Sailor

So, someone (alzora I believe, :)) suggested this name on my combo thread and it reminded me how much I love it. It had totally slipped my mind and had been pushed on the back burner because my husband didn’t like it much. BUT, I brought it up to him today and he acted like he never disliked it (men…) and said he would definitely consider it.

For those who don’t know, I’m trying to find a way to subtly honor my father who passed away with the next baby’s name. He loved the water and boats, and there is also a Grateful Dead song called “Lost [name]Sailor[/name]” that always makes me think of him. So, what are your thoughts on the name [name]Sailor[/name]?

I [name]LOVE[/name] it. Personally I think it’s more middle name worthy, but it really is amazing.

I originally didn’t like it, but now I think it would be a super sweet name for a boy because of this blogger I follow (bleu bird blog) who has a handsome and smiley baby boy named [name]Sailor[/name] [name]Rhodes[/name]. I’m not sure I could see it on a girl, but I typically can’t see [name]Rowan[/name] on a girl either, so I suppose it fits with your style well. A lovely, more feminine middle name could balance out the masculinity of [name]Sailor[/name], I suppose!

[name]One[/name] of the characters (? Not sure… he’s dead, but that is not a spoiler, no worries) of my favourite books is called [name]Sailor[/name]. But he was a man. This was my first brush with it as a name, and so I see it as being very masculine.

I wouldn’t have [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Sailor[/name] together. [name]Rowan[/name] on its own is just that- [name]Rowan[/name]. When you put it with [name]Sailor[/name], all I can see/ think/ hear is “rowin’ and sailor”. I think it would work as a middle name, though, as it makes the wordiness a lot less noticeable.

I’m really sorry for your loss.

I think [name]Sailor[/name] is great. For a boy or girl? I think it works for both.

Hehe, my husband does the same! Men…

[name]EDIT[/name]: I looked at your combo thread and see it’s for a girl. I think [name]Christy[/name] Brinkley’s daughter is named [name]Sailor[/name]. I see you’re considering [name]Cordelia[/name] as well, which means “from the sea”, which could be a way of honouring your father, too. There’s a number of names with watery meanings, which you might like.

I love [name]Sailor[/name].

[name]Cordelia[/name] would only be a middle name. It’s one of my husband’s picks and I’m just so-so on it, but I told him we could use it as a middle. I guess [name]Sailor[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] would be too watery? lol

[name]Sailor[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] is a bit watery, but I think that would be more of an issue on NB where people actually know the meaning of [name]Cordelia[/name] In the “real world” her middle name won’t be used frequently, and when it is, the average person won’t immediately connect the watery meanings.

I think [name]Sailor[/name] is beautiful with [name]Rowan[/name] (despite the “rowing sailor” connection) and I love the unique way it honors your dad!

Some more nautical name ideas:
[name]Maris[/name] - sea/rule
[name]Azure[/name] - unisex color name. A gentle lazy ocean comes to mind.
[name]Meredith[/name] - “sea lord”…too long? This one could work for either gender, for a first or middle. [name]Sailor[/name] [name]Meredith[/name] is beautifully unisex.
[name]Zephyr[/name] - west wind. unisex and stunning with [name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Muir[/name]/Muirin - sea/moor
[name]Navy[/name] - nautical color and seafaring name. Would make a stunning middle, although not one I’d pair with [name]Sailor[/name].
[name]Kai[/name] - sea in Hawaiian, forgiveness in Japanese. Usually given to boys. [name]Kairi[/name] is an option if you want the more feminine version
[name]Harbor[/name] - loving the imagery of a safe haven for sailors in a storm. Beautifully unisex, and similar enough to the popular [name]Harper[/name] to make it as a word name.
[name]Windsor[/name] - not oceanic, but has the W sound. “the bend in the river”
[name]Anne[/name] - as a middle name perhaps? [name]Anne[/name] is the patron saint of sailors
[name]Indigo[/name] - deep blue. Not one I’d personally pair with [name]Sailor[/name], but is lovely with [name]Rowan[/name]. It is rising in popularity though.
[name]Merlin[/name] - sea fortress (and of course the utter awesomeness of the Arthurian wizard)
[name]Alwyn[/name] - Welsh reference to the river Alwen. I know you were liking [name]Alys[/name] recently

Good luck! I confess I’m very interested to see what you end up falling for!

Based on the above list, I like the name [name]Merida[/name]! Kind of like [name]Meredith[/name] and may have the same meaning…not sure.

While I really like [name]Sailor[/name], I don’t think it does with [name]Rowan[/name]. As the pp said, I thought of “row and sail” and found it a bit cheesy.

I do like the name [name]Rivers[/name] for a girl which is water related, but not so much an active water name like “row” or “sail” part in the other 2 aforementioned names.

[name]Sailor[/name]'s gorgeous! I’d love to meet a little [name]Sailor[/name] girl. I always hear [name]Fiona[/name] [name]Apple[/name]‘s O’[name]Sailor[/name] song when I see the name (the video’s got some pretty spectacular “sailor” girls in it!). I think [name]Sailor[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] would be super cute!

I really, really like it! However, it might be better as a middle name…

Generally I’m not a fan of unisex/boys names on girls (I wouldn’t use one on my daughter), however, I know a little girl whose name is [name]Sawyer[/name], and I can see the appeal.

[name]Sailor[/name] and [name]Sawyer[/name] have a spunky and cute quality to them that is nice.

I think [name]Sailor[/name] goes nicely with [name]Rowan[/name] as well

I’m another one who just hears rowin sailor as a sibset. I don’t think sailor ages nearly as well as [name]Rowan[/name] either, but find it fine for a middle name.

I don’t really like it. It sounds like a really cute pet’s name to me. Sorry!

I love your daughter’s name though, [name]Rowan[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. [name]Sailor[/name] just isn’t as substantial to me as [name]Rowan[/name].

I think [name]Sailor[/name] would work better as a quirky mn to honour your father. I just can’t get past the teasing potential for either gender. I can hear people saying …“well, hello sailor” in a suggestive voice and it turns me off.

I don’t love the name [name]Sailor[/name] for a girl or a boy. [name]Don[/name]'t think it fits with [name]Rowan[/name], either. There are many, many more subtle, creative ways of honoring someone who loves the sea, boating, etc. [name]Cordelia[/name] is one. [name]Marin[/name], [name]Maris[/name], [name]Meryl[/name] ([name]Merrill[/name]), and [name]Morgan[/name] are others, but there are so many more if you search for meanings such as sea, water, sail, etc. Locations or boat names special to your father might be another.
