Salome

I’m having a huge crush on the name [name_f]Salome[/name_f] but the name is very unfamiliar to me. All I know is what is said on this site.

[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce it? Is it too Biblical, is it usable? What are your overall feelings about [name_f]Salome[/name_f]? What names would you pair it with?

Sorry for attacking with all these questions

Thanks all!

I was almost named [name_f]Salome[/name_f]! Though my parents changed their mind and went with [name_f]Celia[/name_f] instead.
My favorite pronunciation of it is sa-LO-may, because I love the possibility of [name_f]Mae[/name_f] as a nickname, in case [name_u]Sal[/name_u]/[name_f]Sally[/name_f] isn’t quite her style. I’ve also heard it as sa-LO-mee. I find it usable. Yeah, the biblical association does come to mind since it’s a pretty out there name, but once you meet a person you start associating the name with them. Though I personally wouldn’t use it if I didn’t want people to assume my kid’s parents were religious.

I would pronounce it like [name_u]Shalom[/name_u]…not sure if that’s correct. Overall, it’s not my personal style, but it’s a pretty name!

To me, [name_f]Salome[/name_f] is a Biblical name that, for some reason, is rarely used outside of the Bible. At least in English-speaking countries.

I checked the NB database page for it, and [name_f]Salome[/name_f] [name_f]Violetta[/name_f] is a very pretty combination.

I’ve heard it pronounced [name_u]SAL[/name_u]-o-may and also sa-LOH-mee.

Thanks! Where I’m from it’s pronounced [name_u]SAL[/name_u]-ome, and as we’re not overly religious in my country I don’t think [name_f]Salome[/name_f] would stick out as an “in your face” Biblical name (but who knows).

It just looks so pleasing to me

I like the sounds of [name_f]Salome[/name_f] and I like the look and feel too. The biblical story is a dark one but to be honest, so is the story of [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] and that has gained popularity so I think [name_f]Salome[/name_f] could work

As someone who was not raised learning the Bible, I did not know [name_f]Salome[/name_f] was from the Bible and thus don’t find it overly religious. All the above pronunciations are beautiful, but the spelling just makes me thing of salami, slalom, and [name_u]Salem[/name_u].

My first association with the name is the book In the Name of [name_f]Salome[/name_f] by [name_f]Julia[/name_f] Alvarez.

I adore [name_f]Salome[/name_f] (I pronounce it sah-LO-may)! It’s been on my guilty pleasures list for quite some time, as I was brought up religiously and so can’t quite shake the connection, but it is a lovely name!
