Romanian-English names

Just found out expecting first baby!! Well… not just… but am now at point where I’ve started to share with people :joy:

Looking for names for both genders that will work in my English family and my DH’s Romanian family. DH name ends in “ei” and we don’t want baby’s name to have that same ending!

Also ideally avoiding names ending with ‘a’ (clashes with surname)

Thank you to anyone who gives ideas… all suggestions welcome!

[name_m]Adam[/name_m], [name_m]Adrian[/name_m], [name_m]Albert[/name_m], [name_m]Alex[/name_m], [name_m]Damian[/name_m], [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], [name_m]Darius[/name_m], [name_m]David[/name_m], [name_m]Dorian[/name_m], [name_m]Fabian[/name_m], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_m]Ivan[/name_m], [name_m]Leonard[/name_m], [name_m]Lucian[/name_m], [name_m]Martin[/name_m], [name_m]Paul[/name_m], [name_m]Robert[/name_m], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Victor[/name_m]

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Carmen[/name_f], [name_f]Lilian[/name_f]

All girl names used in [name_f]Romania[/name_f] end in -a, except for [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Carmen[/name_f], so that’s unfortunately unavoidable with your surname! But I don’t think it’s the end of the world.

Thank you!! I know so many end in -a which is what makes this so hard haha, maybe I could be open to one as so many of these names are gorgeous

Loveee the idea of [name_f]Lilian[/name_f] nn lili, but not sure whether it would work with last name that also starts with L?

Are there any names that might not be traditionally Romanian but could still work with both families?

I think a lot would, but again, primarily ones in -a since those are the only traditionally accepted girl names! Beatrice and Carmen are only exceptions because of the close cultural link that Romania has with Italy and Italian. (I will also add here that the suggestion of Lilian wouldn’t work since that’s a boy name in Romania!) So if you did want to go for something else that doesn’t end in -a, maybe look at more Italian girl names? Maybe Adele, Alice, Noemi, Violante? Keeping in mind that some of those would be pronounced differently in Romanian vs. English.

I know French is also a common second language in Romania, so potentially a French-origin name (e.g. Elodie, Amelie, Sylvie) could do the trick, but I’d ask your husband to make sure!

How about (and will need to check with DH, how transferable):

Amelie, Helen, Irene, Sofie/Sophie, Isabel, Carmen, Noelle, Celine, Iris, Annie, Simone, Vivienne, Celeste, Beatrice, Ingrid, Agnes, Alice, Evelyn, Elise & Odette.

(Girls suggestions less literal as A endings the most commonly in Romania as flagged above, but these would be recognisable and some listed are apparently very much in use there.)

Alexander, Lucas, Luca, Luke, Adrien, Matteo, Leo, Sebastian (my fave!), Edward, Albert, Elias, Liam, Felix, Emil, Julian, Nicholas, George, Oscar, Gabriel & Simon.

(Again, all English versions of popular names there and/or names apparently in use in Romania.)

(as most Romanian girl names end in -a, I’ve offered some slight twists on those)

I’m Romanian and will be using a Romanian name for my child, although if you are having a girl it will be a bit difficult to avoid a name that ends with ‘a’. I would suggest:

[name_f]Catrinel[/name_f] (for a girl)

[name_m]Petru[/name_m] or [name_m]Petre[/name_m] (both versions of [name_m]Peter[/name_m])

[name_m]Casian[/name_m]

[name_m]Constantin[/name_m]

[name_f]Madalina[/name_f] (spelled [name_f]Mădălina[/name_f] in Romanian)

[name_f]Delia[/name_f]

[name_f]Elodia[/name_f]

[name_f]Anca[/name_f]

[name_m]Andrei[/name_m]

[name_m]Adam[/name_m]

[name_f]Angelica[/name_f]

[name_m]Dimitrie[/name_m]

[name_m]Emilian[/name_m]

[name_m]Ilie[/name_m]

[name_f]Ilinca[/name_f]

Iulian

[name_m]Silviu[/name_m]

[name_f]Ioana[/name_f]

[name_f]Adelina[/name_f]

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
