I’ve always liked the names [name_u]Rory[/name_u] and [name_u]Toby[/name_u], but I don’t know how well they’ll age. The only time I’ve seen them used on adults is on TV, once each, and while they’re cute on a little boy I’m not sure how well they’d suit an adult. I wouldn’t use any full names for [name_u]Toby[/name_u] - [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] has too much of an association for me, [name_m]Tobiah[/name_m] feels incomplete and [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] isn’t my style - and [name_u]Rory[/name_u] doesn’t have any longer forms that I know of anyway.
Have you/ do you know any adults named [name_u]Toby[/name_u] or [name_u]Rory[/name_u], and how well do the names suit them? And are they too matchy for hypothetical brothers?
I do know an adult named [name_u]Rory[/name_u], and it’s never seemed out of place to me.
I don’t know anyone named [name_u]Toby[/name_u], but there is an actor [name_u]Toby[/name_u] [name_m]Maguire[/name_m], and a singer [name_u]Toby[/name_u] [name_m]Keith[/name_m].
My cousin (who is in his early 40s now) is named [name_u]Rory[/name_u] and his son is [name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_m]Jr[/name_m]. I think the name works fine on a child or an adult, it seems to age well in my opinion.
I don’t know anyone named [name_u]Toby[/name_u] personally but the references the pp gave show that it ages just fine as well.
I’ve not heard of [name_u]Toby[/name_u] [name_m]Keith[/name_m], but I completely forgot about [name_u]Tobey[/name_u] [name_m]Maguire[/name_m]. Good to see they seem to age well though, makes me feel a bit more confident about a potential usage of them.
I really love both names, but not as siblings. [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is a full legitimate name. I like [name_u]Toby[/name_u], but prefer [name_m]Tobias[/name_m].
I recently saw [name_u]Rory[/name_u] on a TV show and I’m totally charmed. Of course, it could be the show…haha. I’ve never liked [name_u]Toby[/name_u] though. Doesn’t help that the only one I’ve known was kind of creepy!
I know an adult (male in his 30s) named [name_u]Rory[/name_u]. It works for him.
As mentioned, the only adult Tobys I know of are [name_u]Toby[/name_u] [name_m]Keith[/name_m] and [name_u]Toby[/name_u] [name_m]Maguire[/name_m]. I’m not sure how that one will age. I like the full name alternatives, though.
I knew an adult [name_m]Ruari[/name_m] ([name_u]Rory[/name_u]). He’s a graphic designer/college teacher. He was really cool Most kids favourite teacher.
I like [name_u]Toby[/name_u], too! Like you, I don’t like any of the full names for it. I’d consider using [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] but it’s my nephew’s name.
I could easily see [name_u]Rory[/name_u] and [name_u]Toby[/name_u] on grown men.
I know an teenager called [name_u]Rory[/name_u]…but she’s a girl (full name [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]).
As for [name_u]Toby[/name_u], it’s too “nicknamey” for my taste. I understand you don’t like any of the long forms, but use a full version or don’t use it at all.
@carlasworld - I’m not going to use a long form I hate to get to a short form I love when [name_u]Toby[/name_u] is equally legit as a given name. I know some people might find it too nicknamey but I’m in the UK where names like [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] and [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] are finding their way onto birth certificates without any long form, and I find [name_u]Toby[/name_u] a more substantial stand-alone name than any of them.
I think [name_u]Toby[/name_u] is a great name and ages well, the name [name_u]Toby[/name_u] means “God is Good” and I think that makes me like it even more. I would use it as a stand alone name, but I also like [name_m]Tobias[/name_m],and [name_m]Tobiah[/name_m]. Have you consider [name_m]Tobit[/name_m]? Tobert? Tobermory? Tobish? [name_f]Tovah[/name_f]?
As for [name_u]Rory[/name_u], while I do like the name [name_u]Rory[/name_u] for a boy…I automatically think girl…
Could be a nickname for [name_m]Roderick[/name_m], [name_m]Gregory[/name_m], [name_m]Leroy[/name_m], [name_u]Roy[/name_u]?
