I’m really feeling drawn to Robin lately. It feels like a warm, gentle, vintage name to me. I makes me think of Christopher Robin. I love its meaning. And a more recent positive association is Robin from Stranger Things.
BUT, I really don’t like any of the nicknames associated with Robin like Rob, Robbie, Bob or Bobby. If I had a Robin I’d want to call him Robin. But I know that’s not how things always pan out in real life. Do you think one of these nicknames is likely inevitable for Robin?
I don’t think a nickname would be inevitable the way it would be for [name_u]Robert[/name_u]. I guess [name_m]Rob[/name_m] might feel natural at some point since it’s an easy abbreviation but the rest all feel more like [name_u]Robert[/name_u] nicknames to me.
I do think it’s inevitable that [name_u]Robin[/name_u] would at some point get the nickname Rob/Robbie as I’ve known and father and son jr with this name. The father went mostly by [name_u]Robin[/name_u] with the occasional Rob/Robbie and the son went most by [name_m]Rob[/name_m] but close family would call him [name_u]Robin[/name_u]
I don’t think Bob/Bobby would be the first nickname people would go to.
If you love it so much, you should use it and try to establish early on (with family at least) that you wish to call them by the full name.
[name_u]Or[/name_u] if I may suggestion of some other nicknames that might appeal more…
[name_f]Ro[/name_f]
RoRo
Roey
[name_f]Rin[/name_f]
[name_u]Ren[/name_u] (a bit of a stretch but I can still see this one working)
He might get [name_m]Rob[/name_m], if I’m honest, from people who like to nickname. [name_u]Bobby[/name_u] and [name_m]Bob[/name_m], less likely. For what it’s worth, my mum never liked [name_f]Gracie[/name_f] but called me [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and corrected people who attempted [name_f]Gracie[/name_f] i do think if he introduced himself as [name_u]Robin[/name_u], a lot of people would just call him that
I haven’t met many [name_m]Robins[/name_m] but the ones I have go by the full name. I think nicknames like [name_m]Bob[/name_m] and [name_u]Bobby[/name_u] are definitely avoidable; [name_m]Rob[/name_m] or [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] might be an occasional challenge as the sound is much more clearly there.
[name_f]My[/name_f] partner is a [name_u]Robin[/name_u] and he doesn’t get called anything other than [name_u]Robin[/name_u] if that helps. As far as I know, nobody he meets (new workmates etc) have ever tried to call him anything shorter either! He doesn’t like [name_m]Rob[/name_m] or Bob/Bobby or anything so he’d be quick to put them right if they did.
I have a 6 month old Robin that no one has tried to call by any of those nicknames yet - not even my mother-in-law who is a compulsive nicknamer (she’s calling him Ro Ro). I don’t think those nicknames are inevitable these days, especially Bob/Bobby, just like a James won’t always be a Jim or a William probably won’t get called Bill.
I’m not a huge fan of Rob/Robbie either and think it will be easy to correct people while he’s young. There is a chance he’ll decide to go by a nickname when he’s older though and I’m fine with that (I actually go by an intuitive nickname my mum doesn’t particularly like so I can empathise with both perspectives).
We’re so in love with his name (just last night my wife was saying how perfect Robin is for him and how happy she is we picked it!) so I’m absolutely endorsing Robin. I love the Christopher Robin connection too that gives it a storybook feel, as well as Robin Hood, and Batman & Robin is such a fun and sweetly retro connection too (my mum sometimes calls him the Boy Wonder). Robins also have some cool Celtic mythology surrounding them, like the new year triumphing over the old, so it felt absolutely perfect for our early January baby who was due at the end of December.
I agree that it has sweet, cozy vintage vibes, and the meaning is wonderful. I love that it’s also a gender neutral nature name, and a medieval nickname for Robert, as Robert is a family name for us. I just love everything about his name and could ramble on about it endlessly.
I don’t think those are really inevitable nicknames! I think the [name_u]Robin[/name_u] on Stranger Things (who I also totally adore—love the association these) gets called “Robin Bobbin” by [name_m]Steve[/name_m] mayyybe one time… so Bobbin pops to mind as a little nickname.
I imagine a grandparent, sibling, friend, or cousin, etc. might call [name_u]Robin[/name_u] by a nickname like [name_u]Robbie[/name_u], but I don’t think it’s inevitably what he’d go by. [name_u]Robin[/name_u], just [name_u]Robin[/name_u], would more than likely be the default and norm.
I don’t think [name_u]Robin[/name_u] has inevitable nicknames! You might get the occasional one, but most [name_m]Robins[/name_m] I’ve met just get the full name.
