The more I think about names for a baby girl, the more that [name]Ruby[/name] seems like the perfect choice. I can’t help it. It’s still relatively uncommon in the United States, it is popular in [name]England[/name] and [name]Wales[/name]… which is actually perfect because I have a love affair with all things British, it comes with its own theme song with [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Tuesday[/name] by The Rolling Stones. Plus, I recently remembered that it was the name of one of [name]Anne[/name] [name]Shirley[/name]'s best friends in [name]Anne[/name] of [name]Green[/name] Gables. She wasn’t my favorite character, but I adore that it has a connection to one of my favorite books growing up. Anyway, I’m pretty set on it as THE name for our second daughter. Which is kind of amazing because I didn’t think it was possible for me to love a name as much as my first daughter’s name, which is [name]Autumn[/name] [name]Grace[/name].
Now to choose a middle name, it’s a bit more difficult. I was thinking maybe [name]Hope[/name] since that was the name that my husband and I had picked out for our second daughter, and had planned on using for the past thirteen years. Plus, I think that it might be easier to convince him if “[name]Hope[/name]” is still in her name somewhere. I’m thinking it might be a bit clunky though. Our last name is [name]Carlisle[/name]. What do you think of [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Hope[/name] [name]Carlisle[/name]? And do you think it would make a good sister name to [name]Autumn[/name] [name]Grace[/name]? We also have three boys: [name]Joshua[/name] [name]David[/name], [name]Noah[/name] [name]Brian[/name] and [name]Levi[/name] [name]Paul[/name].
I think it is beautiful combination. I love how you have virtue names for both your daughters’ middles. It ties the names together well and makes a great sibset.
Here is the nameberry list of virtue names, but I looked at this list and think the [name]Hope[/name] goes the best with [name]Ruby[/name]!
Some that aren’t on that list and might be cool:
[name]Ruby[/name] [name]Bliss[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name] Defiance
[name]Ruby[/name] [name]Ever[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name] Wonder
I think [name]Ruby[/name] is perfect! I love that you found a name as good as [name]Autumn[/name]. I think [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Hope[/name] is a great combo, it doesn’t sound clunky at all. [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Autumn[/name], [name]Joshua[/name], [name]Noah[/name], and [name]Levi[/name] are a fab sibset!
It sounds pretty perfect for you, and [name]Autumn[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name] as sisters would be so sweet!
As a side note, you might want to listen to The [name]Kaiser[/name] Chief’s song [name]Ruby[/name] which is pretty much what kicked off the whole string of little [name]Ruby[/name]'s being born in the UK, 2006 onwards. I promise it’ll reaffirm your love of [name]Ruby[/name] and also British rock bands
I honestly do not think [name]Ruby[/name] is uncommon in the US. I know at least 3 Rubys off the top of my head and I live in a small suburb. I still really like it, it’s super cute.
Popularity is very difficult for me to determine. All of my other kids are school age or older, and although my husband and I both used to be teachers, all of the kids that we have known would now be older. Among the five of us, we have only known two people named [name]Ruby[/name]. [name]One[/name] was the mother of one of my friends growing up and one is currently four years old. But even though our experience with [name]Ruby[/name]'s is limited, it doesn’t reflect any kids that were born in say 2006 or later. I don’t think that there are any [name]Ruby[/name]'s in our church nursery, but since my kids are older and I wasn’t expecting to be in this situation again, I wasn’t really paying attention to the baby announcements, other than to notice if they were pretty names or the names of my own children.
According to [name]Baby[/name] name wizard, [name]Ruby[/name] is currently #113 and has been hovering near the top 100. I’m okay with a name in the top 100. The name of my older daughter, [name]Autumn[/name] is higher both in our state and nation wide than the name [name]Ruby[/name]. (nationwide, [name]Autumn[/name] is #69 and [name]Ruby[/name] is #109; statewide [name]Autumn[/name] is #77 and [name]Ruby[/name] doesn’t make the top 100) While I would think [name]Ruby[/name] is more of a name-on-the-rise than [name]Autumn[/name], [name]Autumn[/name] did have an almost 20 place jump nationwide this past year, while [name]Ruby[/name] has essentially stayed between 100 and 115 for the past five years. We occasionally will be at a restaraunt and hear someone else call their daughter “[name]Autumn[/name]” but I could probably count on my two hands how many times that has happened in her entire life. So I’m okay with that.
Plus, we homeschool which puts us a little outside of the mainstream. Different types of names would be more popular in our social circles than they would be in society at large. For example, it is difficult to find a truly unique Bible name for a boy. But when I look at [name]Autumn[/name]'s friends, even more popular names aren’t usually shared by more than two girls. For example, we only know one [name]Sophie[/name], one [name]Emily[/name] and one [name]Kate[/name]. We also know one [name]Danae[/name] and one [name]Willow[/name]. So I think [name]Ruby[/name] would be a relatively uncommon name for us in our situation.
I think I’ve only met 1 [name]Ruby[/name], and I’m a nanny that winds up at a lot of kids classes and play places. It’s a known, but uncommon name where I live.
