so my partner REALLY LOVES the name [name]Rufus[/name]. This is rare, because he doesn’t like any names. The only girl name I can get him to say yes to is [name]Imogen[/name] and even that is just “okay”. As far as boy names go, he likes [name]Jude[/name] and has begrudgingly agreed to either [name]Leo[/name] or [name]Hugo[/name]. I like it too, in theory. it has a rich history, and is kind of quirky, plus, it has indie cred ([name]Rufus[/name] [name]Wainwright[/name]). BUT it seems like a bit much for an actual child. Maybe that’s because I have never met a [name]Rufus[/name]? I don’t know.
What do the berries think?
P.S-Other names we will most likely use are [name]Jude[/name], [name]Leo[/name], and [name]Imogen[/name]. [name]How[/name] does [name]Rufus[/name] sound with these?
I am thinking [name]Rufus[/name] [name]Henry[/name] as a full name.
I love [name]Jude[/name] and [name]Leo[/name], and I like [name]Imogen[/name], but I can’t stand [name]Rufus[/name]. It’s popular on nameberry, but honestly I think of it as a kind of joke name. [name]Rufus[/name] reminds me of the rat on [name]Kim[/name] Possible, or something I’d suggest to my SO in jest. I would find it pretty hard to have a serious conversation while calling someone [name]Rufus[/name].
But, that’s just me and it is popular on nameberry, so it’s clearly got it’s fans. If you both love it, use it! If not, perhaps it could be a middle.
I agree with PP. Whenever I hear [name]Rufus[/name] it makes me think of a dog. Sorry. I know it is popular here but 90% of people your child will encounter are not nameberries and will probably tease him. I know it is difficult when your husband doesn’t agree on names but you need to find a name you both love not one you desperately hope will work out. However if you truly love it then go for it and don’t listen to what anyone else says.
I say YAY! [name]Don[/name]'t not name your child a rare name your DH actually loves b/c some people “may tease him”. Also I highly doubt it would be as high as 90% of the people he encounters. The only obvious teasing I could think of is that it rhymes with doofus, but my ln rhymes w/ whore and I was never called that as a child, which is quite surprising . Anyways I think a lot of it also depends on where you live. If you are in a,for lack of a better term, “hipster” area or large city in the US [name]Rufus[/name] would probably get a lot of compliments but in places where [name]Aiden[/name] and [name]Jacob[/name] still rule you may get some looks, but who cares? [name]Rufus[/name] has a rich history and like you said indie cred and is starting to sound more modern especially with names like [name]Magnus[/name] and [name]Otis[/name] becoming more popular and well known. [name]Just[/name] because a name is popular on nb but not on other middle of the road sites or name books doesn’t mean only a small cult of baby name obsessives on this board will appreciate the name. Honestly a joke name to me would be [name]Zayden[/name] not the classic, rich with history [name]Rufus[/name]. Also I think it fits perfectly with the other names you are considering. If [name]Rufus[/name] is too much of a risk for you there is always [name]Rhys[/name]. With gloabalization people are exposed more and more to names and sounds they haven’t heard before or are not used to, so I think now is a better time than ever to be adventurous but most importantly choose a name you [name]LOVE[/name] no matter how much it will get picked apart. [name]Just[/name] wanted to show some [name]Rufus[/name] love!
[name]Rufus[/name] sounds like a dog’s name to me now and I’d feel the need to have a nn for it and ruffie is one but it sounds like the drug and fus or fussy is just weird. Names like [name]Rufus[/name] is:
I know more dogs named [name]Max[/name], [name]Jake[/name], [name]Abby[/name] and [name]Ella[/name] compared to [name]Rufus[/name], just saying. Another viable former “dog” name that should be revived? [name]Rex[/name]! You could also name your child Spot.
[name]Love[/name] the name [name]Rufus[/name]. I personally despise when people say “that’s a dog’s name” - I know lots of dogs named [name]Sam[/name], [name]Max[/name], [name]Jack[/name], [name]Sadie[/name] and [name]Sophie[/name], but no one bats an eye when someone gives those to a kid! Also I adore Mr. [name]Wainwright[/name].
