Rosa and Valentina, or Rosa and Julia?

[name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering which sibset you prefer?

We already have a [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] and DD2 is on her way any day. We love [name_f]Julia[/name_f], which is a family name.

We also adore [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] (would probably call her [name_f]Nina[/name_f] for short) and it’s at least as rare as [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] where we’re currently living (Irish family in Australia, but we do have links to [name_f]Italy[/name_f].)

But as we’re about to move to [name_u]California[/name_u], I’m wondering what the US preconceptions of [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] are. Is it a name strongly associated with Spanish speaking families? Would it be weird to have two Irish sisters called [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], or does that matter? It’s number 98 on the 2013 baby name list for [name_u]California[/name_u], so it’s obviously a lot more popular there than here.

[name_f]Julia[/name_f] is about 78 I think but I look on it as a classic so less worried about it dating.

Our alternatives are:
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] (maybe)

Any advice would be great! I am due any day…

[name_u]California[/name_u] has a pretty large Spanish population, I believe. I don’t think [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] will get any weird looks. It’s a beautiful name! You should definitely use it if you love it.

I prefer [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] as a name, but I think [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] & [name_f]Julia[/name_f] stylistically fit better together since they both have that simple and timeless feel to them.

I also like [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]. [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] doesn’t do it for me with a [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] in your family already. If she was a [name_f]Rose[/name_f], then I could see it, but [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] draws me to more Latinate sounding names for a sister.

Oh it’s so pretty! I adore [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] and rosa together!
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] is spunky and I love it too, but [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] and rosa make a great set.
It certainly wouldn’t surprise me if sisters [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] were from a Spanish speaking family but I also don’t think I’d assume it based on the names…pretty hard to tell based on those first names alone in my opinion.

Thanks Oiseau and [name_f]Pacifica[/name_f]. One each so far! I think I tend to agree about [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] and [name_f]Julia[/name_f] ‘fitting’ better. I also like pretty much every possible nickname for [name_f]Julia[/name_f] but I don’t like [name_u]Val[/name_u] or [name_f]Tina[/name_f] at all. I do love [name_f]Nina[/name_f] though.

It’s likely this baby will be paled skinned with blue eyes and brown or blonde hair if that makes a difference.

Thanks mom2one2. Loving your enthusiasm! Our surname is three syllables and definitely more old-fashioned, English -sounding. ([name_m]Don[/name_m]'t want to make myself googlable by saying it.)

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] is a bit long next to [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] [name_f]IMO[/name_f] (you’ve chosen a beautiful name for your first daughter btw!). [name_f]Julia[/name_f] fits more nicely with [name_f]Rosa[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] about

[name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f]/[name_f]Fiora[/name_f]
[name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Perla[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f]/[name_f]Millie[/name_f]
[name_f]Adele[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]

Thanks svea! She loves her name. It’s hard to find one that lives up. [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] is very cute from your list and Iove the sound of [name_f]Perla[/name_f] but a) it makes me think of bras and b) it is awful with our surname.

Not mad on [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] or [name_f]Vera[/name_f] and [name_f]Ella[/name_f]/[name_f]Milly[/name_f] are very common where we live now - maybe not so much in the USA, but I’m a bit over them.

Your post reminded me that I love [name_f]Freya[/name_f] though (pops it back on the list)

[name_f]Rosa[/name_f] and [name_f]Freya[/name_f] would be absolutely gorgeous together.

I have a bit of a hard time with the short name long name combo with [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], but no one else would notice, especially is you’re calling her [name_f]Nina[/name_f]. [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] is lovely and different.

I love [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] and have the same concerns but plan to call [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] [name_f]Sosie[/name_f]. [name_f]Sosie[/name_f] and [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] work.

I prefer [name_f]Julia[/name_f], [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] is overkill for me and too much. [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] and [name_f]Julia[/name_f] sound lovely together. You could always have [name_f]Nina[/name_f] as a complete name which I also love.

I think [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] is lovely but agree [name_f]Julia[/name_f] is the better fit here. With your last name being pretty long already, that’s a consideration as well. I also like the suggestion of just [name_f]Nina[/name_f]. I don’t know if you have a middle set but [name_f]Julia[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] is pretty. A little matchy with the -a endings but it still works.

[name_f]Rosa[/name_f] and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] nn Nina are gorgeous together.
I don’t think that name length should matter much. If you find two names that are both extremely gorgeous and you love, use them together.
You don’t have to have a Rosa, Julia, Eric and Freya just because they’re all short.
A Rosa, Valentina, Max and William are just as lovely.
