Roma, anyone?

Still searching for a sister name for [name]Cecilia[/name]. WDYT of [name]Roma[/name]? I love the NN [name]Romy[/name] and my husband vetoed [name]Rosemary[/name]. Someone told me [name]Roma[/name] has a gypsy association. Does anyone know about this?

Also considering
[name]Estella[/name] (sounds too similar?)
[name]Caroline[/name] (Sharing the same first letter taboo?)

Thanks so much for the help!!

[name]Roma[/name] gypsies were the very first thing to come to mind when I saw [name]Roma[/name]. The association is definitely there for me. I don’t like [name]Estella[/name], I find it harsh, but I adore [name]Caroline[/name]. Very sweet and pretty, and classic. I think it matches [name]Cecilia[/name] really well and they don’t sound matchy to me

ETA: Would [name]Romilly[/name] interest you? I think its gorgeous and you could still get the nn [name]Romy[/name] from it.

Yes, [name]Roma[/name] links to Romani people as the term gypsy is considered derogatory.

Have you considered [name]Romany[/name] or [name]Romilly[/name] with the nn [name]Romy[/name]? I know two little girls named [name]Romany[/name] and I thin it’s lovely!

There’s also [name]Romola[/name], [name]Romina[/name], [name]Romilda[/name] and Romarin. [name]Rosamund[/name] and Rosamel could also work.
[name]Romola[/name] is my favourite  I also quite like [name]Romany[/name].

I don’t love [name]Roma[/name] as a full name, but I [name]DO[/name] love Rosamel.

Oh! and my first thought with [name]Roma[/name] was tomatoes - not a bad thing, tomatoes are tasty lol.

My first though was tomatoes as well

Thanks for the great suggestions! You’re all so clever and helpful:) I love [name]Romilly[/name]. I’ve always wondered what is the correct pronounciation? [name]Long[/name] O or no? [name]Romany[/name] is cute too.

I don’t care for [name]Roma[/name] too much- it’s too much like a nickname for me. I would like to second the suggestions of [name]Romola[/name] and [name]Romilly[/name]. [name]Romola[/name] means “citizen of [name]Rome[/name]” and is absolutely adorable (plus it’s the name of a novel by [name]George[/name] [name]Eliot[/name]!) I pronoucne [name]Romilly[/name] like Raw-Muh-[name]Lee[/name] or Raw-Mih-[name]Lee[/name]. Either are great choices.
-[name]Athena[/name]

I know a [name]Roma[/name] (she is in her 50s) and she is one of the sweetest people I know, so the name has a very positive association for me. I love it!

[name]Roma[/name] is the Russian nn for the male name [name]Roman[/name]. It also made me think of tomatoes.
I love [name]Ramona[/name].

I first tought of the comedienne, [name]Dawn[/name] French, whose middle name is [name]Roma[/name]! It then kind of reminded me of a female version of [name]Roman[/name] but I didn’t really think of gypsies. If it does bother you, use it as a MN because it’s still very pretty. I love the other suggestions of [name]Romilly[/name] and [name]Romilda[/name] and I also like [name]Ramona[/name] which is similar. I wouldn’t go with [name]Romany[/name] as I think this has a stronger connotation with gypsies than [name]Roma[/name], given that they’re more commonly called Romani gypsies.

For sisters, I like [name]Cecilia[/name] and [name]Roma[/name]/[name]Ramona[/name]/[name]Romilly[/name]/[name]Romilda[/name] and also [name]Cecilia[/name] and [name]Estelle[/name] (rather than [name]Estella[/name]). [name]Caroline[/name] seems a bit plain next to [name]Cecilia[/name]. Good luck with whatever you choose

My son is [name]Roman[/name]; [name]Roma[/name]'s nice. Have you heard of the name [name]Athina[/name]? It’s the name of the granddaughter of [name]Aristotle[/name] Onassis, one of the richest women in the world, the Greek spelling of [name]Athena[/name] (ancient Greek goddess) and would go nicely with [name]Cecilia[/name] (which is related to the island of [name]Sicily[/name]). I’ve heard it pronounced Ath-in-uh (stress on first syllable) but I’ve heard Greeks pronounce it At-in-uh (silent H). I also like [name]Cosima[/name] and Casimira/Kasimira for a more exotic European name that would go with [name]Cecilia[/name].

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Roma[/name]. I just answered that “Five [name]Little[/name] Girls” thread, and one of my names is [name]Roma[/name] [name]Francesca[/name].

[name]Roma[/name] is fine. If you use [name]Estelle[/name] instead of [name]Estella[/name] then the two won’t share the same last sound. I don’t particularly like the same starting letter in siblings.

I like [name]Roma[/name] and I love love love [name]Romilly[/name]

I love [name]Roma[/name] as a nickname for [name]Ramona[/name]. I think they both go very well with [name]Cecilia[/name].

My DD is [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Mae[/name] and we call her [name]Roma[/name] at least half the time. It does have an association with the Romani or [name]Roma[/name] people from Eastern Europe. My daughter’s grandmother is half [name]Roma[/name] (my husband 1/4) so that is an association that we don’t mind having, although I can honestly say nobody has ever once asked/noticed/commented on it (she is 18 months old).

When I hear [name]Roma[/name] and [name]Cecilia[/name] together I immediately think of of Italian cities [name]Rome[/name] and [name]Sicily[/name] (since [name]Roma[/name] is Italian for [name]Rome[/name]).

[name]Caroline[/name] is lovely, the first letter thing would bother me but since they don’t even share the same sound its probably no big deal.

[name]Estella[/name] and [name]Cecilia[/name] sound very matchy to me.
