[name]Rowena[/name] was the name of my great-grandmother on my dad’s side. From the picture that we have of her, it’s evident that I look almost exactly like her. Is [name]Rowena[/name] too out there as a first name for a girl? Middle name likely Ferree (pronounced Feh-[name]RAY[/name], my middle name and mom’s maiden name), last name T00n.
I think [name]Rowena[/name] is pretty, but maybe a little much. I much prefer [name]Rowan[/name] (or even [name]Rowen[/name]).
I actually just read a book with a character [name]Rowena[/name]. I can definitely see it as a grown woman- glamorous, sophisicated. I’d probably pair it with a more common middle name, but your daughter will have a unique, significant name!
I love [name]Rowena[/name]! It’s an underused classic and so cool that it’s a genuine family name of a relative you resemble (strange how those genes can cross generations, right?). I say go go go.
Thanks for the feedback, glad to see it’s not automatically too weird. I just learned that my dad’s second sister has [name]Rowena[/name] as a middle name (first name [name]Susan[/name]) and apparently she hates it Everyone in my family thinks I’m crazy for even considering it, but then again, they don’t haunt nameberry like I do
I’m not pregnant, but we have thrown caution to the wind so it could happen anytime. I’m glad to have this forum to bounce ideas off of, I think my family is getting a bit tired of hearing, “What do you think of the name…”
I think it’s really beautiful, and even better that you have a family connection to it. You could always use [name]Rena[/name] or [name]Rene[/name] as a more “normal” nn.
Dad says it sounds like the farmer’s wife: “[name]Rowena[/name], where’s the egg money?”
I love the name [name]Rowena[/name], I think it’s so soft it doesn’t sound out there. And I think Ferree is a lovely middle name.
The egg money! I love it. Well, I think [name]Rowena[/name] might be just a tiny bit farmy, but it’s not like naming your kid [name]Ina[/name] [name]May[/name] or something. I think [name]Rowena[/name] is quite elegant. I knew a [name]Rowena[/name], and I always admired her name. I thought, how can a name that sounds a little like you’re holding your nose also sound so beautiful? That W in the middle really works wonders. Nice that it’s a family name. Also nice that it’s unlikely to become trendy. While very pretty, it’s unexpectedly so. Not like a flower name or a name with lots of feminine trills. I vote for a middle name that repeats that “wee” sound… [name]Rowena[/name] [name]Bee[/name], [name]Rowena[/name] [name]Clarice[/name], etc.
Oh I didn’t see Ferree up there. [name]Rowena[/name] Ferree is good too. And meaningful, which is most important.
Is this pronounced [name]Ro[/name]-when-a or [name]Ro[/name]-wee-na? I love love love [name]Ro[/name]-when-a!
I pronounce it [name]Ro[/name]-way-na. [name]Ro[/name]-wee-na, well… sounds like wiener
I like [name]Rowena[/name]. The only time I have ever seen it used was in [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] with [name]Rowena[/name] Ravenclaw, so I think of someone really smart with dark brown hair and in a dark blue dress. It would be very unexpected.
Like @mara_lyn86 the first time I heard [name]Rowena[/name] was [name]Rowena[/name] Ravenclaw in [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]!
[name]Rowena[/name] is absolutely beautiful. I don’t think it’s out there as all, as [name]Rowan[/name] is familiar and there is also the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] connection with the name. But meaning definitely trumps all in this case. I say go for it! It’d be a wonderful surprise to meet a little [name]Rowena[/name].
[name]Rowena[/name] Ferree… ah, such a lovely flow to it, and yet, it still feels down-to-earth and grown-up. Then of course there is the cross generational honoring, definitely go for it!
[name]Rowena[/name], is different. When I think of the name, I think mystical, strong, Ravenclaw.
I adore [name]Rowena[/name] - are you saying row-een-ah or row-enn-ah? I personally pronounce it row-enn-ah, though I know a lot of people say row-een-ah. Ferree is really neat.
I would say it ro-[name]WAY[/name]-na too.
Such a beautiful and sophisticated choice
I agree with this! I love [name]Rowena[/name] and know a beautiful [name]Rowena[/name] my age, she’s very kind and sweet as well. [name]Rowena[/name] is gorgeous and [name]Rowena[/name] Ferree is quite intriguing and lovely!
[name]Rowena[/name] is nice, although I much prefer [name]Rowan[/name].