I agree it is not nice to say “it is dog’s” name, since so many people use human names for their pets (I even like the name [name]Roscoe[/name], and was told this was a “dog’s” name - meh). I have mixed feelings about [name]Rufus[/name] though (I initially liked it, since I love “R” names), but thought about the awful nickname “Rufie”…
Thanks for the opinions. I am warming to [name]Rufus[/name] and its vintage quirkiness, but I still feel like I won’t be completely sold until I see it on an actual child. Not really why I feel that way, I have never met an [name]Imogen[/name], a [name]Leo[/name], a [name]Juniper[/name], a [name]Persephone[/name], or a [name]Hugo[/name] and have no problem whatsoever picturing them on a child/teen/adult.
Good thing we are not trying to have a baby any time soon, i just love names, so [name]Rufus[/name] stays on the list for now
I adore the name [name]Rufus[/name], mainly because it’s the name of one of my favorite musicians – [name]Rufus[/name] [name]Wainwright[/name]. However, I do understand your reservations, specifically, the potential for name-calling/being made fun of. What about using [name]Rufus[/name] as a middle name?
i.e. [name]Henry[/name] [name]Rufus[/name]
[name]Jude[/name] [name]Rufus[/name] (which isn’t very smooth-sounding)
[name]Leo[/name] [name]Rufus[/name]
I think [name]Rufus[/name] goes really well with your other choices, but maybe it’s not the ideal choice as a first name?
I think it’s fabulous! My boss is neighbors with a family with a young son named [name]Rufus[/name]. ([name]How[/name]'s that for 6 degrees of separation?) She said that she remembers when he was born, she was like, “[name]Rufus[/name]? Really??” But he is now a spunky little kid and she can’t picture him as anything OTHER than a [name]Rufus[/name].
And as much as I love [name]Henry[/name] as the mn with [name]Rufus[/name], I might suggest using a name that he could get a nn from, like RJ.
I like your other choices too. I wish my husband liked [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Imogen[/name]!!!
I’m surprised at all the [name]Rufus[/name] hate. I love [name]Rufus[/name]! Great meaning, great history, fresh and modern. Sounds like you’ve got a creative guy and I’d let him take over the baby naming while you seize control of something like…the money. Good luck.
my husband suggested this for our last child and 4 years later both of our families and friends that know still make fun of him. I love interesting names but this si too much for me, too…its a dog at best and just doesnt sound nice to me sorry!
I really love [name]Rufus[/name]! I know one little boy called [name]Rufus[/name], who is super cute, and a [name]Rufus[/name] in his late 20s who is very charming and handsome, and not one single dog! I’m really surprised that its such a big association for so many pps. Its got a great sound [name]IMO[/name], and is a strong, long-established name. I’d say definitely give [name]Rufus[/name] a chance!
I just want to add [name]Rufus[/name] does not sound like a dogs name to me. Its a cat!! My dad was given a cat for his birthday (my dad is NOT a cat person and it was more like a joke) he named him [name]Rufus[/name]. So maybe its a guy thing to like [name]Rufus[/name]. Haha anyways, we called him Rufie alot and that’s pretty cute. If I didn’t have the cat association, I could probably see it on an actual person. It does seem to have alot of modern qualities parents are looking for.
I think it the combination of the letters R and F that reminds me of words like rough; or names like [name]Ralph[/name], [name]Rolf[/name], [name]Rudolf[/name], or [name]Raphael[/name]. I guess it is not a favorite letter combination of mine.
As much as I love [name]Rufus[/name], one of my grandfather’s favorite stories to tell is about a dog he used to have named [name]Rufus[/name] the Dufus. That’s always gotten in the way for me.
Kids will make fun of any name if they want to… but I feel like kids these days don’t tease about names as much. It’s more common to have an unique name.
