_u]Carson[/name_u].
I mean I didn’t make the connection at all, but then I’ve barely heard of Cardi-B (I mean, I just looked her up and realised that some of her songs I hear on the radio a lot, but I didn’t even know they were hers, so…) I guess it depends where you are and how many around you are big rap fans. I also imagine in a few years, the association will have faded significantly, too. Finally, I don’t think it’s a negative thing either - if someone, makes the connection, cool, understand the association, brush it off and move on. I mean, I was [name_f]Zena[/name_f] when [name_f]Xena[/name_f]: Warrior [name_f]Princess[/name_f] was popular…I survived, and love my name today.
[name_u]Carter[/name_u] [name_f]Bee[/name_f] is nice. I wouldn’t let the association ruin a name you love.
i wouldn’t use it. For the same reason [name_f]Kylie[/name_f] Jenner named her baby Stormi. It is forever associated with [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] [name_m]Daniels[/name_m]…but maybe she wanted to make that connection, who knows…
I think Cardi B is going to be less relevant once [name_u]Carter[/name_u] is old enough to care, though I’m sure some people will comment on the connection between the two names. I love the suggestion of [name_m]Tucker[/name_m]!
I didn’t make the connection til you pointed it out. I thought you were going to say it was reminiscent of [name_f]Beyonce[/name_f] and [name_u]Jay[/name_u] Z. lol
I think it’s a perfectly acceptable name and I don’t think Cardi B is someone who will leave a lasting expression for a very long time or anything. It seems pretty safe. It’s not like using a name like [name_u]Lennon[/name_u], [name_u]Jagger[/name_u], etc. which people will always recognize lol
Although the it does sound very similar to Cardi B I do not think many people will make the connection unless it is pointed out. I honestly didn’t even realise until you mentioned it (and that’s saying something as I am a 17 year old girl who has most definitely heard of Cardi B multiple times).
I think [name_u]Carter[/name_u] [name_f]Bee[/name_f] is a beautiful name!
I noticed it immediately, I’m afraid, but I don’t think it matters that much. If in ten years she isn’t relevant anymore, and you gave up [name_u]Carter[/name_u] because of her, would you regret it? I think that’s the question to ask yourself.
Not a connection I’m aware of, but I’m not in the US. Like the suggestion of [name_m]Tucker[/name_m]. What about [name_m]Granger[/name_m] for an appealing and less used name of this style?
Sorry, Cardi B, but I thought about Bey (Knowles-) [name_u]Carter[/name_u] first. Outloud the name is ok, and it’s what really matters anyway. [name_m]Carsten[/name_m] is an option too. Good luck!
PS: who is [name_f]Stormy[/name_f] [name_m]Daniels[/name_m]? (now I know!) I have always associated “[name_f]Stormy[/name_f]” with the Winx character.
I love the name [name_u]Carter[/name_u]! Until you mentioned it, I didn’t think of Cardi B, but now that you’ve said it, it does sound very similar. I don’t listen to her music, and if you were having a girl named [name_u]Carter[/name_u] I think it might be a bit much, but on a boy the association is kind of washed out. He could always go by his first and middle, eg, [name_u]Carter[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u].
My favourite name for years turned out to be my SO’s surname so I don’t really get to use it, so I know what it’s like to lose a name to coincidence. If you love [name_u]Carter[/name_u], I’m sure it wouldn’t really be a problem, only brought up every now and again perhaps.
I didn’t notice it until you said it. Maybe say the name out loud to others and ask them if it sounds okay, without mentioning the connection just to see if anyone says it themselves.
I thought of Cardi B immediately when I said it out loud, I’m sorry. Depending on your accent, [name_u]Carter[/name_u] sounds more like Carder which makes it even more noticeable. She’s made the records with some of her songs, so I think she will be relevant for a while and she doesn’t have the best reputation this second as she is probably going to jail for her last assault charge. I like the suggestion of [name_m]Tucker[/name_m], and even [name_m]Tanner[/name_m]. [name_u]Carson[/name_u] [name_f]Bee[/name_f] also wouldn’t be a problem. Good luck!
OP here. Thanks for the thoughtful responses and ideas! We really appreciate it. After considering it some more, I think we are leaning away from [name_u]Carter[/name_u] as a name for the reasons mentioned. We’re a bit of music people and the name is just too close. Cardi B is super popular right now and has potential to be a name people will recognize for years to come (like [name_f]Missy[/name_f] [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] or [name_f]Lil[/name_f] [name_u]Kim[/name_u]). It’s just not the association we want to make and we don’t want to set him up to be teased for something we realized ahead of time.
With that, we are liking [name_u]Tyler[/name_u], [name_u]Dylan[/name_u], [name_u]Carson[/name_u] or [name_m]Braxton[/name_m] as our options right now! We weren’t really liking [name_m]Tucker[/name_m] enough, but it was a solid suggestion
