Ryler

I am almost afraid to post this name on here because I’m almost definite that it will be attacked with hatred! lol!

My husband suggested it last night because it combines a few names that we both like. I also like the option of nicknames [name]Ry[/name] and [name]Ryley[/name] (husband loves [name]Ryley[/name] but I fear he’d get teased when he’s older by kid’s saying it’s a girls name).

I googled the name and found a tennis player with the name; and also their was an american senate in the 1800’s named [name]Bradley[/name] Ryler [name]Johnson[/name]. Coincidentally our last name is [name]Johnson[/name].

I’m not terribly fond of made up sounding trendy names, and fear that this is exactly what this is … However I do really like this name!

I really do respect the opinions of people on this site as most of you have great taste and seem to be pretty intelligent, so i’m gonna ask for your honest opinions on this name, even thought i’m scared :expressionless:

I absolutely love the name Ryler. You should definitely go with what you and your husband love, because it is so hard to find a name you both really like. Congratulations and I hope you go with it

I’ll be honest, it does sound made up, like a mish-mash between [name]Tyler[/name] & [name]Ryan[/name]. But it isn’t a bad name, and if you and your husband both love it then I would say go for it. Also most people aren’t as concerned over whether or not a name is made up, just berries :). As long as, 1) it’s easy to pronounce 2) easy to spell and 3) sounds like a name, (which it does) I don’t think most people would mind

If you both love it, you should definitely go for it, it’s cute. But I agree that it does sound a little made up and I fear you might end up feeling like he is part of a trendy family of names ([name]Tyler[/name], [name]Kyler[/name], etc). I prefer [name]Ryder[/name] or [name]Ryland[/name], both of which I think are great.

A kid named Ryler just sounds like he’s destined to be a troublemaker. The trendy made-up factor aside, there is something about this name I can’t stand. I think that you would be much better off with [name]Riley[/name]. While [name]Riley[/name] is ranked higher for girls, [name]Riley[/name] has been bouncing around the boys’ top 100 for a decade now. In the last year [name]Riley[/name] actually went up for boys and down for girls. So I think it’s safe to say this name is firmly unisex and teasing potential is pretty low.

I’m sorry, but I just can’t get past the trendy, made-up vibe that this name gives off. It just looks like a smush of [name]Ryan[/name] and [name]Tyler[/name] to me. If you like [name]Riley[/name] (and I would go with this spelling since using a “y” tends to make names look more feminine, ie, [name]Camryn[/name]) then I would use that. You’d still be able to use the nickname [name]Ry[/name] and I think the majority of people would still consider it to be a boy’s name.

I actually like Ryler. I think it sounds creative without being weird. In the end, you and your husband have to love the name. Best of luck!

The longer I’ve been on here, the less I’m bothered by names that seem maybe made up because I’m constantly coming across names that sound made up but that actually have long histories behind them. That said, Ryler does sound a little trendy to me and also a little feminine. I much prefer [name]Ryder[/name].

But as pp said – in the real world (outside of nameberry), most people will not be concerned with the origin and history of your child’s name – it will just be their name. If you both love it (which is more than I can say for my husband and I on any name), go for it.
