Rory Vs. Remy... I need your thoughts

I started a thread on [name_u]Remy[/name_u], and got a ton of opinions on it, but I still adore [name_u]Remy[/name_u] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] for my daughter. However, my boyfriend has the association of a male [name_u]Remy[/name_u] on some show called House of Cards. He hasn’t said NO… he just isn’t sure about it.

However, I came across a Nameberry list of names for redheaded kids and spotted [name_u]Rory[/name_u], which means “red king” and I thought that would actually be a cool alternative to [name_u]Remy[/name_u] because our kids will most likely be redheaded.

But then, the more I started saying [name_u]Rory[/name_u] out loud, it just didn’t roll off the tongue as well as [name_u]Remy[/name_u].

So, I need your thoughts Berries! I like both, [name_u]Remy[/name_u] more though. [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is technically “unisex” and has a meaning that fits for us, but I find it harder to say than [name_u]Remy[/name_u]. What do you think?

Ps. To save you guys some time, NO we are not considering full names for [name_u]Remy[/name_u] or [name_u]Rory[/name_u]. And NO the alternative of [name_u]Romy[/name_u] isn’t an option. BUT, we are open to other suggestions.

I prefer [name_u]Rory[/name_u] over [name_u]Remy[/name_u], personally. I imagine it might be difficult for a young child to say though, which actually might turn out to be adorable and obviously will pass as her speech develops. I have a boy cousin with this name, and it works for him. I could see it working for a girl too.

Another thought are the names [name_u]Raleigh[/name_u] and [name_u]Riley[/name_u]

For me personally, I really only see them as male names. We are currently living in [name_m]Quebec[/name_m] and I’ve met a lot of little boys named [name_u]Remy[/name_u]. And my father is a mega PGA fanatic, so I think of the golfer [name_u]Rory[/name_u] McIlroy when I see [name_u]Rory[/name_u].

However, I could see how either of them could be taken as feminine. [name_u]Remy[/name_u] more so I think since “[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]” is becoming more well known. (though I’d probably go for [name_u]Rory[/name_u] since I’ve met more boys named [name_u]Remy[/name_u] than [name_u]Rory[/name_u])

As for suggestions, what is it exactly that draws you to [name_u]Rory[/name_u] and [name_u]Remy[/name_u]? Is it the short R names ending with Y? Or is it the spunky-like feel to them?

I love the spunky simplicity about them. I generally like names with the “em” sound in them (in my signature there is [name_f]Gemma[/name_f], but the boyfriend doesn’t like it.) If my daughter is anything like me or her father she’ll be feisty, especially with red hair
I like [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]/[name_f]Emme[/name_f] but the R attached on the front gives it an extra something, I dunno.
Names we like but can’t use:
[name_u]Piper[/name_u], [name_u]Reese[/name_u], [name_u]Hadley[/name_u], [name_u]Harper[/name_u].
Names I like, but he won’t let me use:
[name_f]Jubilee[/name_f], [name_f]Liberty[/name_f], [name_u]Vivian[/name_u], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
Names he likes:
[name_u]Everly[/name_u], [name_f]Evalyn[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f] (He is super picky)

Maybe that will give you an idea of what we are looking for

I also tend to think of [name_u]Remy[/name_u] as a male name so I prefer [name_u]Rory[/name_u] for a girl. They’re both really cute!

Haha, I totally understand the picky significant other! [name_f]My[/name_f] husband is the same exact way!

Some other R names:

Romily (may be too close for [name_u]Romy[/name_u] for you?)
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_u]Rainy[/name_u]
[name_m]Ramey[/name_m]
[name_f]Reba[/name_f]

Some names with “em” in them:

[name_f]Demi[/name_f]
[name_f]Drema[/name_f] (not sure if it’s a real name or not. I saw it on another site)
Semele
[name_u]Nemi[/name_u] (same as [name_f]Drema[/name_f])
Belem

Some random names:

[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_f]Emma[/name_f] (I know it’s popular but I met the most darling little red headed girl named [name_f]Emma[/name_f])
[name_f]Veda[/name_f]
[name_f]Selah[/name_f]
[name_f]Neva[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]/[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]/[name_f]Edie[/name_f]
[name_f]Tamsin[/name_f]
[name_f]Liesel[/name_f]
[name_f]Harlow[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] I was able to help a little bit!

