[name_m]Russell[/name_m] [RUS-əl] is an [name_f]English[/name_f] name from a French surname meaning “little red one”. I’ve been crushing on this name as of late. He’d probably be called [name_u]Sully[/name_u] or [name_u]Rue[/name_u].
What do you think of the name [name_m]Russell[/name_m]? Which, if any, of the combos below do you like? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any suggestions?
Russell is a name I adore! I also love [name_m]Ruskin[/name_m] for a boy and [name_u]Russet[/name_u] for a girl.
It’s the last name of a minor [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables character which is enough to make me love it, plus the word rustle is exquisite, the breeze rustling the leaves.
And I love [name_u]Sully[/name_u] and [name_u]Rue[/name_u] as nns. All I could think of was [name_m]Russ[/name_m] which I detest.
It is the second middle we gave to our unborn son, [name_u]Owen[/name_u] [name_u]Michael[/name_u] [name_m]Russell[/name_m].
It’s never been particularly popular here (I don’t think I know a single one), so even though I occasionally see it described as “dated”, I don’t get that vibe at all. To me, it’s soft and warm and sensitive and a little woodsy, probably because it’s similar to “russet”.
Sully and [name_u]Rue[/name_u] are both fab. I actually like the simple [name_m]Russ[/name_m] a lot too.
@Harvest-Endellion: I’m glad to see someone else enjoys the name and will use it!
I’ve never actually read [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables so I’ll have to check out the character. Rustle is such a nice word. I’ll be associating the name [name_m]Russell[/name_m] with rustling leaves and autumn now.
Russell [name_m]Whitman[/name_m] is rather fantastic.
@katinka: I only know one British [name_m]Russell[/name_m], a handful of older American men with the name, and one younger fellow who was a classmate of mine. I can see why it would come off as “dated” to some. I’m not bothered either way.
Russ is a fine nickname but I’m not a huge fan. Honestly, it’s any excuse to use [name_u]Sully[/name_u] as a nickname.
I like your suggestions of [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_u]Winter[/name_u], [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_u]Clancy[/name_u], [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], and [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] (!). But, truly, [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_u]Adair[/name_u] is a real winner here. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it!
I love [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m], [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m], [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u]!
I love [name_m]Russell[/name_m]! [name_m]Just[/name_m] a handsome friendly name! [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Russell[/name_m] is actually on my list so I love [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. Honestly all of those middles sound great but if I had to narrow it down I’d say [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_u]Timothy[/name_u].
I thought of [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Whitman[/name_m] because my meandering mind associates leaves of grass and rustling wind with Leaves of Grass and [name_m]Walt[/name_m] [name_m]Whitman[/name_m].
I was contemplating [name_m]Russell[/name_m] for a middle name option. I like [name_m]Tavian[/name_m] [name_m]Russell[/name_m] as a combo. [name_m]Russell[/name_m] is really growing on me!
I thin [name_m]Russell[/name_m] is super charming and warm! And both [name_u]Sully[/name_u] and [name_u]Rue[/name_u] are lovely nicknames (although I also like the more expected [name_m]Russ[/name_m])
I love [name_m]Russell[/name_m], rugged and sweet!
Russell [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Franklin[/name_m], [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_u]Quincy[/name_u], [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] are all fantastic
@Rachelhaydenberk: I think [name_m]Russell[/name_m] makes a great middle name. [name_m]Tavian[/name_m] [name_m]Russell[/name_m] is interesting! I haven’t really seen [name_m]Tavian[/name_m] before but it’s nice.
@UnderTheRainbow: [name_m]Russell[/name_m] is definitely a nice, charming name. Thanks so much!
@Greyblue: Rugged and sweet is a perfect way to describe [name_m]Russell[/name_m]. I love your suggestions of [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Evander[/name_m], [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], and [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_u]Fox[/name_u].
Thanks!
@Millennial_mom: [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] is a great name. I’m a fan of [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] as well actually.
I’m so glad you like my [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_u]Brooks[/name_u] combo.
One of my patients is named [name_m]Russell[/name_m]. He’s a great guy and father and an influential businessman in global bioenergy. He also has red hair! [name_u]Love[/name_u] the descriptions of rugged and sweet.
Russell [name_u]Dean[/name_u]
[name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_u]Dane[/name_u]
[name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
[name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]
[name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_u]Laurence[/name_u]
[name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] (LOVE this one, but I’m from [name_u]Montana[/name_u] so [name_m]Charles[/name_m] M. [name_m]Russell[/name_m] the artist comes to mind)
@drfox: The [name_m]Russell[/name_m] I know who is my age is also a redhead! I have fingers crossed that any child of mine will have red hair. If so, I’d definitely seize that opportunity and go for a name with a related meaning.
I like your suggestions of [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u], [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Harvey[/name_m](!), and [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m].
Thank you!
@kasatka: I’m a bit surprised as well given the wholly positive reactions to it.
I think of [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Wilson[/name_m], but he is my favorite football player, and [name_m]Russell[/name_m] from Up. So between those two I get very warm-hearted vibes. It’s is a nice soft name. It doesn’t fit with my personal style but I would be happy to meet a [name_m]Russell[/name_m] of any age.
