Sam or Simon?

We like names that are simple and well-known, yet not used very commonly right now.

We’re thinking of [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] ([name_u]Sam[/name_u]) or [name_m]Simon[/name_m]. I know [name_u]Sam[/name_u] is way more popular than [name_m]Simon[/name_m], but it isn’t very high on the list of popular names and has been holding steady in the 20’s for the past 20+ years. Middle name will probably be [name_u]James[/name_u] or [name_m]Robert[/name_m]. His sister is [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Lillian[/name_f].

Opinions welcome. Thank you!

Welcome to Nameberry!

Simon James and Mary Lillian would be a perfect sibset!

Simon and Mary fit slightly better stylistically in my opinion, but it’s such a marginal difference that honestly either Samuel or Simon would work beautifully with Mary.

I love your daughter’s name! Both [name_u]Sam[/name_u] and [name_m]Simon[/name_m] work, but I prefer [name_m]Simon[/name_m]. I think it makes [name_f]Mary[/name_f] feel cool and fresh, whereas [name_u]Sam[/name_u] dates it a bit. However, both are good options!

Yeah, I agree. [name_u]Sam[/name_u] is a lot more popular than [name_m]Simon[/name_m], and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] isn’t super popular. I think [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] would be very nice.

I love [name_m]Simon[/name_m] with [name_f]Mary[/name_f]!

I prefer sweet [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]

Both names fit your criteria well and are really nice and friendly sounding too. I think I prefer [name_u]Sam[/name_u], it sounds a bit more athletic to me compared with [name_m]Simon[/name_m] feeling a bit more bookish. The [name_m]Simon[/name_m] says connection would be fun for a kiddo though! Maybe you might also like…

I much prefer [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] nn [name_u]Sam[/name_u]

Hi there.

I like [name_m]Simon[/name_m], but I love [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]. It’s so gentle yet manly & handsome. And has such great old fashioned charm. And then there’s the sporty, friendly lovable [name_u]Sam[/name_u]. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] & [name_u]Sam[/name_u] would be really cute for siblings. [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] probably flows better, but [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] isn’t bad.

Hope this helps.

I prefer [name_m]Simon[/name_m] ([name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] si dashing!)

Sam is handsome and familiar, and at the same time soft but manly. I think it would be also a good choice.

But [name_m]Simon[/name_m] has a really nice quirky, a bit nerdy vibe. I also think [name_m]Simon[/name_m] has the same feeling as [name_f]Mary[/name_f].

They’re both very well suited. I probably prefer [name_m]Simon[/name_m] a little more with [name_f]Mary[/name_f].
[name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]

I prefer [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]

I really like [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] a lot more than [name_m]Simon[/name_m].

Samuel has a historic, generous feel whereas I associate [name_m]Simon[/name_m] with miserliness and cruelty. Not that [name_m]Simon[/name_m] is a bad name, but I must have bad associations with it that I’ve forgotten.

I like [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] in sound though I like the name [name_m]Robert[/name_m] more.

I really love both [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] and [name_m]Simon[/name_m], and I like how they work with [name_f]Mary[/name_f] !

I think I slightly prefer [name_m]Simon[/name_m] for 2 reasons
1.) I know less of them … I am crazy when it comes to popularity
2.) my favourite movie growing up was [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_u]Birch[/name_u] (the book the movie was adapted from was A prayer for [name_u]Owen[/name_u] Meany)

I like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] paired with [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] slightly more though. No wrong answer here

Exactly this! [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] and [name_m]Simon[/name_m] are so handsome (and I love [name_f]Mary[/name_f]), but [name_m]Simon[/name_m] is my favorite boy’s name. I also think [name_m]Simon[/name_m] is perfect with [name_f]Mary[/name_f].

Ahh, finally someone who isn’t obsessed with nickname names! I like [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] “[name_u]Sam[/name_u]” [name_m]Robert[/name_m] & [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u], with those middle names. [name_f]My[/name_f] personal preference is [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], but both are fine.

Both are lovely, but I think [name_m]Simon[/name_m] works better with [name_f]Mary[/name_f]

Simon hands down.

I don’t think one is better than the other - both excellent, as is [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. I like [name_u]James[/name_u] better for the middle.

I love your daughter’s name! Personally I think [name_m]Simon[/name_m] works better with [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and either [name_u]James[/name_u] or [name_m]Robert[/name_m] would work as a middle for [name_m]Simon[/name_m].