I see [name_u]Remy[/name_u] as unisex as [name_u]Rory[/name_u], but thanks to [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who I love [name_u]Rory[/name_u] much more on a boy. For a girl I prefer [name_u]Remy[/name_u]

I really think they are both cute, but I agree with a lot of the PPs that I see [name_u]Remy[/name_u] as a french boy name. I guess its due in large part because my son loves the Disney movie Ratatouille and [name_u]Remy[/name_u] is the name of the main character rat. I think [name_u]Rory[/name_u] gets a boost for a girl from [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] girls. For me though, I like either as nicknames. I think [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is an adorable and unexpected nn for [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], and [name_u]Remy[/name_u] would be cute for something like [name_f]Romilly[/name_f].

Okay, before I give the above suggestions to the boyfriend, [name_m]How[/name_m] would you say [name_f]Romilly[/name_f]? I don’t really like [name_u]Romy[/name_u] because it reminds me of [name_u]Romney[/name_u], but there is something about [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] that doesn’t give me that connection. (not sure why.) I’m saying it like Rah-milly. Am I right or wrong in that?

I much prefer [name_u]Remy[/name_u] to [name_u]Rory[/name_u], but both are great names. [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] is lovely! I pronounce it RAH-mih-lee.

I see Remy as unisex as Rory, but thanks to Doctor Who I love Rory much more on a boy. For a girl I prefer Remy

[name_f]My[/name_f] thoughts exactly.

Okay sooo I just talked to the boyfriend about it. He prefers [name_u]Remy[/name_u] over [name_u]Rory[/name_u], but he likes [name_f]Emme[/name_f]/[name_f]Emmy[/name_f] over all of it.

So, does anyone have any suggestions of cool middle names to go with [name_f]Emme[/name_f]/[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]? and which spelling of it do you prefer? I still like [name_u]Remy[/name_u] but I’ll throw this out there to see if any cool/spunky middles can make me fall for his choice

I like [name_u]Rory[/name_u] for a girl; I like [name_u]Remy[/name_u] for a boy; and I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Rory[/name_u] for a boy (tho I also find [name_u]Rory[/name_u] a bit awkward to say). [name_u]Remy[/name_u] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is a cute, spunky combo though, so if you love it I say go for it!

[name_m]Just[/name_m] saw your latest post. [name_f]Emme[/name_f]/[name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is cute, but how will it age? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Esme[/name_f] at all?

[name_u]Rory[/name_u], definitely. I actually really dislike [name_u]Remy[/name_u]. It sounds like a stuffy, uptight rich guy. I could never see it on a little girl, my apologies. [name_u]Rory[/name_u], though a bit harder to pronounce, is absolutely adorable. [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], nn [name_f]Rorie[/name_f], is actually on my list

I prefer [name_u]Rory[/name_u].

I love [name_u]Rory[/name_u] and [name_u]Remy[/name_u] for a boy so I dislike them on a girl (though I do think [name_u]Rory[/name_u] makes a cute nn for [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]) but [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] I really like (I say Rom-illy)

[name_f]Emmy[/name_f] is cute but as someone mentioned I don’t know if it would age well. Would you consider it as a nn for a longer name? (e.g. [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] or [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]) I prefer the [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] spelling over [name_f]Emme[/name_f] (but my favourite is [name_f]Emmie[/name_f]) because I think [name_f]Emme[/name_f] looks like it is one syllable, [name_f]Em[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Esme[/name_f], but my boyfriend hates it. Otherwise, I’d prefer it over pretty much anything haha

We actually almost decided on [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] for our girl name once. But [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] feels too frilly for us, and I just don’t feel like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] would fit our baby, either. If that makes sense.

I also think of [name_u]Remy[/name_u] as a singularly boy name, especially after watching House of Cards. [name_m]Both[/name_m] are kind of in the limelight as names right now with [name_u]Remy[/name_u] from HoC and [name_u]Rory[/name_u] McElroy the golfer (both men).

[name_f]My[/name_f] vote would be for [name_u]Rory[/name_u] as a girl’s name though - I have a unisex name and love it!!
