Sage too feminine?

Basically, we’re welcoming a baby boy! [name_f]My[/name_f] wife and I both like [name_u]Sage[/name_u], and since it’s unisex, we plan to pair it with a traditional masculine middle name. To give our child another option if he doesn’t like our first choice. However, recently two of our friends told us [name_u]Sage[/name_u] sounded very feminine to them. What do you think about it? Both of us prefer gentle, non-aggressive boy names, but we would not like to give him a plain “girls’ name” that people usually automatically associate with girls, if that makes sense.

I know sometimes a name is more popular among one gender in one country, but probably the opposite one in another country. So to make it clear, we live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and may move to the US in the future, if it helps. All opinions appreciated.

I don’t think it’s too feminine, especially if it’s paired with a strong masculine name. It gives me really chill, earthy vibes.

I don’t find it feminine either. I think it is a great, handsome name for a boy!

I don’t think it’s too feminine! To me it’s a truly unisex name, and I love the idea of pairing it with a masculine middle name!

To me, [name_u]Sage[/name_u] is unisex

Sage is fully unisex. Personally, I prefer it on boys. We’re short on botanical names for boys!

Thanks, we love earthy nature names too. That’s why we chose it
His middle name will be an honor name from my wife’s family.

I personally think of a girl when I hear the name, but I can totally see it on a boy and especially with a masculine middle name. And, it’s totally unisex.

Sage definitely comes across as totally unisex for me. [name_m]Can[/name_m] definitely suit a boy. [name_u]Saige[/name_u] with the I is more feminine however in my opinion. [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] name!!

I think it is unisex it all just depends on preference. I prefer it as a girls name but that’s just me. I think of the name [name_u]Page[/name_u] for girls and the name [name_m]Gage[/name_m] for boys. I think it is completely down the middle!

Fully agree! There are too many choices for girls when parents want a botanical name, but much less for boys. I personally feel most nature names should be unisex in theory (except for some flower ones).

Saige makes me think of [name_f]Paige[/name_f], so it’s indeed feminine. We will spell it [name_u]Sage[/name_u].

Sage is an amazing unisex name! One of the few names I truly consider unisex.

I really like [name_u]Sage[/name_u] on a boy! [name_m]Even[/name_m] if it’s used slightly more for girls, it doesn’t sound inherently feminine. I think it has a lovely sound - I really love gentle, earthy names.

Hello, congratulations! I live in the UK. I love gender neutral names and traditionally masculine or feminine names being used for the opposite gender. [name_f]My[/name_f] opinion on [name_u]Sage[/name_u] is that it feels soft but not at all “pretty”. I actually like it for a boy but not a girl.

Yes, boys can be soft too! I wish more people could see being soft doesn’t hurt one’s masculinity.

Actually [name_u]Sage[/name_u] had also been in our girl’s list before we knew the gender, but it wasn’t our favorite for a girl.

Sage works perfectly for a boy. I see it as very unisex

I also live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]. I’m a teacher and have yet to meet a little girl [name_u]Sage[/name_u], but have taught two boys named [name_u]Sage[/name_u]. I cringe at people thinking names should be “gendered” ESPECIALLY when it’s “feminine” names being used for boys when a lot of people accept “boy” names on “girls”. So stupid. [name_u]Sage[/name_u] is an amazing name for a boy (or girl).

Sage is definitely more masculine to me. Especially when you consider that ‘Sages’ we’re wise men in history. So before [name_u]Sage[/name_u] jumped on the train of boys to girls it was originally a title given to men. But otherwise it can be seen as unisex if you prefer and I think it would work well in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] or the US. Congrats!

We need more soft boy names! Many people like strong names on girls, but not the other way around. Boys absolutely can be feminine, just like girls can be masculine. It’s their own life. Nothing wrong with that.

Unfortunately we still live in a society filled with gender prejudices, so we have to take what other people (namely his future peers) might think about it into account. We don’t want to make his life hard.
