Rosemary

Out of pure curiosity, because it recently occurred to me that people actually pronounce this name differently, how do y’all pronounce [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]?

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you pronounce it rose • mary?
[name_u]Or[/name_u] rose • eh • mary? (this is how I say it)

Have I just been pronouncing it weird? I heard someone the other day say this name and they just said “rose • mary” and I was like :open_mouth:

Like Marie?! To me [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is just an herb (I’ve never heard it on someone as a name), and I’ve only ever heard it pronounced rose • eh • mary, but I live in the southern states so everyone around here pronounces everything differently :sob:. I usually think of [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalina[/name_f], etc when pronouncing [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]. I hadn’t considered your pronunciation an option but I like the way it sounds! I love hearing the different ways people pronounce things.

I say rose-mary and that’s also how I pronounce the herb. But I’ve also heard rose-muh-ree (like Marie) too. I think you’re probably just pronouncing it with a southern accent!

Yuck! And I try so hard to hide it too :joy: I hate when I say something and wind up sounding like cornbread. But I was made fun of in elementary school for sounding country, ironic considering I grew up in a little farm town and everyone where I live is country!

I’ve heard [name_f]Rose[/name_f] + [name_f]Mary[/name_f], or ROSE-muh-ree (like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] + Marie). I think the second is the more common British pronunciation and the first is more common in [name_u]America[/name_u].

I’m from the midwestern us. I say Rose-Mary. I have heard Rose-Marie but, in those cases, I’ve seen it spelled [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f].

[name_f]Rose[/name_f] + mary. That’s how I say the herb too. I’m from [name_u]Texas[/name_u] for reference.

Out of all the people I’ve heard say this name, I have only ever heard rose+mary. Seriously shocked to learn anyone says it differently :flushed:

Yeah, like [name_u]Marie[/name_u] - that’s how the herb would be pronounced here in the UK too - I think it’s all just about accents and different emphasis

I pronounce it like Rose-Mary. I live in the American [name_u]South[/name_u], if it helps!

Always rose-mary, never heard anyone say like you do. I’d spell the rose-muh-ree prn as [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f]

(I’m in the [name_u]Southern[/name_u] US if that helps)

I’m from the Midwest US, and I say [name_f]Rose[/name_f] + [name_f]Mary[/name_f] unless it’s spelled a different way.
