Tonight, while having supper with my parents and younger siblings, our table conversation somehow turned to baby names. I’m the only one in the family right now who could have a child (all three of my siblings are under 18 and my stepmom isn’t able to have kids anymore), so my sister asked me what I would name another little girl if I had one. I said that I thought [name]Samara[/name] was pretty and all I got was “That creepy chick from the [name]Ring[/name]?!”
If I did have a child and named her [name]Samara[/name], would that be everyone’s response to the name? I think its beautiful name, much prettier than [name]Samantha[/name]. Am I the only person who thinks this?
I just saw the name for the first time today in another post and I love it! It is definitely prettier than [name]Samantha[/name] (btw, is it pronounced with the same rhythm? Sa-[name]MAR[/name]-ah?). I’m not familiar with the [name]Ring[/name] though, so perhaps I’m not a good one to ask…
I do think though that in general, unless a name has a strong bad association (i.e. [name]Jezebel[/name]), people will quickly get over their initial impression of a name and start to view the name as who your child is. So even if people did think of a character from the [name]Ring[/name] at first, I think they could easily adjust to associating the name with your lovely daughter instead.
[name]Hope[/name] that helps!
I never saw the ring, so I wouldn’t know that reference. I like [name]Samara[/name], I think of deserts/mountains because of it’s resemblance to [name]Sahara[/name], and [name]Sierra[/name].
[name]Samara[/name] would fit in lovely with [name]Rebecca[/name] and [name]Elijah[/name].
@sunshine 10: yes, you got the pronunciation right! And The [name]Ring[/name] is a horror movie about a little girl ,named [name]Samara[/name], who was murdered by her psychotic mother and who’s ghost kills people. But the name [name]Samara[/name] is actually from the Bible, I think, so it goes back a lot further than a horror flick!
There are a lot of people who have not seen the [name]Ring[/name] and would not make the connection. I think it is a pretty name and has a little spin off [name]Samantha[/name].
It would be mine… I always think of The [name]Ring[/name] with that name. The girl is the scariest thing ever! Still creeps me out. But it’s probably still usable!
It’s 100% “that creepy chick from The [name]Ring[/name]” to me as well, I’m afraid. It’s a shame, because it is very pretty and I get the appeal of its sound, but if I met a little [name]Samara[/name] I would definitely be thinking of the girl from The [name]Ring[/name] at first.
I grew up with a [name]Samara[/name] so even though I associate it with the [name]Ring[/name] I have first hand heard this name get complimented all the time. It was also the name of a tv character on Pretty [name]Little[/name] Liars recently.
There are multiple pronunciations though. My friend was Suh-marr-uh the tv character was Suh-mair-uh. My name is [name]Tara[/name] so pretty much all of my names pronunciations could be the second part.
Its on my list. It was very nearly [name]Eliana[/name]'s name when picking. I saw the [name]Ring[/name] and hate that this is the association. However I think it is still useable because when she’s older she and her peers will have no idea what the ring was. I will probably pass because my son is a [name]Noah[/name] and thats another name from the ring. I think is a beautiful name. Much better than [name]Samantha[/name] but I dislike [name]Sam[/name] as a nn another drawback for me
I just keep going back to other “creepy” little kids names: [name]Reagan[/name], [name]Damien[/name]. People still use those without too much of a hitch. I like the name, so if I did ever have another child, it would be on my list!
I don’t think [name]Samara[/name] should be thrown out just because of the ring. In fact, my Fiance didn’t even remember the name of the little girl. I asked him what his first thoughts of [name]Samara[/name] was and he said Somalia. It’s a beautiful updated version of [name]Samantha[/name] [name]IMO[/name].
I like it, and I did see the ring. Creepy movie, but my first thought is the seeds from maple trees. In fact, I think that is why they used the red maple tree so much in the movie. That reference won’t stay around for long, and none of your daughter’s peers will know about it. It’s a pretty name.
I’ve seen the [name]Ring[/name] but I still don’t think of the little girl. I like both pronunciations, suh-mair-uh and suh-mar-uh
I don’t think [name]Samara[/name] is in the Bible. [name]Samarra[/name] is in ancient city in present-day Iraq but I don’t recall it being mentioned. People often mistake [name]Samaria[/name], which is biblical, with [name]Samara[/name]
